news Solar Eclipse Over The U.S. Occurring This Monday.

For those not in the know, the U.S. will be experiencing  total solar eclipse (dammit Luna, you had one job :orly:). This doesn't mean the sun will be blocked out like in the movies, but the sky will be noticeably dimmer in some parts of the country, namely along the path of totality. But if you have the proper filter to look through, say the type of glass used in welding masks pr specialized glasses, then looking at the sun through it will reveal the eclipse in detail.

A very rare event and by my last check, the first in a quarter century. So will you go out and check out Luna trying to enshroud the world in eternal night the solar eclipse?

I happen to be right in the path of this and we are all really excited to see it. In fact they bought us some special glasses for it and everything. Hopefully it won't be cloudy. I will be sure to post pictures of possible.

I can't wait! I promised a friend I would get a picture, and I will be getting that picture.

I know I'll need very strong eye protection, but I'll wear three pairs of sunglasses.

Best way to get a picture is to use the "pinhole" method.

literally just need two large pieces of card; pop a small hole in one, hold it above the other and there will be an image formed of the sun on the card in shadow; that's safe to photograph without burning out your camera or your eyes.

That's a cool idea, but how about solutions for ponies that don't carry an entire home depot in their backpack

I'm just kidding. That actually is a good idea. However, I don't have that, so I just plan on looking at the eclipse through my tablet.

Really I don't think this is enough. Have to get those special glasses that block out 99.99% of light or whatever it was Vsauce said.

Except like I said, I'm flat out broke.

Hate to say it but you're going to destroy your eyes if you don't use proper protection. Which is worth more, special protection or your eyes?

There's a list of reputable vendors here but I'm not sure if you can get any of these by tomorrow.

Meme. I'm near sighted in one eye and far sighted in another. My vision is already jacked up enough as it is, I'm pretty sure the eclipse can't make it any worse.

Might be worth just looking around the house - the card from food packaging, say a cereal box, opened out flat, should be more than good enough, and is effectively free. Much better than risking your eyesight permanently rather than look.

I'll certainly give it a try.

I-25 near my city has been backed up nearly all day every day for the last several days as people from Colorado and surrounding southern areas head to Wyoming. I'm not going to bother getting involved with that zoo of traffic and where I'm at I'm still in the 95% zone. Won't see totality but it'll still be pretty darn close. Though it's kinda hilarious to think that the state of Wyoming will probably double or triple in population for this event.

Except it can. The eclipse can make it a lot worse. You're staring at the sun.

Here's a list with stores you may still find them in.

Please do. you will want to practice a little too - you need to get the focus distance of the pinhole from the target right; the larger the hole, the brighter the image, but the fuzzier it can get.  basically the principle behind the earliest cameras.

Sorta cool to do just because you can, too - making your own pinhole camera is awesome. Also, if you make the target sheet of fairly thin paper, you can see the image from the other side - making it easier to photograph.

That's cool, but there is no stare that I know of that is willing to accept barns and noble gift cards as payment.

I'm kinda screwed here.

I can't exactly go out and get those, I don't have any ways of paying for it.

Seriously, it's packaging cardboard and maybe a sheet of normal writing paper if you want to go down that route. just use what you have from the kitchen.

Yeah, unfortunately you are. But you really shouldn't risk permanent damage to your eyes for an eclipse. I'm not going to be able to see it either, except maybe on TV.

You know at least around here all the library's and parks are giving out free glasses. It is worth looking to see if your city offers something similar.

Fair enough, I'll just watch the NASA live stream.

I haven't really experienced many eclipses where I'm from, seeing how we never get full eclipses, however seeing how it's going to about 90 percent full in my area, if I can get those special glasses, I might be able to see one for the first time.

Sigh, I live in Southern California, so I don't think I'll be seeing any differences. :(

What do you guys think of my situation?

You'll get a partial eclipse there. The moon will cover about 60% of the sun. Be sure to wear eclipse glasses or use the pinhole method (as explained by Cypherhoof).
