Spoiler

Name: Akane

Spoiler

d9e149b0ac0a3810864145e49b9388bf.jpg

Personality: Smug, confident, witty, sarcastic and laid back. Akane is the type of girl who won't take a situation or anything in it with the seriousness or respect it deserves unless it intrigues or challenges her. Things like rules, social conventions and even laws are things she abides by to placate others before she finds away around them. Akane really just doesn't give a damn until it either interests her or inconveniences her. All she wants to do is get the mundane out of the way so that she could go back to entertaining herself, usually through anything involving gaming, or her enjoyment of martial arts and extreme sports. Everything else is just so boring to her, and she hates it when people tell her what is important in life or what to do. She lives life by her own rules. And the combination of her intellect, and her newfound magic, who's to stop her?

Age:17

Backstory: Growing up between Japan and America, lots of things were to be expected from Akane. Do well in school. Find a respectable, high paying job. Marry a wealthy man. Be a model of eastern femininity. But Akane wasn't intimidated. Confidence was something she was seemingly born with in spades. Everything seem to come easy to her, and she was aware of that. All the kids her age seemed to crack under the pressure, or eek out succsess through sheer grit. But Akane got through school with the greatest ease. Enough ease to tip off her teachers that she should be bumped up a grade.

But she could've gone father had she wanted. Akane was more than smart enough to graduate not just graduate elementary school, but graduate high school. But she didn't put forth that effort, for she saw the consequences in her own siblings. One inkling of intellect and they were put through the ringer, sent to summer and cram schools to be made into geniuses, studying from sun up to sun down. But Akane had no interest in being a scholar.  She pursued her sisters passion for sports and martial arts, and her brothers love of gaming. And to make time for that, she purposely held herself back. Life as a secretary, or stuck in a cubicle, or getting a degree, whatever society deemed prestigious, sounded miserable. She would not be a tool or a prize to be held by society. Her prosperity as an individual mattered.

Prestige, glamour, respect, was not in Akane's sights. Getting the means to keep society off her back, to make a fortune, break herself free from rules and regulations, to get out of that debt to society, was all that mattered. Find the easiest way to accomplish that, and she'd be free to do her favorite activities.

Like high stakes gambling, prize fighting, e-sports, extreme sports and playing the stock market like it were a pachinko machine. A teenager shouldn't be able to do all this.

But one secretly operating with magical powers could.

Also I'd be interested in running a teacher, but I'd like to know what positions are open first.

okay, @Duality I guess I'll try to add Sorxir into the mix

1st year student

pelajae

Special (Light/Dark), but she prefers light

Is there any chance she could be reduced to a light mage?

People having a special and a teacher at the same time is something we're trying to avoid.

Akane looks great. Just need the name and/or description of her element and the year you envisage her being.

As for teachers, any type is welcome - elemental teachers especially. Your teacher can teach non-magical subjects as well as mage-specific ones; the University tries to expand its students' minds beyond just their own abilities.

Well first year, since she's just been discovered and literally dragged to the institution.

My idea was that her element is that of human biology. She can use and manipulate her own body in various ways, giving her abilities like:

  • Elasticity
  • change her body to as hard as bone or as soft as cartilage
  • Shape shifting (only into other humanoids or basic shapes)
  • Accelerated healing
  • Growing twice as tall or shrinking half her size.
  • Olympic levels of speed, strength and stamina
  • Minor abilities like moving her internal organs, slowing or speeding her metabolism, or resisting pain.

As for teachers, I'd like to have Angel apply for earth and metal magic, as well as teach health and first aid.

Biomancer? Unconventional but very nifty.

However, I think she might need to be nerfed slightly so as to not fall into the 'Special' category of magic (and thus disqualify you from playing a teacher in addition to her). Even just the speed, strength, stamina, healing, and miscellaneous 'minor' abilities (as well as possibly very power-draining and small-scale bodymorphing, such as adjusting her facial features for disguise) would be a full non-Special magical portfolio, and, at any rate, would be the only abilities she'd be able to use in prize-fighting arenas etc. without revealing that she was using magic.

And, also, if I may ask, how does the stock-market manipulation and high-stakes gambling wins work if all she can control is her own body?

Earth elemental specialising in metal. The faculty expands by yet another member, providing you're okay with Akane not being a Special. :proud:

Well she would use her shapeshifting as a disguise to repeatedly win over and over again at various casinos without suspicion, same with her faking various identities to both invest and profit from mulitple accounts.

Also, exactly what powers need to be nerfed? Keep in mind that she'll have a range and AOE disadvantage against anyone she duels.

Oh, okay, it sounded like she was using her powers to cheat the odds of winning somehow.

Accelerated healing, Olympic-level speed, strength, and stamina, pain resistance, at-will metabolism speed altering, and ability to adjust the positions of her own internal organs would give her the ability to dodge most targeted range attacks, resist most AoE attacks, have a perpetual advantage in any form of melee combat, and rebound relatively rapidly from almost anything anyone could throw at her, up to and including impalement. Anything on top of that would count as Special, IMO.

So really, all she would have is flexibility and shape shifting?

Just pointing out why she'd be able to match conventional mages even without half of the original power portfolio.

As for the soft-hard thing, it's okay as long as it's not gelatinous-goop soft and no-sell-bullets hard, and preferably not the whole body at the same time (e.g., just the torso to block a stab attack or just an arm to block a sweeping blow).

As long as you're fine with that, she's approved. :proud:

Sure thing.

So for subjects, I'm thinking:

  • Magic in history- How various myths, legends and events throughout history were directly influenced by magic, and how historical, mythical and even religious figures were all magic users, from Moses being a hydromancer, to Merlin having been a team of magic users, to how a mezzomancer summoned a storm upon British forces in 1812.
  • Proto-thaumaturgy- The study of the old ways magic was channeled, though incantation, written glyphs and even use of physical proponents. Basically how and why early magic users needed books, scrolls, talismans, hand signs, verbal commands and spell ingredients.
  • Enchantment and animism- How physical items and places can be imbued with magic, and how such magic can develop sentience. Ties into the explanation the spirituality of animal, nature and ancestor worship in many cultures being related to magic artifacts and places.

Hello @Duality

I'm not here in an official capacity, but my friend @Denim&Venom has coaxed me into being interested in this here RP. I do have a question as I'm still thinking of who I'd like to use.

Light magic? Is this the power of the heavens sort of magic? Like very anti evil and undead sort of thing.

Or is it healing magic, like priests and clerics sort of thing?

Ahem I'll take that Duality. Ok Light magic @Mentis Soliloquy

It is a Magic in which the caster is able to manipulate and utilize light in various ways. Occasionally, a certain technique, usually involving the hands, is used to cast a Light spell.[5] When used for offense, the Magic can take the form of a sphere-like object that can be ejected at the opponent or as a beam that can be blasted.[1][6][7] Light can also be emitted from the caster's body; depending on the brightness or heat that the light emits, it can be capable enough to blind an enemy[3] or cause the surroundings to explode.[8] Light Magic can also be manifested for multiple usage in defense

if it were to be like holy heavenly magic that would be called Angelic Magic, being able to cast magic that angels can or smite evil kinda thing. But the way that would be would be way nerfed compared to what a real angel could do. Make sense?

Sounds spiffy! Are you thinking of one teacher teaching all of these or one character for each?

Although, I should add, glyphs (and, to a lesser extent, incantations) are still in use at the time of the RP, due to their usefulness in the area of formulaic 'preprogrammed' magic. They have, for the most part, however, been unified into a single standardised convention-based system of runic relationships, called the Precept Codex, by Gabriel Lazel himself and a team of researchers (in the spirit of mathematical formalism that proved so successful bringing about the discovery of many groundbreaking theorems in the '60s). My teacher covers a lot of this in her classes side-by-side with relevant aspects of physics, since they're quite similar in form and general applicability.

And Moses was involved with plenty more supernatural events than just parting the Red Sea and turning the Nile into blood. :P

It was gonna be between two teachers. Though I do have ideas for a third. Plus Angel, that'd make 4 teachers.

So, magical equivalent to physics. Perhaps the class can be split? Magic pre-precept codex, followed by an intro to precept codex.

That's a lotta teachers to handle, especially with a student in addition. Can you roleplay that many people simultaneously? :o

And the classes would probably be split practical-theory, since my teacher would likely only teach the theoretical side of it, not being specialised in glyphs. The Precept Codex is pure theory, which would leave the practical glyph-mage teacher free simply to show the students how to actually use their magic.

Alright here we go...! (In the name of The Joker)

I'd like to apply with Katarina or just Kat

https://toyhou.se/1049774.-katarina-aghaveagh

I'd like to apply her as a second year Earth Mage, I even have an Image for it.

And she is a Pelajae.

(I've a lot of art of her so I'll probably post some from time to time, if I want to show what she's wearing or something)
