Congratulations on coining a term. You should write some fanfics and draw some fan art about them to promote the name. It might have already been done though. Never misunderestimate this fandom's ability an analyze every inch of this show and then make it their own.

I keep wondering what's with the tuft of hair on their ears? That ain't normal for any horse breed.

Well, since they have been on the moon (it's dark there at night) maybe they were pegasi that began to evolve to be more like bats in the moon environment. If they had to mine a lot, maybe their ears are better and they can do echo location in the moon mines.

What if they were also banished ponies who created their own society and community, and adapted to their new environment. After all, 1000 years is long. But that kind of evolution is still quick, but a drastic change like the bleeding MOON would make me adapt as well. I suppose there are other Malumai as well, and these are like Celestia's Royal Guards, but are for Luna?

 

Moon mines. Mewn minez. Something seems so very off about those two words...

I would add the bat wings, webbed tails, cat's eyes and spiky-webbed manes to that list.

 

Oh yes, and the fact that they are flying, wearing plate armor and pulling a chariot that looks like something straight out of The Munsters, and which carries a night princess wearing a cloak made of bats.

 

But other than that, they seem pretty normal to me. ^_^

This doesn't really have to do with those bat ponies, but I think the Changelings should have a more "real" name. I think that's more their dubbed name. They are changelings, but I don't think that's their species name.

That also sounds good, but too bad that it was a word literally coined from the Harry Potter series, and there is no indication from my Internet search that the word "thestral" ever meant anything in English before then, certainly not about creature folklore.

 

They are not really creepy or lanky enough to be Jersey Devils.

 

And the word "malumai" translates to "party" in Hawaiian. It is a type of tiki torch.

Really, that intersting. I made it up. Comes from the Word "malum" which means evil in latin

I'm not sure if the name "maluma" is fair to them. I mean, really, we know next to nothing about them, so it seems presumptuous to call them evil. Especially since they serve Princess Luna, who, granted, as Night Mare Moon was evil, but now is not. I mean, it's your name, do what you want. I'm just saying.

 

If you agree, and might be looking for a different name, might I suggest "Pteron?" "Pteron" is Greek for "wing." It's also part of the name for the bat order (Chiroptera.) The root ptera/pteron is also included in the species names of many bats, particularly those of different kinds of fruit bats. Not saying, necessarily, that you should change the name, but if you'd sought to, may be worth considering?

 

I'd also like to point out that Maluma contains the word "uma," which is Japanese for "horse," which, in my book, is pretty cool.
