Isn't friendship supposed to be magic?

I mean, that's t th e title of the series, but we've mostly ever seen the gals (and guys) just stick to their inner circle of friends. When was the last time Twilight hung out with Mooondancer? Spike with Thorax? Spike with any other Mane 6 that wasn't Twilight and  Rarity?  Fluttershy and Treehugger? Trixie and Maud? Trixie and Thorax? Dicsord and Thorax? Trixie and Discord? Any one of Starlight's "save Equestria buddies" with Sunburst? Spike and Little Strongheart? Cranky and Steven Magnet?

There are loads of friendship pair-offs that we still haven't gotten in an episode, yet  we just get repeat friend-pairs, like Trixie and Starlight, or Spike, Discord, and Big Mac. How do you guys feel about all the friendships that have yet to be returned to and fleshed out?

it's natural to have some friends closer than others, and not all friendships make for more than one good episodes so maybe they're friends behind the cameras(Gilda-dash e.g. was a great episode, but now that griffins kinda calmed down i don't think we'll get much fun out of another one).i'd love to see a pinkie-discord episode though or one that focuses on silver spoon-diamond tiara friendship, now that she's reformed, and of course i'd love to see Tempest Shadow(fizzlepop berrytwist?) interact with her old friends who abandoned her

The first thought I thinked of was accepting the state, where we have closer friends (showed in the episodes) and further friends (not showed in the episode). It's absolutely the same analogy in the real life. You had known lots of people, but you meet some people more often than others.

I think it would be pretty unrealistic to show them being basically devoting huge amounts of time to all friendships. I think its pretty natural to form a some sort of circle of 'close friends' and speand your time with them. I think the show is focused on Twilight and her close circle of friends also known as mane 6 and how it was formed and functions etc.

so even if they dont show those other friendships on screen i dont think they are non existent  some of them may even be part of some other group that we are unaware of

'Magic' is the reason they were able to become friends with so many in the first place. Who could've ever imagined them becoming friends with Starlight and Thorax from the start? Heck, at the start of the show, Twilight could have never imagined herself becoming friends with the rest of the main cast. ^_^ It only has to do with the cast of the show being so large that they don't get to show how well every friendship of theirs has been maintained.

Usually I'd try to guess what the technical reason for this is, but honestly I don't think it's that strange. Of all my friends, I tend to spend by far the most time with a small handful, and I think that's pretty normal. I'd rather see friendships between the main characters reinforced than relationships outside of it; I mean, the show has such a loose grasp on Rarity and Rainbow Dash's friendship that there was just an entire episode about it. Gimme more of that first.

I think it's fine, if their characters/friendships are out of the focus of the show, there needs to be a good reason to have them back in the spotlight, not just because "oh, it has been too long since X and Y had interaction".

There's always the possibility to show that the connection remains without having an interaction on-screen.

I've wanted Coloratura back since season 6, but a nod like Rarity's in 'Rock Solid Friendship' is good enough to show us that a connection is there still.

I do feel Coloratura has been slighted - ok, so a celeb voice actor is going to cost more than the regular cast, but we get Discord regularly enough, and she *was* snubbed in favour of the better known Sia for the movie...

Satirizing the meaning is they can let other ponies but are incapable for the dint to themselves.

Let's not entangle ourselves into a knot of plausible worldly reasons. They can do whatever they want with character pairings, right? Right. So why do we need over a hundred episodes to get one proper Celestia & Twilight episode?

P.S: Twilight & Sunburst episode. Do it and behold 360fx360f.png.de60515aaba5d42ea6bd4dfd0bbc5a98.png

Some friendships are closer than others and it's these that the show staff want to focus on because they involve the principal cast of characters. This is also another example of what can happen when you have too many characters. It's nearly impossible to give so much development to a large assortment within the time constraints that the show is given so some things sadly are cast aside. We should though be grateful for what we get in this regard even if it is the same friendships portrayed consistently.

I think it's realistic. You're just not gonna be talking about friendship all the time... even in MLP. They literally have a school teaching people how to be nice to each other. The main cast barely have the time to hang out with each other lately... you think they have time for everyone else?

If they barely have time for everyone else, they wouldn't have students in the first place.

That's part of the reason why they don't have much time. I don't understand what point you were trying to make here.

Fine, how about this? Working at the School of Friendship doesn't seem to be effecting their social life.

Ah, i see. I disagree. I believe that it was stated in episode 13 of this season that they don't really have the chance to hang out much anymore and Twilight literally has to plan for them all to hang out.

I do feel disappointed about the lack of Fluttershy and Pinkie together, but hey, Season 9 still gives them one more chance. In fact, it could be their biggest season for both of them! That would certainly make an example of magical friendship!

Quality over quantity.

Also, some on-screen friendships just have more chemistry than others. Technically speaking, a show gets super convoluted and messy if it follows too many character relationships or arcs *side-eyes at RWBY*

I mean, lots of people have friends on places like Facebook and other social media, but how many do you actually hang out with on a regular basis? I feel like it's the same way with the gang: you can have a lot of friends, but you're really only going to be super close with a few.
