Spike helped Rarity mine in S01:E19, but she only gave him one jewel in return for all his hard work. Element of Generosity?

Just finished A Dog and Pony Show and suddenly realized this. Not very generous considering Rarity is the element of Generosity, eh? One measly gem even though Spike did 90% of the work?

I'd like to think that in Spike's mind, getting to help Rarity with something and being in her general vicinity is reward enough. The gem he got from her in the end would be an extra bonus for his assistance.

Well, 1. Spike can't get too greedy (Secret Of My Excess anyone?) and 2. She needs the rest for her designs

That's season 2 episode 10 so she has no prior knowledge that he can grow due to greed.

Doing something nice for someone shouldn't be done with the expectation of what you can get in return; he has a thing for Rarity and wanted to help her out on top of the promise that she would let him have one after they were done, so the expectation was already there for it to be a single gem, in my opinion.

Actually, the fact that those gems are meant for dresses makes this even worse because now he's just providing nearly free labor in gathering materials that will be used to make her business more profitable. Rarity has found a loop hole in child labor laws in that they don't apply if the child is of a different species. Way to go!

Yeah, to be honest, in the first few seasons I thought it was strange that she was the Element of Generosity, since there were like two moments in the entire first season when she actually showed generosity (the premiere and Suited For Success). Most of the time she was rather vain or just plain selfish (Intro to Over A Barrel, Sisterhooves Social), so she wasn't exactly my favorite character. I don't expect anyone to showcase their element 24/7, but I felt they should at least show it as a prominent part of their character.

At the same time, you have to keep in mind that those were the first few seasons, when she was much less developed. I think as soon as Season 4 rolled around, she became more likeable, and her generosity showed more and more, even in more subtle ways (making the dresses for Sweetie Belle's play, and even supporting Spike when he participated in the Gauntlet of Fire).

I can tell someone's been watching Cinemare Sins. :mlp_toldya:

Heh yeeee.... I was about to say that. I like that series too.

I can get two conclusions from this statement.

1. She definitely followed the principle of economy

"Maximum profit, low cost"

Well done Rarity! :darling:

2. The power of love of course. If you fall in love with a girl, you will definitely gonna help her out every time she needs your help. Same goes with spike. ^_^

Yes, it is generous (Generous, even). Rarity could get Spike to dig up gems from here to eternity without ever giving him a single one in exchange, and she clearly knows it. Instead, she promised she'd give him some to snack on, once they had enough for Sapphire Shores' outfits, and when they had enough, she cheerfully fulfilled her end of the bargain, even giving him one far larger/finer than most of the collection. I fail to see how this diminishes Rarity as the Element of Generosity.

Isn't being able to be a helper of her as an admirer a big thing? One particular gem may seem not so much, but it's just a little bonus compared to "feeling reward".

One “measly” gem? You do underestimate the flexibility of the terms of Generosity, Darling!

If I DO recall, that was the giant, heart shaped gem that snapped him out of being Spikezilla later on. Symbology aside, that may well be both unique & pricey a gem... going to the boy that treats it like rock candy.

 But I may misremember.

That point aside, you forget that Rarity isn’t just a business mare... she is also an Artist! Have we not seen her blow up at her little sister for using one variety of gems? Have we not seen her talk of inspiration in minor things, wishing she had kept her sketchbook? She doesn’t cut her gems. Rarely, if ever. Half her humor is wholesale attaching blocks of rocks garishly to her adorned accoutrements. Rarity sees value in everything. Each & every rock & dirt clod dug up is a shining symbol of her time with Spike.

Who she holds no attraction to, since she knows he only had fleeting puppy love.

...Hrnng! ... oh... my~ Think I just talked myself into falling in love with Rarity!~*

Edit: It’s why she comes across a bit snotty, snooty & snobbish. When everything has value... you become a critical drama queen. Trust me, Honeychild, I know!

Beatings & Salivations Everybeing!   Creativity is something blatantly important to me as is no doubt evidenced by the 28 OCs I have posted here of the some forty plus I have, they're linked altogether at the bottom of my About Me page in my Profile & I would deeply cherish anything you wish to say about them! Among which of those I am proudest most of is my Draconequusona, His/My Ask Thread  and my Hydra, Gallimaufry or "Mauf" and their own Ask Thread!  Either way, sufficed to say, I am quite confident I have more OCs than you! Crazier to! Do You have a tatzelpony?! No, I rather think you don't! Hew-Hew-hew!

Well at least Rarity gave Spike something for his hard work a besides Rarity needed those gems for her dresses if she gave all her gems to Spike she wouldn't have enough for her clothes at the boutique also Spike loves Rarity he would do anything for her even if it meant getting nothing in return

She needed gems to make dresses for Sapphire, so she must have thought that she should save as much as she could, hence she gave Spike only one gem.

I guess you understood element of generousity as element of "give away everything you got" that's all.
