movies/tv Disney Management: Marvel vs. Star Wars

Recommended Posts

It's being said that the MCU is doing for audiences of today what Star Wars did for movie goers of the late 70s to the 90s. And modern Star Wars is not. The new sequels and the extended Star Wars cinematic universe have not been as well received or groundbreaking as what Marvel's done this past decade.

So what is Disney doing right with Marvel, but wrong with Star Wars?

Discuss.

I think it could be that people are enjoying the "newer" hero's more than the "old" hero's of their elders.

It's all about nostalgia. Star wars was been introduced in the 80's while marvel studio start in the 2008.  20th century have hard time fitting in the 21st century, thus it lost it's nostalgic features.

I love Star Wars like crazy, but I must brutally criticize it for its bad features. First a few things must be said before I begin. The aesthetical aspect is spot on, but the real problems in Star Wars lies within its narrative and logic which the core elements of a good movie. I define logic as in the logic of the Star Wars universe as defined by previous episodes, not logic as comparable to real-life. The problems began in episode 7, but they are completely infested in episode 8.

Here are a few things wrong with Star Wars:

1) Disney seeks to attract people of all ages and tastes, which is why modern-day issues, comedy, and romance among other things were added in vast amounts to the Disney Star Wars universe, making modern Star Wars different than old Star Wars in a very bad way.

2) Episode 8 is full of illogical moments. Princess Leia becomes Super-Woman, Finn and Rose kiss as the Resistance crumbles behind them, everyone celebrates at the end despite the suffering and lose they encountered, sarcastic dialogue occurs every other scene, the First Order acts so stupid I question whether or not they actually have brains, fuel is suddenly a problem in Star Wars when previous episodes never had this even mentioned, Luke Skywalker is suddenly Luke-the-pessimistic-hermit, a purple-haired feminist decides to make illogical decisions and give unreasonable philosophies, I could go on for hours. Episode 7 had a few illogical moments as well, but far more are in episode 8.

3) A new director who never directed Star Wars directs episode 7, and another new one directed episode 8, causing more errors and some others that were previously mentioned.

4) Disney's Star Wars would be good if Star Wars didn't have previous episodes, that's why Disney should have created a new series and not base it directly off the old ones.

I love Star Wars, and always will, but I can't ignore terrible narrative and logic as if it doesn't matter. I could give more things wrong with Star Wars that would be more than 10,000 words long, but enough said.

As for Marvel, one reason why it's more successful than Star Wars is because Disney initially made it instead of buying it off another company.

what i feel is that episode 7 and 8 are rushed especially in 8 because alot of the new characters that were introduced in 7 just.. die off. new characters introduced in 8, die off. snoke for example, we dont know like.. anything about him, where he came from, who he actually is, and then hes gone. :yuck: its like they dont put much effort into the movies and they just see an opportunity to get money.

its almost like the main movies are just, a new hope, and empire strikes back but with disney slightly tweaking it so it doesnt look like an exact copy. force awakens is basically a new hope, people with a weapon to destroy planets show up, discount alderaan is gone, along with a few others, someone on a desert planet wants to get away from their crappy life and meets someone that will get them off planet, get on the falcon get chased by tie fighters and eventually show up on a discount yavin 4. a "help me obi-wan kenobi" is done but its a map with r2 and ben kenobi is luke skywalker, female luke gets a blue lightsaber and then the resistance has nothing but x-wings and takes out the superweapon and the first order gets away.

i wont get into last jedi but its empire strikes back with just a few tweaks in how the story is played out, but the "emperor" is killed in this one instead of the third

i just feel like disney isnt really trying when it comes to star wars, and that they arent really coming up with movies that will kind of "wow" the audience like the marvel movies have :darling:

this is just my opinion pls dont get mad at me

Admittedly I loved TFA so I was willing to give Disney Star Wars the benefit of the doubt, Rogue One came and only strengthened that feeling

Then they shit out a movie worse than Attack of the Clones which should have been impossible, which really destroyed any good will I had for Disney Star Wars, and Solo didn't help either

In comparison Marvel really knows what they're doing. Honestly I think a lot of that has to do with how Disney's less controlling of Marvel vs SW, they seem to be fine with Kevin Fiege being in charge of Marvel whereas they're much more controlling of Star Wars

The modern Marvel is similar in tone to the modern Star Wars; both come from the Disney template whether that template serves each respective property or not. Personally I liked Marvel better without Disney's influence. The same goes for Star Wars, but infinitely more. The downfall of Star Wars can largely be attributed to Kathleen Kennedy, who has turned Lucasfilm into a sounding board for her own skewed politics and feminist ranting. Needless to say, this does not help Star Wars (nor would it help anything else for that matter). Disney, as a company with ultimate control over its many affiliated properties, should exercise greater control over such things, but they lack the clarity for anything beyond politics and promotion, so much of the damage goes right over their heads until the box office returns come in and tell them something is terribly amiss. Creativity and adept filmmaking are factors desperately missing in most of the Disney Star Wars and Marvel movies, in my opinion. But Marvel hasn't got the decades of history behind it, with which to compare their modern movies the way Star Wars does. Having a great legacy to directly compare with the churned-out rubbish Disney provides now gives a huge dose of perspective for anyone who wants to compare good filmmaking with bad. So in that respect, Disney's Star Wars is going to show up far worse than Disney's Marvel.

Only thing I can write is that Marvel were smart in not introducing a massive cinematic crossover universe, but perfected it. They mostly tell interconnected stories, and introduce the characters, with an artistic liberty or two, but the main focus are the setting, story, and characters.

Star Wars for what I’ve read and hear, is another sad case of SJWs ruining a work of fiction because their political agenda comes first. Dunno by myself, not a huge SW fan, and I haven’t bothered watching the recent films
