gaming Will Esports ever be as popular as sports?

Do you think Esports will ever become as popular as football, basketball or baseball? Will the finals of say, an Overwatch tournament be viewed by as many people as the Super Bowl?

I think it depends on how popular the game is or how popular it will be. After looking it up on google, I found that 111.3 million people watch the Super Bowl. Also, I found that about 10 million people watched the Overwatch League Finals. There is still a large gap in between the two, however esports is definitely growing. If a game that was very popular came out and had esports, it could become as popular as regular sports.

It depends if you know what I mean. The major sports people watch are Football, Soccer, some baseball, and maybe tennis and golf. But anyway, there might be a possibility.

I doubt it. Considering that humanity as a whole has an instinct to drift towards physically fit units, and provided that sports require much more effort to become good at, then I believe regular sports will always predominantly outpace E-sports.

E-sports is all about playing 24/7 and learning mechanic of a game, combining it with your innate ability. Regular sports, at least majority of them, require exhausting physical training, psychological one, diet, tight schedules and much greater resistance to pressure.

E-sports may become popular, but I doubt they will ever come close enough to regular sports. Regular sports have been admired for thousands of years. Doubt this would change anytime soon.

Not for many years. Esports currently doesn't have the big spectacle that most people expect from modern sports, even if US football is mostly boring things going on in a massive stadium. Esports just doesn't quite capture that 'huge event' scale that other sports do, even though I still think they could be entertaining. If golf of all things can be seen as something that people for whatever reason care about, I see no reason for esports to be given some love.

I'll watch some people play video games because they provide additional entertainment with their reactions and commentary. Otherwise I don't see much of value in them. You could have some amusing moments in a competition but they're taking it too seriously for much of that to happen.

I also don't watch sports for some of the same reasoning but I appreciate the amount of effort, the stress and limits of the human body, and the complex coordination of your own actions and other players. I'd probably watch more sports if you couldn't trade players because I see a deep connection in state/regional pride with our teams, but it's difficult for a Washingtonian like me to cheer on the Seahawks constantly when most of the team isn't even from the area. That being said, I still get kind of excited when we win.

I'd much rather watch a paintball or airsoft tournament than a bunch of guys competing in an FPS game.

Esports tournaments already have higher viewership than many professional sports, and honestly, it wouldn't surprise me to see super bowl viewership dip below that of esports within the coming decades.

Weird. It just seems like Esports doesn't have the 'obsessive nature' that other sports do, at least not from what I have seen. For the record I thing Esports should be a legit thing, because it is just as valid as anything else in my view.

I don’t think it would. I love playing games and watching others play games, but don’t care for competitive competitions. I feel like only gamers would be interested in it so already that’s a smaller audience, but who knows.
