This was covered pretty well in the Hearthswarming story and would easily fall under that. This brings up another important point. The inter-connectivity of the races has been established since that time, and the value of the Earthpony magic is high enough that both the Pegusi and Unicorns were relying on them for the majority of their food. If this weren't linked to their magic, then couldn't Unicorns just use magic to grow food and sustain themselves? Obviously they're not doing this, so there must be more going on here.

There is an obvious thing that could have been done to make this more interesting, which would have worked if classic element-based magic existed the show. You could have had Earth Ponies in command of Metal and Fire. Pegusi control Water and Air. Unicorns control the controversial spirit element, which is much more arcane and deals with mysterious energies. But... this would also have the potential side-effect of turning MLP into a cheap ripoff of the Last Airbender.

There are probably a few unicorns that can cast that kind of spell, just like there are a few that can use weather spells. (Although perhaps less than after centuries of interbreeding.) But a few can't feed a nation - and I always figured that the earthponies were the most numerous tribe.

Anyone introduced to 'Hunter x Hunter's Nen concept?

- Earth Ponies would be Enhancers.

- Pegasi would be Manipulators (weather focused).

- Unicorns would be Emitters, Transmuters and Conjurers at the same time.
