Does anyone just ... not like Twilight?

All the Mane 6 have their anti-fans/haters and people that just don't care for them. I've seen plenty most of the Mane 6, but not many for Twilight? At least, none that weren't Alicorn Twilight vs. Unicorn Twilight, which was ... an odd war to watch unfold in real time way back then (my gosh, has it really been so long??)

Does anyone else just not like Twilight at all? With the others, I can point to moments in which I find food moments or mature moments, even Rainbow Dash, my previous least-liked character (due to how she reminded me of a lot of people as a kid), but Twilight I just can't find it in myself to think of good moments for her, even ones given by others. I just find her obnoxious, rude, privileged beyond all measure, and ... ugh, I don't like her!

Does anyone else feel the same way?

There are definitely folks who don't like Twilight. I've seen a few here and there around this forum.

I can name a few.

  1. Led her group of friends into the Forest, discovered the sixth Element of Harmony, and reunite Luna with Celestia.
  2. Decided that it was better to reject Celestia's invitation to the Gala, seeing that it only hurt her friends and strained their relationships.
  3. After trying really, really hard to adjust to Ponyville's style of cleaning up winter and failing to do so, she discovered that the whole Winter Wrap Up had been disorganized for a long time. Realizing what she needed to do, she was able to organize the teams and lead all of Ponyville to clean up the snow just in time for spring.
  4. With help from Celestia, she re-realized the Magic of Friendship, reunited her friends, and everyone defeated Discord.
  5. Although not a moment herself, it's more about her connections to her friends. The RM5 realized that even though it sounded silly and paranoid to them, Twilight was dead serious in believing that Celestia will demote her. By not helping, she melted down and felt she had to take drastic measures to complete her assignment. When she was at her lowest moment, they stuck up for her in front of Celestia and got her out of a major predicament.
  6. Trapped inside the Crystal Castle, Twilight realized that she was unable to being the Crystal Heart back to its rightful place. So, as a result, she sacrificed her test and told Spike to take that heart back to the altar.
  7. Magic alone wouldn't be enough to beat Trixie, thanks to her alicorn amulet. With a little cunning advice from Zecora, they and her friends devised a really clever plan to get her to take it off: use illusions to make her believe that her necklace was more powerful.
  8. In Amending Fences, Moondancer called out Twilight directly about how her decision to blow her party off and vamoose. Despite it turning herself for the better, it cost Moondancer her confidence and self-worth. At a time where she was at her most vulnerable, TS departed without saying goodbye to those who thought of her as a friend despite not treating them like one…and then forgot about all of them. Had she not turn into an alicorn princess, she wouldn't have had the maturity to take this painful lesson firsthand.
  9. One of my favorite Twilight moments, period. With Twilight at Starlight's mercy, she treated her as an equal instead of an enemy. After understanding that circumstances beyond her control cost Starlight her lone friend, she offered her a chance to make everything right and truly understand the Magic of Friendship. All during the highs of Starlight's pains where she was this close to damaging the timeline for good. And when it was still possible to exile her and punish her however she and her friends saw fit, they went with a more proactive approach: teach her the MoF and use their own wisdom to help her along the way.

I liked Twilight in the beginning, but I feel over the course of the show she became very stagnant. I think especially after becoming the princess of friendship, she has ascended to this level where she knows all about friendship, and she doesn't really have much more to learn I'm that sense. I wish she could have messed up more after this. She just became, imo, the blandest of the original six.

Sometimes I have those moments where I find her too rude, too controlling and taking advantage of her friends.

And also while she brought together a lot of her friends it makes me think why is she over other people more suited to the representing friendship. Is it just her status in society or her organisational skills or her hard work. She is a nice pony though just sometimes i do want to see the show more based from others perspective. Especially in the beginining lol

Also sometimes it feels like she is using spike though later it does seem like a more caring relationship ha

She does have her nice cute moments too just not my fav character or the sort of personality I relate to

I respectfully disagree. This show would be nothing without Twilight Sparkle. There probably wouldn't even be a show and the Mane Six wouldn't have made it through pretty much anything they've achieved. @Dark Qiviut described it better than me but the things Twilight has done for her friends, even flat out saying she would give up her magic in exchange for her friends, makes her so admirable and willing to do anything for her friends. :adorkable:

This may be related to the convoluted way the show handles the whole "friendship is magic" thing. The show made a connection between "friendship" and "being able to use TK to lift a very heavy rock". This lead to the interesting conclusion that a pony who can lift a very heavy rock using TK represents "friendship", even if she does not have many friends and is not interested in making friends at the time, just interested in studying so she can lift even heavier rocks with TK.

This then somehow evolves into said pony being an awesome choice to be a politician and in charge of a country.

I love Twilight, I do not particularly like what was done to her though.

She has a few hated moments, like when she treats Spike like a servant. But other than that? She's relatable, and she has a very attractive design, wings or no wings.

I don't like her as an Equestria Girl, because her face looks odd somewhat.

But here is the thing that makes most people like her, she is the mane character! We begin the story by following her, and try to fight her struggles with her. That makes her relatable. She might be the first Brony as well, who knows?

But she doesn't have obnoxious behaviors like Rainbow Dash and Applejack, that depends on the current episode writer. And Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie are obnoxious for other reasons I cannot go into.
As soon as Twilight does anything obnoxious, it gets cancelled out by something more obnoxious from something else, like Spike.

She’s cute, funny, adorkable, and had some great meme faces throughout the series. ^_^

I couldn't have put it better myself. I relate to her a lot tbh ^_^

To be fair, FiM *is* the "Twilight's path to the throne" show. She is the focus and while in later seasons there are plenty of episodes that don't directly have her as the main character, The rest of the Mane 6 -and- indeed the rest of the cast are there to support that progression.

It is plain from the start that Twi is uber-priviledged.

She was the personal, hoof-picked protégé of the sole ruler of Equestria; she had an actual princess as her foalsitter, her brother was made captain of the royal guard, married a princess, and with that princess took the throne of a neighbouring kingdom,

She nearly flunked the entrance exam to the academy because she wasn't very good at magic, and she only passed because the rainboom event gave her the keystone "Element of magic" power.

She was an inconsiderate ass to everyone else in canterlot; she was assigned an overseer's role in ponyville, ostensibly to check the work of vastly more experienced ponies, and tried skimping on that job in order to pursue her own methods instead of the tasks Celestia had set her.

So, not a good start.

But equally, her friends (Here, as we see also in EqG) were there to guide her personal growth and help her become the best pony she could be, and I think that is the point of the show. we see her go from a shallow, self-absorbed unicorn to the literal Princess of Friendship, mentor to both Starlight and Sunset, and in time, Queen of Equestria.

so I don't dislike her. She was a little irritating at first, but as we accompany her and her friends on their epic, nine-season journey, it is hard not to love all of them, not in spite of or because of their flaws, but as unique individuals we have laughed and cried with for these many years.

I can admit, the show seemed too focused on her. When it's a show about friendship, you'd think that maybe the other five main characters would be more equal to her and maybe they'd be the ones to solve a problem instead of just Twilight figuring everything and leading. In friendship, there's no leaders.

But her overall character is still excellent!

While she is my third favorite of the mane six, I have had issues with her characterization at times, but not enough to hate her. As well I can relate to her and understand her side of things. She is really enjoyable character despite her flaws! I especially was once annyed with the idea of being a princess, but after "Last Problem" those fears are gone.

I think the top list for people is usually "Princess Luna", and then "Twilight Sparkle". And the reason for being that is looks, rather than character development.

Even though she was very studios, she became more comfortable stuffing her muzzle in between two pages of a book over interacting with folks around her, going as far as dismissing conversation beyond Celestia and her immediate family. Other than her family, Celestia understood her better than anyone; studying alone wasn't going to help her in the long run. Assigning her to lead Canterlot's Summer Sun Celebration in Ponyville meant she had to meet and talk to townsponies, exit her comfort zone, and become acquainted with society, all the while knowing that Luna's reawakening was imminent. Working together to defeat Nightmare Moon and reunite the two sisters helped forge that inseparable bond.

Twilight is my favorite pony of all time and also my waifu, I love her very very much. I love her so much because I can relate to her, mostly through her personality and some of her character traits and problems that she faces. Also she is downright absolutely adorable!

I understand though if some people don't like her, they may not be able to relate very well at all to her unlike me, and they may see her traits and such as being annoying rather than endearing like I do. :twi:

Twilight character became stagnant in later seasons with occasional amazing moments like Amending Fences or Zeppelin. The fact people loves whenever Twilight acting like her old self means she really lost something in the transition. Fluttershy and Rarity are the true MVP, they are the most well-round characters of the mane 6, they are developed without losing their original charm in the first place. Twilight is my 4th favorite mane 6 just above Rainbow Dash and Applejack, that not very good for the main protagonist.

IMO she did lose something. She, essentially, was "standardized" or "normalized".

It's true I've seen comments/posts from people too.

For me personal I'm far away from it, actually Twilight is my second fav of the mane six and all the Pones.

Like any other character on this show she isn't perfect, well there wouldn't be hardly a show if she was perfect. She has far more positive sides then negative and she is also so cute :3 And she always tries. There is also this Alicorn which many people don't like, but this was also never true for me. I've always supported and even suspect happen it.

I have a big heart for her too :>
