gaming Why is Mario portrayed as a glory hog?

I've been reading old Nintendo fansites, and I've noticed a lot of them portray Mario as a glory hog who steals the spotlight from Luigi.

Why do people do this? Mario's the mascot of Nintendo, of course he's gonna get most of the spotlight.

Because he is. He's always the star and Nintendo really brings it to the forefront, even over the likes of Pikachu and Link. When Luigi upstages him he can be a sore loser. As far as Luigi goes, Nintendo themselves have actively portrayed Luigi as always being kinda shy for being in Mario's shadow and wanting to break from that. That's why Luigi's Mansion exists. Heck fucking Brawl made those negative emotions his finals Smash, they even brought in MGS2's Fake Colonel AI to talk shit on Luigi

Mario's such a sweet, decent character, and anytime I've seen him interact with Luigi, he's been nothing but loving and supportive.

Mario can get to be an ass (as shown above on the mario tennis cutscene).

Nintendo itself has took Luigi as a joke for a loooooong time, and most often than not you can see it on the super star saga games and even on his moveset on super smash bros.

Besides that, nintendo gives Mario far too much focus on everything (several if not most of the smash bros reveal trailers feature Mario on the spotlight for a good portion of the videos, for instance). We have Mario running races against Sonic as equals for the Mario and Sonic games as well. He even was the referee for Punch Out, that was more than a mere cameo.

Even if Mario wasn't the hog himself (which us unlikely given his portrayal on several spin-off games), Nintendo itself puts him on the spotlight anyway.

I will go to the ends of the Earth to protect my little red man, so I'm just gonna pose my opinion; a lot of people just prefer Luigi because he's seemingly less popular, thus why he's still portrayed as lesser by Nintendo, too. It's both a cheap tactic to not have to use him and a subtle inference to the "I like Luigi because he's not as popular!!" group.

Maybe my preference of Mario over Luigi comes from being an older sibling...either way, Toad's better than both of 'em
