Some breaking news:

Queen Elizabeth II has died, Buckingham Palace announces

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.

The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.

With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

"The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

All the Queen's children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.

Her grandson, Prince William, is also there, with his brother, Prince Harry, on his way.

RIP.

You have to appreciate just how long she was queen and all she had experienced. It's not necessarily the fact that she was 96, but the fact she was queen for 70 years. Imagine somebody being president for that long! (albeit I realize she wasn't the head of state of England). She was queen when Winston Churchill was Prime Minister! I'm not very familiar with specifics as to what she accomplished I'm afraid though, or at least can't remember. She very much became part of England's identity. Rest in Peace to her.

I found out about this roughly halfway through a ferry trip with my dad telling me. To say that I was shocked is an understatement. We all knew this was going to happen one day especially in the last several months given her health, but I never thought it would actually happen.

Doesn't affect my life in any way whatsoever. I personally see nothing special about someone just because of some royal bloodline. It is just another form of celebrity worship to me. I could die tomorrow and it wouldn't matter whatsoever but some queen dies and makes the entire world feel sorrow.

Heard the news after I got back from work yesterday. May she rest in peace.

I was almost expecting to see her around into my 40's and maybe even 50's. Feels rather surreal knowing she is gone.

It will be weird not seeing her walk next to the 47th president of the U.S thought she was going to possibly make it to 50.. well R.I.P, I don't follow royal drama, I just recall her looking the same since I was a child seeing her next to George W lol

I was surprised, as I didn't know anything about the queen's health until I heard she died. Anyways, it's sad that it happened. I wonder how King Charles will do on the throne.

*totally not up to any shenanigans* :ithastolookpretty:

Pardon me, but the fact of the matter is that constitutional monarchies are a thing (aside from absolute monarchies which there are only a few that still exist in the world today).

Canada (my residing country), the UK, Australia, New Zealand are a few examples of constitutional monarchies, in which, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was in fact the head of state in the said countries/federations/kingdoms mentioned earlier. Her son, Charles III has automatically been ascended to the throne as King Charles III as soon as his late mother passed away.

As for my general comments on the passing of the Queen, I don't have much emotional attachment to her, though I am well aware of the impact she had on the entire world, even as she was the head of state 'til the last of her days. May she rest in peace.

Long live the King.

I just saw a headline: "King Charles takes the throne at 76" Is that the oldest coronation ever?

He's only 73 though he will turn 74 later on in the year. He's the oldest in the royal family to ascend to the throne though so the headline was accurate in that. The previous holder of that distinction was William IV who came to the throne at 64 in 1830.

I must have misquoted it.

RIP :(

great Monarch who presided over her kingdom with dignity and wisdom, living up to the awesome legacy of her namesake Elizabeth I: "I observe and remain silent."

I kinda feel like all the royal pomp and circumstance is a waste of money but oh well.

It might be but it's a strong cultural thing and it attracts tourists

Anyways she lived a long and a very interesting life. May she rest in peace now

I have to agree with that personally. In the modern era, I really don't see the need for royalty. Especially in Britain.
