Dulset Tarn 441 January 10, 2015 Share January 10, 2015 Thing is, most of what Fluttershy said was right. Sure it was horrifically mean, but the fact is that Rarity and Pinkie's passions really are petty and frivolous, and they're being quite presumptuous to tell Fluttershy that she shouldn't assert herself. The important thing is that just because fashion and parties are petty doesn't make them bad things to live by. The two of them could have run off a little wiser for that tirade than before, and they do come back within a few hours not even any worse for wear. I love it because despite being mean, it's all a really legitimate rant which could really come from their friend.
Ziltoid the Omniscient 286 January 10, 2015 Share January 10, 2015 Gilda's actions and dispositon towards Pinkie Pie, and also towards Rainbow Dash, and the rest of the ponies. Also, I agree with the Putting Your Hoof Down opinion most people seem to have in this thread. But that episode actually made me laugh a bit, while the Gilda episode just made me hate that bitch. Gilda was rude for no good reason, Fluttershy was rude because she had been manipulated by an assertiveness seminar.

Megas 27,727 January 10, 2015 Share January 10, 2015 I definitely agree with the Mysterious Mare Do Well. For a show that heavily focuses on friendship, that episode did so many things against it I gotta disagree with this. The costume was there because the episode would have been boring without it, I'd rather have a boring episode that I don't hate and didn't botch the moral than one that completely falls apart just to teach a lesson Also, they were praising themselves for the ironic value. After what Dash had been doing, their self-praise is hardly worth mentioning. What ironic value are you talking about, all that scene did nothing but null the lesson they were trying to teach and made them look like hypocrites. No, because self-praise is not a bad thing. It's okay to say, 'wow, I did a good job there'. It is not okay to actively encourage your own fan club, sign autographs while ponies are in danger, claim to be better and fully believe that you are better than every other pony in the town...shall I go on? Dash has a looong list of faults in that episode, and she needed intervention. And don't even say they could have talked her down, because she was waaaaay out of touch with reality. Her friends showed her that she wasn't as good as she thought she was without insulting her or being mean. Sure it hurt, but that's Dash's fault for setting herself up for the huge fall after her huge pride. “What surprises me most? Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.” -The Dalai Lama

Thing is, what RD was doing was bad, but her friends did nothing to help her fix her problems. It wasn't until the very end of the episode where they talk to tell her about how she was doing things was wrong and she got things, right after the upstaging and the humiliating and the backstabbing Edited January 10, 2015 by Megas75

It's about ganging up on a friend, lying to her in the most passive aggressive and hypocritical way, and for the sole purpose of making her feel like utter shit and convince her of something that isn't even true, all so you can laugh about it later.

That was terrible and out of character for most of them to force Fluttershy to use her stare on the bats. 1 Signature by me Equestrian Empire Cast Characters: Daring Do, Twilight Sparkle My awesome OC
legionbrony 107 January 10, 2015 Share January 10, 2015 It didn't null their point, because they did nothing wrong by patting themselves on the back. They didn't do it out of spite, they did it to show Dash that they had good qualities too, qualities she was completely ignoring. And they DID help her fix the problem. The upstaging was neccesary to show her she was not the greatest. The costume was neccesary because Dash would not have taken them seriously if she knew it was them. Humility was the whole POINT of the episode, and there was no backstabbing. They waited until after they revealed themselves because, again, Dash would have brushed them off if they just talked to her. As for what Dulset said... that's not even remotely true. Are you saying that grouping together to help save Dash from her own rampaging ego was, in fact, a concerted effort to bully their own friend, going completely out of character for all five of them, and for no other reason than to destroy Dash utterly and then grind the bits of her that remained in the dirt? If that was the case I fail to see why they bothered to remain friends with her after this episode, or why they never bully her in such a way ever again. This was not a "let's destroy Dash's reputation for fun" episode. It was a "bring Dash down a peg for her own good" episode. “What surprises me most? Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. If you feel there is something to debate, either take it to PM, or take it to a new thread if you think it deserves it. Of course, general rules apply in regards to searching for similar topics. Plus, I and another mod had to hide quite a few posts here; some of which were not on topic, while others were quite aggressive. Dark Qiviut 22,439 January 11, 2015 Share January 11, 2015 (edited) Of course the characters were mean when they were Discorded, and of course Fluttershy was rude in PYHD... Those were not natural situations, so I don't think it's too fair to bring them up. When Fluttershy was Discorded, it was obvious she was mean, but it was also done in a semi-exaggerated, slapsticky way. But you're completely wrong about Putting Your Hoof Down. Fluttershy acted extremely cruel and unpleasant on her own volition. Iron Will never suggested Fluttershy to verbally terrorize others, physically assault someone (including swinging another pony by the neck), and especially tell her closest friends how worthless their lives are. At it's the part I underlined where it's the meanest — and arguably worst — moment of the main series. At no other point did anyone get this bad at behaving. In TRoH, Fluttershy was controlled and had her mind warped by a villain, so it made sense. But in PYHD, Fluttershy chose to insult her friends and risk killing their friendship. A friend like 'Shy would do this only when she either wanted to lie on the spot to emotionally cripple her friends or honestly thought about what she said to them since before the pilot. This isn't just out of character. It's character assassination. This isn't just out of character. It's character assassination. Well, he did tell her to "never apologize when you can criticize". I also think his methods were not really about being assertive but more about throwing your weight around and responding to obstacles with force. I'm not suggesting Fluttershy is blameless, she took the idea too far, but Iron Will gave her the idea. He may not be a monster, but he is not a very good role model either.
