gaming Lesser known gaming facts

In this topic, list some gaming facts that aren't quite as well known. It could be about a specific game, about the industry, a company even.

"Lesser known" is more or less subjective so even if someone comes in here stating something that is obvious to some let's not chastise them for it.

I'll start:

Final Fantasy VI was actually the very first Final Fantasy to have limit breaks. The thing is that most people don't seem to know this because when one reaches low health they will, naturally, heal but if a character is in low health status they will sometimes break out into a super attack that does massive damage. Most people believe Limit Breaks originated in FFVII because it actually has a Limit Break system and makes it known. It's far more subtle in FFVI and they are more like desperation attacks than Limit Breaks.

Of all the differences between FFVI's SNES and later versions there is one thing I don't think many people know: The fact that the Sprint Shoes were originally only there to give a run function. FFVI SNES doesn't start with a run function at all. On the other hand, the later versions of FFVI have a run function from the beginning and the Sprint Shoes actually make them run so fast the sprites can barely keep up with the running animation so it almost looks like they are standing still when running.

Most people think that RPGs from Japan such as Final Fantasy were the beginning of the RPG genre but in fact the Japanese took their inspiration from games that were originally made in the west. Games like Terranigma and Ultima were around long before Final Fantasy and that's where they take their inspiration from.

Animal Crossing was on the N64 first in Japan, the GCN version was a port and they filled the extra space on the disc with all those NES games you could collect

I've never played Animal Crossing (always wanted to though) but are they just collectible are they playable too? I'd guess the former but you never know...lol

Chain chomps were inspired by miyamoto's childhood experience of a dog running up to him and tried to bite him, but was chained back.

If that's real then that's the best inspiration I've ever heard lol

Dayum, I'd get that game for the NES games alone, not even counting the fact that I'd likely enjoy every single bit of the game regardless. LOL

Miyamoto took inspiration from everything, didn't he? Isn't he the one who made Gigyas?

No, you're thinking of Shigesato Itoi!

Itoi's inspiration for Giygas came from a film he saw on accident called "The Military Policeman and the Dismembered Beauty". He stumbled into the wrong theater at a young age to find what he believed to be a rape scene that pretty much scarred him mentally for life.

Though he was mistaking this "rape scene" from a lovemaking scene.

Ah, see I haven't played the Mother series so I haven't bothered to look into it much. I tried playing a patched Mother 3 a couple years ago but then I suddenly stopped using emulators so I haven't played it since.

The well-known Tetris theme is a Russian folk song.

The sprite for Registeel in Pokemon: Diamond & Pearl looks similar to a Nazi salute. Because of this, the non-English European versions have the sprite edited so the saluting arm is instead at the side. In Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, the non-Nazi pose is used in all versions.

Due to disputes over Kirby's color, (whether to make him pink or yellow) the American box art for his first game displays him as white.

DLC was invented in 1980 by Atari and a company called GameLine. Using a special device, one could pay for and download a game to their Atari 2600 through their phone line. Most major console companies in the 80's and 90's had services similar to this.

GameLine was originally planned to also provide other content, including news, email, banking, classified advertisement and even discussion forums, all years before the internet as we know it even existed. Sadly, the company went bankrupt before this could be achieved.

Boss Names in Megaman X5 are a reference to Guns N' Roses. Axle the Red is Axl Rose, Duff McWhalen is Duff McKagen, Izzy Glow is Izzy Stradlin, Grizzly Slash is Slash, and so on. Also I like this Pokemon one...

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, create the RPG game Final Fantasy in 1987 was to be the last game before he quit the industry, if the game was a failure. Fortunately , the game was a success and the Final Fantasy gaming franchise became iconic for years to come.

I've watched an episode of Game Makers (formerly Icons pre-2006) about the Final Fantasy franchise six years ago on G4. Interesting show.

Sim City 3000 has accurate land value simulation, until the whole map is developed, and land values inflate because of scarcity.

Even light residential zoned next to heavy industrial can become "Astronomical" land value if development space is rare enough.

I heard something different. I heard that originally they were going to make him yellow but he ended up being pink, and the reason he ended up being white is because the american team based him off of what they saw in the game for the color, (No color).

Ever wonder why the Regi-Pokemon where in the Pokemon games?

Reggie, the president of Nintendo America, said that the game lacked the Regginator. So they put his name on some Pokemans.

Star Fox: Adventures was originally going to be a Nintendo 64 game called Dinosaur Planet, which originally had no relation to Star Fox. Shigeru Miyamoto liked the anamorphic resemblance to Fox McCloud and had the title changed to Star Fox as a GameCube launch game.

Don't know quite how well known this fact is, but the Playstation 1 was developed from a project Nintendo and Sony were working on to create a console. Nintendo ditched the project, and Sony decided to go it alone, and then went on to outsell Nintendo immensely until the casual friendly Wii came along, and brought Nintendo's sales right back up.

And my favourite random game fact: In Japan, Dragon Quest games are traditionally only released on the weekend. This is because of how many people would call in sick so they could get the day off to buy/play it!

If you're happy and you know it you're unusual.

But that doesn't mean it's not worth trying~

The character Noob Saibot from Mortal Kombat gets his name from two members of the game's development team, Ed Boon, and John Tobias. Noob Saibot is just a combination of their last names spelled backwards.

In the concluding sequence of the Half-Life game known as "Opposing Force" there is a hidden message on the upper skybox texture. It reads: "HACK HACK HACK ALL DAY LONG. HACK HACK HACK WHILE I SING THIS SONG." This is a reference to Adam Sandler's song, The Beating of a High School Janitor. It also references the fact that the player has to "hack" the game to see the text, because it is blocked.
