Canterlot Halls, or my try at filtering the Internet

Now, we all know that there is tons of new things on the web every day and the sad thing is: We can't check it all out! We don't have all the time to dedicate ourselves to go trough the masses of new pictures on Deviant Art or the videos that get uploaded to Youtube.

 

 

Mostly for two reasons:

• There is a lot of crap or things of lesser artistic value. Or perhaps even things you don't appreciate? Perhaps you don't like the latest PMV Combining Weird Al and Pinkie Pie, or there were already too much. But there it is, taking up space and your time.

• Good Content can be rare. Because of the large amount of Data a lot of things get lost. The Artist, who might be the very next Viral Star, just lost his target audience because of something else that was less of interest. We will never know.

So my proposition is to at least try to change that, and that is why I present you a brain child of mine that I refined over the past >6 months. I tried to make it once, but I just got back into PHP and things got messy. I didn't prepare for it enough...

 

 

Canterlot Halls

 

 

 

Would be a try at changing that. It would be a Meta-Site where Artists can share their work. And where Users can discover new Artists and follow old ones.

 

Features I can think of:

• Artist Profiles, an Artist would create one and link/upload their Original Content on the site.

-Easy Access to an Artists work and able to comment on it and rate it.

-Artists can stream together their different work types, like videos, music and pictures. So you don't have to check 3 places anymore but just one.

• Discovering My Little Pony Content, and only that. Things that are not relevant to the show will be kept at a minimum. Of course there would be tags, so if you don't want to see any shipping you don't have to: you just blacklist it.

Now, I don't want to get ahead of myself, things will be probably be added if this basic functionality is present but those are the main points.

 

 

What this website would not be.

 

It will not be a community. It's main focus is to bring great content to others, sharing so to speak.

 

It's not going to replace media sites, but help discover and follow artists.

 

 

What would this need?

 

This project would need designers and programmers. The hosting and the Domain does already exist and is owned by me. ( canterlothalls.net but it's only a place holder, I scrapped the old one as it was not done and I don't like leaving half finished jobs. )

 

Now my Idea is also that it should be fun, because Team Work without fun is just painful and usually unproductive.

And because of that I invite everypony who wants to learn and help. Now I can only give advice on the programming subject, and even that only to an extent, but I believe to have somewhat of a grasp on PHP and HTML&CSS so we wouldn't wander around cluelessly! ( I hope so. )

 

 

So if you are interested shoot me a PM. Or if you are not that is also fine but I would love to find out why as any feedback is always great.

Sounds interesting enough, and I might be able to help out, time-permitting (and with due credit). I'm familiar with PHP, HTML, and CSS, but I've currently got my hands full developing the pony equivalent of Bandcamp. Still, as a current webmaster of three active sites, I can, at the very least, give you some general development and managerial advice, in addition to assistance with SEO and promotion.

 

It sounds like you've got your own hosting already, but if you want to save that bill, I'd be more than happy to give you a free cPanel account on my VPS.

I'm familiar with PHP, HTML, and CSS, but I've currently got my hands full developing the pony equivalent of Bandcamp. Still, as a current webmaster of three active sites, I can, at the very least, give you some general development and managerial advice, in addition to assistance with SEO and promotion.

Working on it as we speak. I'm working on the song upload and conversion process right now, which very well may be the most complex part of the entire site.

Already got a nice little banner up there I doubt your in any trouble with images for the site (badges etc.) but I can always make some for you if you like. Just got a drawing tablet too :]

Thanks for the offer! I bought a year in advance, but thank you for offering. ( it's just basic hosting for now, I don't want to invest more than necessary, I always have the option to upgrade should I need to. )

 

Where as about why .net. I chose that one because I think it is easier to the ear and sounds nicer "canterlothalls dot net" VS "canterlothalls dot com" that is all. Because there really is no difference. I might change that if others think that it is not. ( And just 301 one to another. )

 

I will be using this thread for updates once I start, which means, once I got my development environment all set up.

 

I plan on using CodeIgniter as a Framework as I like the MVC approach and I think it is perfect for what I intend on using it. It has SEO friendly links and a quick and fast development cycle and the fact that each part is separate means that different people can work on it without much intereference. ( Should others join, which would be fun. )

That is quite a touchy subject but yes. Nothing explicit of course, and the users could be banned ( either from posting other things or just completely I don't know yet. )

 

And to your other question yes there will be mods, although I don't know yet how they will be chosen.

And you are right to be skeptical! That is why I asked for input and for help.

 

I'm currently doing a rough draft of how I will organize all this and once I am home from my holidays I will start coding, that is the back-end which will consist of a basic user system as it is the basis of what follows.

 

Even though guests can see everything, they can't follow nor rate and review art posted by artists ( other members ) so the user system will be the first thing to do. I won't rush designing it because it has to be rock solid.

 

I'm sorry for the lack of inactivity about this! School had started and it's as hard as always with a major test at the end of the year. Then also comes the problem of the work station: My old PC had fried ( the HDD ) and I can't really work on this Laptop. ( I need my Dual Screen Setup! ) But I bought the new parts yesterday ( a friggin' i5! :flutteryay: ) so I should be able to start next week if things go smoothly.

 

So now that I have my PC built and all that I started to work on the website, thanks to Bootstrap it went rather quickly on the the front end side. It also looks good on the back end, I just have to comment a bit more should somepony else want to join. ( my code can be confusing )
