HomuraBL 851 August 24, 2012 Share August 24, 2012 : Sweetiebelle is my favorite! I love her cute high pitched voice and swirly adorable hair! That isn't a good example though. That isn't enough info for sweetie belle, you could describe a lot more about Sweetie belle. Also, Pinkie also has swirly hair and high pitch voice. So that would mean Pinkie was that person's favorite also.

brian577 120 August 24, 2012 Share August 24, 2012 I don't mind the decision to have minimum post length as annoying as it can be, but there is something that concerns me. And that is when anyone challenges this oh so wonderful decision they seems to be more often than not attacked even when they provide examples where it doesn't really work. I haven't been on this board long but it seems like descenting opinions (particularly when it comes to the mods decisions) are hunted down and shot. I was pointing out that he could be a bit more descriptive. I also pointed out why its good to be descriptive and what happens if you don't. He said that Sweetie belle was his favorite character because of her high pitch voice and swirly hair. The problem with this is that Pinkie also has a high pitch voice and swirly hair. So by that logic, Pinkie's his favorite too. He could have easily delve into what he liked about Sweetie belle's personality to have easily avoid this problem.
Somebody 570 August 24, 2012 Share August 24, 2012 (edited) Another bad news for you, we got a whole set of wacky characters that can increase this counter and be invisible at the same time! Just hold your alt button and press some certain sets of numbers! What are these sets of numbers you ask? Just google it up for yourself Instead of going through all that, wouldn't it be easier just to come up with a few more words to fill out the required limit? Honestly, for me, those situations usually require five extra words or less. That takes about three seconds to come up with, and it often inspires me to make a separate point I would not have even thought of otherwise. Just my two bits, though. I don't mind the decision to have minimum post length as annoying as it can be, but there is something that concerns me. And that is when anyone challenges this oh so wonderful decision they seems to be more often than not attacked even when they provide examples where it doesn't really work. I haven't been on this board long but it seems like descenting opinions (particularly when it comes to the mods decisions) are hunted down and shot. I don't think anyone is trying to claim that a perfect solution exists... but the fact of the matter is that the advantages such a decision brings will outweigh the burden of posting a couple more words. Just look at all those well-written complaint posts about it... they're all at least a thousand characters long. A hundred characters can't possibly be unreasonable--the few times it might hinder a very simple post is a small price to pay, if it means inspiring people to post far more than they would have otherwise. I don't think making a rebuttal to someone else's point can really be called an attack, though. Back-and-forth like that is what debate is all about. I've disagreed with the staff on a few occasions, but I was never attacked for it. In fact, if you look at the thread about the new warning points system, they're actually taking suggestions from users! I have to say this is the first forum I've ever seen to openly take user suggestions on new policies like that. Most sites just roll out stuff like that and say "We put this in, you live with it. End of story." During my time of adminning a forum, that's what I did... admittedly that's why I quit doing it. I can confidently say this site is managed far better than my site was. PlunderSteed 1,252 August 24, 2012 Share August 24, 2012 Here's a crazy idea: accept the fact that some people just don't have a lot of interesting things to say. Forcing them to speak longer will not increase the "quality", just the quantity. People with interesting things to say will say them in however many (or few) words they need. While it is true that a 100 word bad quality is never as good as a 50 good quality. But wouldn't you agree that an 100 word sentence with the same amount of quality as the 50 word sentence is better? Pinkazoid 3,493 August 24, 2012 Share August 24, 2012 Sweetiebelle is my favorite! I love her cute high pitched voice and swirly adorable hair! (89 chars.) Well Sweetie Belle is two words actually xD "Sweetie Belle has to be my favorite, I just love her cute high pitched voice, and her adorable swirly hair too!" (111, just this sentence. I didn't count the rest of the post) I just said the same thing, but made it longer, instead of "is" I said "Has to be" added a "just" between "I" and "love" and I added a "Too" in the end. Didn't change it drastically but enough to make it count as a post :3 Not really. It just means that they're compelled to yammer on unnecessarily once they've made their point. Well, the post gets deleted, they receive a warning that says not to do that again, and then it's up to them whether or not they want to do that again, they can continue fully aware that they're breaking the rules, or they can just try to improve the quality in their posts. :

I think you missed my point, which is this: in real life, it is usually better to be clear and concise. The longer you take to say anything, the more likely it will be ignored or misconstrued. This is my main reason for seeing a character limit as not only unnecessary, but counter-productive. 1 Regards, PlunderSteed Bassist, pianist, and backing vocalist for MLP-themed metal band Draconequus. Well, that's up to the reader not the poster, and it's best for the poster to have posts that actually show like he took his time to type, if the reader ignores the post, it'll be his own problem. I honestly don't see a reason on why to include a TL;DR version of everybody's post just so certain people won't have to read through-out all of it >.> :
