Recommended Posts

Hello, I’m HungryTroll. I’m living in Russia, and because I like to learn things about other places, I’ve decided that some of you may be would like to ask a question or pair of questions about life in another country.

So feel free to ask any question about me or Russia, I would be glad to answer if I can.

(P.S. We have a huge time gap between Russia and USA so don’t expect fast reply :) )

have you seen anyone wear a Ushanka?

:) Yes.

You can see old-styled Ushankas in Vilages and at solders at whinter.

And new-styled ones in Moscow and other cities. (I have one too)

New-styled looks like this -

how fast does fluid freeze before it hits the ground?

I dont think that you meant snow or hail.

In Moscow we seldom have temperature lesser than -30..35C In winter. (your using Fahrenheit, I belive, it will be -22..31F, I hope). And most of time its -25 C (-13 F).

But at the north - in Murmansk or in north siberia, (and in some more regions) fluid realy can freeze before it reach the ground (In winter of course).

At Moscow I saw only rain that have frosen at 5 second after it gets on the ground. I have long hair then, and my hair was in the shape of Darth Vader's helmet then I came home, I just standed at the hall and waited for them to melt so I can take off my jacket.

Ok, let's do it. I will try to write thoughts of most of Russians, as you asked. I believe you understand that's it impossible to speak with certanity for entire country especialy then it as big as Russia. Since I will try to observe averange oppinion it could be different from my own, so I will write my thoughts in italics. ;)

Nazi Germany and Hitler.

It will be hard to find someone in Russia who thinks positively about this part in German history. I heard rumors about skinheads who worships Hitler but never seen someone like that. "Mein Campf" forbiden in Russia, but this the same for big amount of European countries.

I agree that Nazi Germany was one of the worst events in history, and that Hitler was not very sane and good person, but he was clever man, and if you look in to the past of Europe you'll find out that a lot of old-style kings and emperors were not so different, and I hope that he was last of this type of people.

Also I dont think that World War was only Germany's fault. USSR, Europe, USA etc. took their parts too.

USA.

Ok, it will be hard, I dont think there single opinion about US, for some it's still "evil empire" as it was propagandized in times of Cold War (in USSR media US was a coutry there rules bunch of richmans who dont care about ordinary people), for some it's like heaven were a lot of money and there you can do evrything (image popularized by Hollywood films), for some it's just one more country but more powerful then others. Of couse on TV foreign policy of US are criticized, especialy Wars, again I haven't heard any politician saying that US opponent or enemy for Russia. But it's usual for them to blame US Department of State then they need to make someone guilty in protests. So it's very complicated :)

I'm from type of people for whom US just one more country. I belive that there would be World Union some day, so i think US and Russia should work together (with other coutries too, of couse). Especialy now then there such complicated situation in Arabic countries.

Cold War era.

Ah, I think you shoul make you question more clear, because i don't think that most of Russians think's about it at all :) Whats there to think about?

I think about this era positively.

Firstly it was bloodless war in history.

Secondly it's accelerated sience, it could be argued that it was weapon researches, but how mush of them was used in civil at the end? I think a lot.

And finaly my workplace was founded because of Cold War.

Argh, it was hard one. :D

Who is your favourite historical person from Russia?

Ok, lets see, I think it would be Pyotr Stolypin,

And four more people I respect:

Mikhail Lomonosov,

Peter the Great,

Fyodor Dostoyevsky,

Anton Chekhov.

And one more person, he's not really historical, he died just three years ago, but I believe that he played huge role in history of our country - Yegor Gaidar.

Is the Russian language hard to study? (I'm planing on starting to study it so just wanting to know)

I think it's easier than English on low level (basic phrases and no writing), but than you start to learn it seriosly it's becoming really hard. We have no such grammar as English have, and we have no auxiliary verbs at all, order of words means lesser than in English, but... In English only verbs changes it's forms and only in time (write - wrote - written), but in Russian almost every word changes, and not only because of time, but because of a lot of things even because of speaker's sex.

For example

Book - Книга

I love my book - Я люблю свою книгу.

I'll share book with you. - Я поделюсь книгой с тобой.

I've thought about that book recently. (male speaker) - Я думал об этой книге только что.

I've thought about that book recently. (female speaker) - Я думала об этой книге только что.

I hope I've cleared something for you and haven't dissuaded you out of learning Russian :)

I belive that there would be World Union some day, so i think US and Russia should work together (with other coutries too, of couse). Especialy now then there such complicated situation in Arabic countries.

I've asked my friends what they thinks Russians feel about US. And now I think that most of Russians thinks about USA with slight mistrust, but with hope to collaborate someday.

I've heard that there are many horrible drivers around there, and you all put cameras in the car to record the accidents to make the insurance company pay. Is it true?

And Yes and No.

Yes there a lot of horrible drivers, especially in Moscow, since there a lot of drivers from middle east, and many Russian behave badly at roads as well. But! Even after Moscow I was scared to drive in Poland, within first 15 minutes in Poland I saw 3 really serious violations by Polish drivers.

Yes there a lot of cars with cameras, they have got 3 main reasons -

1. As you said there are insurance companies who will not pay unless you'll show them a record. But it's only about small companies who makes money on it - they charge little price for insurance but to make them pay you'll have to go through seven hells. (so the moral - use big and trusted companies which are more expensive, but honest)

2. Frauds - there a lot different kinds of frauds on roads - You can just stay still and car in front of you just drive back and hit you, but one to blame would be you, if there no witness or video. And if you crash in to police car it's always would be your fault, even if it's theirs, video helps one more time. (It's not like things like that happens every day, I had seen something like that only once in my life)

3. Fun - since popularity of these videos on youtube a lot of people bought cameras just hoping to caught something interesting.

Well, none in my family including myself have got a camera and we are fine with that :)

i hate it when a llama named carl stabs me 37 times and eats my hands

Oh, so that was you? You just very unlucky guy :(

How many bronies are outta there? Are there Russian Bronycons?

Is petrol cheap outta there?

Is the influence of the state present everywhere? I mean, Russia is a huge country, is the Police present everywhere? And schools? Can a young Russian learn in a small village hidden in the mountains? These questions may be beyond your knowledge, in that case, sorry.

How many bronies are outta there?

More than you think, less than I could wish :) At least have got Brony friend, and know one more brony IRL.

Are there Russian Bronycons?

Yes, but there were only 50 people there (I wasn't there as well).

Is petrol cheap outta there?

Almost 1 dollar for 1 liter, I do not know if it's cheap for you.

Hard one, in Soviet time answer was - yes. But now it's policy of decreasing state influence in people life, I heared that schools still availible in most of vilages but I can't be sure.

About Police - the same, it's presented everythere but it's hard to react fast in really remote vilages (but most of vilages have got "Uchastkoviy" it's someone like local Sheriff).

I can't be sure about all of it - I'm city man, and never was in East half of Russia.

Are you Eduard Khul's ghost?

No, but sometimes it's like I'm possessed with his spirit and begin to sing.

Are there different Russian dialects, or is Russian the same in all Russia?

There more than 100 different languages in Russia, and a lot of dialects. :)

There two different Militaries in Russia - professional and civil.

Professional Military is well trained and uses new equipment. Yes it's powerful and strong (I'm not camparing it to Military from another contries just saying that I think)

Civil - because of that one a lot of people thin badly about Military in general, that kind of Military came from USSR and if then it was OK, it's a little wrong now - very helthy man and every women who wants it have to serve in that army, they have got old weapons (likeKalashnikov) and doing almost nothing, but it can't be canceled now because of amoun of officers serving in it, but they redusing it every year.

I have hope that in 5-10 years our Military reform would be complited, and we'll have really strong and proud army (and more than that I want world there countries will need no army at all).

P.S. And yes our army much smaller than yours cause we need not bigger one - it takes part only in local coflicts, mostly with terrorists.

How do most view Putin?

Differently (how could so many people have got only one view?).

There a lot of talks that won through frauding elections, but I dont think so, he was much ahead of second candidate, even if there were frauds - he still would won.

Yes may be he's not ideal president, but in my oppinion he's best choice for present Russia, we need him, even some people who didn't like him think the same way.

Do you know much about BRICS and CIS?

Yep, I know much, that's becouse i'm pretty interested in politics.

What is the relationship with China like? Correct me if I am wrong but you are allied with one another?

I can't say for sure, If you would ask me about our ally number one, I would name Germany, we have got really close relationship with them. And  about China never heard that we officialy have the same line of politics with them, and a lot of people do not trust china at all.

Do you have a Steam?

Nope, I don't play at all. My brother have.

Are some Russians still communists? If so I need to meet them, they aren't the only ones that think capitalism sucks.

Sorry for long answer - I had tried to find some dedicated communists among my friends and failed, there are plenty communists (of different types) among Russians, but there no in my environment (there are socialists and anarchists though).

You could try to search at this forumes for member "Dimitri Hammer", he doesn't live in Russia for long time, but he still Russian.
