So umm, this is kind of the first piece of art I have tried on, I know my lining is horrible.. I normally just sketch things as a passtime, but umm yeah...what do you guys think? Should I keep trying? and if I should. what are some good tips for lining and making digital pictures? I am a complete noob at it.

It looks pretty good actually. But I have something I think you could have done better. The eyes. Since it is a filly on this picture, the eyes should be more round. Fillies has rounder eyes. And also, it would make her cuter :)

Not a bad first!

I'd start by pointing you to this great sheet that starts covering the basics of MLP anatomy: http://fim.413chan.net/art/src/134253401649-130255119873.jpg

Of course, it's also a good idea to reference the show, draw the undersketches of characters you see while watching, and perhaps even study real-life horse anatomy (it helps with forming a style of ponies, but also helps you realize why the ponies look like they do in the show with a firm IRL anatomical backing.

And of course, practice. I wouldn't say it's "digital art" concepts you need to improve upon yet, as much as simply "art" concepts. I'd whip out the good ol' pencil and sketchpad and start drawing!

Okay ^^ I shall remember that, thanks a lot ♥

i think it look nice, but it needs more detail, it seem like one of those blank soulless figures that you come across on a car boot sale

Yeah I know, she is just a husk...a shadow of herself. Poor Luna

Wow, okay thank you very much! I will try my best ♥ time to buy a sketchpad then ^^

and I shall learn the anatomy.

Basically, guidelines that define the rough anatomy of a subject; you try to get the undersketches in place before drawing (at least, some people do, like me) so that way when you go about drawing the actual subject on top of it, you can perfect the shape and know exactly what you're drawing. It's definitely a must in digital art since unlike most traditional mediums, you can sue multiple layers and if something doesn't look good, you can erase as many times as you need with no residual marks!

Great drawing!!!! Some tips!! Adding in the pupal and white light dots :) Keep up the work!!!

Thanks Kingy. I usually do add pupils and do things a little different. Was just seeing how it looked this way ♥

Ahh, okay ^^ I know what you mean, that's usually what I do when I just do little sketches, I will work on the anatomy though, and do what you said, which is mostly practice ♥

Oh hai Woona  very cute. The only thing I would recommend while drawing Luna is she has a bit darker of a mane, but still. Good job

Always fun to see this make the rounds :)

I will try my best ♥ time to buy a sketchpad then ^^

Definitely yes on the anatomy count, maybe try colouring stuff by hand (requires good colouring pencils).

Sketchpad can yield excellent results, but is not for everyone, maybegive it a tryout before investing.

Regarding digital painting: For most show accuracy, vectoring is your friend (using Illustrator/Gimp). Takes some getting used to but is worth it.

This may sound odd, but I really like its simplistic look. :)

If you wanted to you could have out in a lot more detail into the hair and maybe the facial expression ect, but I think it would kind of ruin the simplistic look you have going at the moment :)

Only change I would make is maybe make the eyes more round so they look cuter and not as sharp :)

Good job!

Well, I don't have the money for such things really..But umm, I can try just getting a sketchpad and sketching things by hand more often.

Wow, thank you a lot ^^ I was actually going for a quite simplistic style..I thought it might be best to do that for one of my first peices that wasn't like a 5 minute sketch.

Aww, I'm sure she would love to hug you too!

and thank you for saying so! But I have such a lot to learn ♥

It's awesome! But why does this remind me of L from Death Note? Maybe it's her face expression, but I can't stop thinking about him now :I

Well that's okay, L is awesome anyway :3

A set of good pencils usually come at about 15 bugs; The only important criteria are that you can layer them (for shading ect.) and that they don't break everytime you sharpen them. Just go to an art supply shop and ask.

Gimp can be found online for free.

  • 3 months later...

I think that it's a cute little Luna. There are two suggestions that I would make.

Fillies generally have 3 white spots in their pupils. It's actually a very simple change to make.

The other suggestion is that being an alicorn, Luna's wings should be visible. Other than that however, I have to say it's a really nice first attempt.

You think you're better than the Great and Powerful Trixie? You think you have more magical talent? Well, come on, show Trixie what you've got. Show us all

I'm a lousy teacher, but I'm great at being a critic! XD

And to be honest, you've clearly got some aptitude, and a style all of your own here. The lines will find their place with practice, so I'd hardly worry about them, thats for a future focus.

But you clearly have a grasp for what you're doing though, that much is clear.

There are plenty of good critiques ad helpful bits from others here, so I can't add much except the following - Make it your own. Your style here is ultra cute, and I'm on the cusp of stopping and going "Awwww", so work with what you've got here. Build up with it, learn from it - tweak the style until those lines are solid, and the shapes are the same every time. Take everyone's suggestions, and add them to the excellent start you've got here. Keep it up. I see the makings of greatness here.

And now, before my rambling causes me to stop making sense, as it so often does, Adieu!
