Site-wide Forum Wars

I remember a suggestion like this being brought up ages ago, but wasn't sure if it had ever really been discussed. Basically, a forum games that spans the entire site, where members form armies and fight over various parts of the site. Completely optional, of course.

Just a simple version I threw together.

So there would be member made armies, led by a general (the one who made the army). Armies "fight" for ownership of various boards and sections. This is done by gaining points in different sections, which is done by posting.

Now, I had thought of several different methods for counting points, each with advantages and disadvantages.

1. Post count. Exactly what it sounds like, each post from an army member is a point. If a post is deleted, it counts as -5 points to the army, to dissuade spamming.

2. Single point for posting. At the end of each day, an army gets 1 point for each member who posted in that section. This makes spam useless, but the downside is that a long, well thought out discussion is worth the same amount of points as a few guys coming in and finding ways to agree with the OP in just over 100 characters.

3. Post thresholds. Similar to the above method, except instead of a simple 1 point per member, there are bonus points based on amount of posting. 1-9 is 1 point, 10-14 is 2 points, 15-19 is 3, 20-24 is 4, 25+ is 5. Those are just numbers I made up, and can be adjusted as needed.

4. Targeted posting. Each member has a certain amount of posts they can make count towards the points per day, meaning that you have to choose where to put your points. Adds strategy and eliminates spamming issues. At the beginning, I'd say, normal members get 3 points per day, generals get 5 or something. Personally, this would be my preferred method.

An army has control of a section when they have the most points in that section. When I say "control", it's in name only, they have no real influence over that section, they don't get mod powers there or anything. Perhaps they'd get some small, aesthetic power, like they can choose a background for that section, to mark the territory or something (approved by the mods, of course).

Also, armies have custom badges/member titles or something, so you can easily tell members of different armies apart (and because army specific badges would be awesome).

There would also be weapons for purchase (in real money), that would do things like increase the amount of points you get for posting for a week, prevent an army from getting points in a certain section for a few days, or even things as simple as gaining points in a section or "damaging" another army's point totals in a certain section.

Also, just a proposal, not at all vital to the game. Armies that are *WELL ESTABLISHED* (have X members, where X is a large but yet to be determined number, and are actually vying for control of different sections) can get their own, private board, to strategize and other stuff. Because a PM with more than 5 or 6 members gets really sloppy and annoying.

So, the site gets more money, those who wish can participate in epic battles, and all those armies that keep popping up in cloudsdale can actually mean something :D

Oh gosh. Official weirdness games?

I think forum silliness is best left as spontaneous fads rather than planned events.

Pig Rebellions would be no fun if they were on the first of every month or something like that.

This would give me a great reason to start the Zoid army again, maybe ally with Lurp so we can make a horrendous army that will probably cause the end the forums

This sounds pretty cool although I'm not sure if the mods would even make it xD

You mean without it turning into something as the ridiculous fads I've seen around (Zoids, Chat Revolution, Pig people, etc.)? As well thought as this is, I wouldn't opt for this at all.

@,

We should have Mexican Superiority Day.

The banner can be a Mexican flag and the mods can all use border patrol avatars.

Then the Mexicans take over the forums [or get shot while attempting to post].

I would actually participate on this to have some fun, but I think they should make the, "clan background for each section" optional for each member, because I for one wouldn't want my BG changed to a bunch of pinkie pies with cannons something I don't really enjoy.

Also, about the part for paying money, I don't think that would go down well. Sure, it would increase income for the site, but then the games would just basically revolve around who pays the most.

Just my two cents.

Buck it Im in. Legions of anarchy!! (If that army is even still... Existing.) We would take over your petty forums. I feel that dry and humorless section called "Questions and feedback." Could be greatly improved by some chocolate milk and a bit of rubber ducks...

And yes that is my official opinion I am the self proclaimed. "Doctor." Of the army as of right now. So im sure we can do this. with enough effort AND an alliance with the Xfizzle army!

Pretty damn sure if this thing ever implemented, everything would be ended with either Feld0's army or Crona's legion steamrolling everyone else mercilessly :/

As Scootabloom said, there will be some people who treat this like something far more serious, and ended up paying Feld0 lots of cash. But that's a good thing I believe :x

I thought about that. If everything is just based on posts, it would be a bit dull. If weapons were purchasable, they'd have to be scaled back in power so that it would take hundreds of dollars to make a huge difference.

Alternatively, there could be a system where each army gets X number of currency (bits, most likely) every week, which they use to buy weapons. It would be more equal like that.

I for one, being the S.U.E.A.G.P.O.N.I.S. (Super Ultra Extreme Awesomazing General Proven On Non Interstellar Space) [pronounced SwagPonys] would say this could be our chance for the story of Neverending Strife to truly set afoot in these forums, although this one in particular has quite alot of chaos aloof around and absolutely alternates the appeal to all areas of appropriation.

Sounds like fun. I my self was thinking of making my own army based on a clan I have had for a while now called COIDA (Clan of Inter Dimensional Agents) but I just got back to the forums so Im gonna make it later. But yeah I personally think it would be really fun as long as everything was well balanced.

I'd love to start Team Plasma (I'd be nice to have the logo under my avatar instead of a bird or whatever.) But would the mods even do it? Meh either way it's an interesting idea.

I don't know, this thread is oddly devoid of mod activity. Usually, a thread won't last 10 minutes here without a mod saying "here's your answer. Submit a ticket next time." and locking it, or at least giving some sort of feedback about it :/

Sounds ok. Not the best idea ever, not the worst. Elaborate you say? Well, I am mixed on this one, and I state that it could be good in various aspects, but poor in others. 100 characters ftw.

oh I thought this was posted in general silliness when I read this XD

uhm.. I don't know what I should think about this..

Welcoming Plaza [Ruled by: Jokuc's evil dictator army]

haha nah. As funny as it may sound, the moderators would never do this. And I'm not sure if I'd want it myself either.

And I found an issue: Everypony would make their own armies :L

there should be something like only members with 500+ posts can make armies and they need atleast 5 people to be called an army. ...Or something

I would totally do this :D

I agree with Nibblers. We should have a limitation for creating armies. Just not a so-high post count. 200+ maybe? 200 isn't too big, you need to post for at least a week or so at that, and then you could create it. But I like the 5 members pre-made.

Maybe all of the sections can have subforums for the armies? And it's only the MAJOR ones, not subforums having a subforum. Though that would be nice~

And the army could maybe be approved in a thread, and you can only be part of 1 army. That includes your own. You can quit your army, but you can't join another army for 2 weeks after you quit one. That is to stop people from creating multiple armies and to not encourage quitting armies.

My ideas are horrible. But I support this original idea fully.

I'm pretty sure this thread is invisible to the mods. Feel free to post anything you want here, because you won't get caught. Even bypass the character limit because I was 2 character short.

I remember the good ol' days, when staff would actually take the time to read the feedback. Now it seems like all they do here is just come in, find questions that have already been answered in other threads, link them, and lock them.

But when somebody takes time to post a suggestion, an apparent complete lack of fucks is given.

I'll just be posting random shit here, I guess. It's not like a mod will come in and delete it for being off topic :P

Okay, fine. I'll give you an answer.

I tried to bring this to the attention of the other mods because I really had no idea what to make of this idea or how to answer, but they disregarded me. So I suppose I'll let you have my few cents on it. (Really though, my own opinion doesn't matter as much as Feld0 himself or another admin on this. But maybe it'll bring it to their attention so the other mods can give you their opinions too.)

Personally, I think it's a cool idea. But here comes the big but. It seems like it'd be rather complex to implement. I don't see the admins really wanting to make a new badge system based on this. And further, it just seems like it'd cause a bunch of drama and forum split-up between the armies. Some people might turn it into serious business, and we don't want to cause a rift between the members. Further, the post count thing does make me a bit uncomfortable.

Even if it'd only give people a certain posting threshold a day (like 3), if a lot of people were participating, it'd be a lot of posts for us mods to cull. (Because I'm sure quite a few would decide that spamming through the character limit is a good idea to post.) So even if it'd subtract many points from them, they still might not understand what constitutes a quality post, and post crap we'll have to delete anyway. We're kind of thin and spread out as it is with the quitting of several mods, so I don't think we need anymore work right now.

And if we did do it by higher post counts, then the people with lower post counts would feel all left out and it'd kind of encourage them to spam their way to higher posts to get into the armies. It'd create just further rifts and excuses to argue between people, even if it could create a bit of fun. I don't think the forums are mature enough to handle this idea at the moment.

Overall, this seems like it'd take too much time to maintain for little reward and turnout. And I don't think it's likely to happen.
