I was thinking back, and i remember that in a couple of episodes when you looked around Sweet Apple Acres, there were pens with pigs and sheep in them. I understand the sheep, because she was obviously just shearing them for their wool, but what about the pigs? The only use for pigs that i can think of is delicious pork products. I thought ponies were vegitarians! What do you guys think?

So she keeps them to harvest their poop? thats disgusting. Either way, Applejack ends up in the wrong in this scenario. Either, one, she kills them to make delicious bacon, or two, she keeps them locked up in a pen and feeds them scraps in order to harvest their poops. Which is the lesser of the two evils, i ask you?

The great apes are all vegetarians, but chimps will occasionally eat meat. Human meat eating allowed for an increased brain capacity and directly aided out evolution.

 

We really haven't see too much of Pony cuisine. We do know they keep chickens, use the eggs, keep pigs and milk cows.

They don't have the great swaying bellies earthly grazers have. Obviously, their diet has changed with agriculture and cooking.

--Its not too far a stretch to see ponies as omnivores.

 

Its possible that ponies/influenced by a yet unknown human contact may have come to understand the joy of bacon.

Yes, poop is used for fertilizer in real life. Guess all those real life people who are involved in that industry are disgusting and evil too. The Zulu people of South Africa also traditionally used cow dung for certain purposes.

 

And whether you are vegetarian or not, you should be grateful, because in all probability, some of the food you eat was grown in ground fertilized by poop. I hope the realization is not too "disgusting" for you.

 

Apparently, the idea is that the pigs are kept for finding truffles, not for their meat. Or to win prizes for best pig, like we saw in Sisterhooves Social. Besides that, the pigs appear well treated, well-fed as seen in Show Stoppers. That's not just "scraps", that's slop, and is generally used for pig feed, again in real life.

I have never minded with that fact. Every vegetable gets washed at some point.

 

I also wouldn't be surprised to see ponies eating some kind of meat like bacon. I mean, we've seen them eat eggs which - because of their high protein - are classed as meat, but obviously, eggs are completely different to bacon style meat.

IRL pigs have been used to hunt truffles (A valuable mushroom.  Wild ones are supposed to be best) +  (as others have pointed out) composting.  There is a reason that one of the meanings of manure is fertilizer.

 

That being said, it seems plausible that the pigs are also used for meat.  Ponies make a lot of pies.  Pie crust is flour + lard (Yes, the advertising department calls it shortening.  It's still lard & it's still bad for you.)  Yes, there are all vegetable shortenings but they don't taste the same.  Diamond Dogs are probably mostly carnivores, Griffons & Dragons are likely omnivores. In Greek mythology the Minotaur was carnivorous.
