Pony plushies too expensive?

Gypmina

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what everypony thinks is too expensive for a custom plushie? I make plushies and I think the look pretty good but sometimes they just don't sell. Now I don't think I price mine too expensive (foals start at $30)especially considering some go for $100's or more. And if you were going to buy a plushie what would you want it made from fleece or minky?

I would get them for a kid, I have no want for one myself, so I would something that is built to last. I guess that's what I value most in a plushie, dependability.

I'd consider 20.00 USD to be a good deal and 30 to be a fair price. 60 would probably be my high.

I have a toddler that I made one for which is the reason I started making them in the first place...I couldn't afford a $100+ plushie for a toddler. Hers has lasted for 3-4 months so far with no visible wear on it but to sell any items marketed for children require lead testing by law which is pretty expensive. I think that is one of the reason the custom plushies are not for children.

To give an honest opinion on pricing for plushies I mush ask.

1) How much does it cost you to get materials?

2) How long does it take to make a plushie?

Well all of that depends the prices of materials are not always the same and having it shipped is not cheap. Fleece goes for $5-10 and minky goes for $10-20. It typically takes me 3-7 days depending on what is wanted.

I think a good price for a custom plushie is around 30 dollars... I don't see how people can charge 100 bucks on it... That throws me off buying them

Honestly?

When you have one that cost that much you realize why. They are so well made it's unbelievable. This may seem weird but some people won't go for cheap plush's because they don't expect there to be the same level of awesomeness there.

These are also pretty niche, I presume people prefer full size or foal size plushies, but i could be talking out my ass as well :)

Maybe you should put up a poll with some question's to see what people think?

BTW: your work is awesome :) have you posted on Reddit at all? a bit of publicity could help a lot :D

I think $30 is very reasonable for a plushie. I can see why they are so expensive though, I’d say there is a high demand of them among the Brony community. I know I want one, but I don’t have one. Between the high demand and low supply they are expensive. It’s not like you can walk into a Target and just buy one if you want.

I would have a plushie by now if they weren't that damn expencive. I would not buy anything that costs more than $40. There are ones for over $200.. I mean wtf?

Those over 200USD got a special hole.

You know, really worth it if you ask me :3

I would pay 30$ for that plushie, even 40$ is a somewhat reasonable price, but I do think that plushies are really expensive these days. How much you would charge for a grown up, normal size Rarity?

The bigger the plushie are, the harder it gets to make them. That often results in an ugly looking plushie.

I wouldn't pay more than 50$ for a custom. I mean really...some of the ones I see go for waaaay over 100$. Sure they take time to makes along with material costs, but for 50$ surely you can earn that back? Also, the only people who buy plushies seem to be the older Bronies who actually HAVE 100+ dollars to spend on plushies (which is ridiculous in itself..but your money, your purchase) while the younger fans have to settle for the Hasbro ones unless they have REALLY loving parents. Sure, ebay has a few cheaper ones that are good quality too. However, they're usually bids and then go for really fucking high prices so it's like why bother...

Also shipping costs. 100+ and another 40? Sooooo much money.

If you were to go with the Mane 6 ponies I think 30 dollars seems reasonable but for background ponies such as Lyra, Bon Bon, Colgate and Derpy I would raise it to 45 - 50 dollars due to their popularity. When I was at midwestria I saw some vendors sell plushies from 50-85 dollars. I saw some smaller sized ones that were being sold for 30 dollars but as some of the posters said above. It depends on the cost of materials and time it took to make.

Then I'd say if you are using fleece, sell them for $30 if they are in your country and more if international (because of shipping). I'd also say if you are using minky you could probably bump the price up to $45.

Speaking of which, I wish I wasn't a poor college student who had money for things like MLP plushies. :(

Well it would depend on what she was made of. A fleece one would be approx. $40-45 and a minky one would be around $55-60. But I cannot be commissioned on here until I get approval from Feld0 and I haven't gotten it yet. :(

I honestly prefer making foals and fillies/colts because the cutie marks can be a real pain in the butt. I have to hand embroider it and that takes me 2 days usually.

Thanks! What exactly is Reddit? My plushies are usually over 9" for the foals and 11-12" for the fillies/colts and 14-15" for the mares/stallions. I wanted them to be comparable in size to people like Whitedove's. Of course hers are super awesome and I am sure having years and years of sewing experience really help hers look perfect. I am still pretty much starting out. I have only been making ponies for 4 months so I have priced mine a little lower than alot of other people. I had hoped that would interest some people.

The only thing about pricing them under $50 is, Rainbow Dash for instance uses 8 different colors and you are looking at at least $80 in minky, Not many places sell less than a yard at once so you have to buy a yard. Not to mention that it takes forever to sew her mane and tail. I am almost finished a Baby Dash and her mane and tail took me 2 days to sew since I had to go back twice and redo it. Yikes!

I want you to get that persmission ASAP, I kinda see why you prefer filles, you hide cutie marks with the diapers or just say that they are blank flanks, I have no idea what fleece or minky is, I'm not aware of the fabric used for plushies. But the price for adult ones seems very reasonable for me.

To me the most important thing is that the plushie resemble the character, cute and huggable (I would abuse the third characteristic :blush: )...another question, how would you charge for custom ponies, like OC's or ponysonas?

Well, since I do not know how to sew plushies (or anything actually), I am not aware of the pricing of plushie materials or how time consuming is tends to be. The one in the OP is reasonably priced IMO. All I was trying to say the absolute *most* you should pay for a custom should be around 50$, *maybe* 100$ for a bigger one. The ones that go for 500$ seem ridiculously priced...

(Also, the plushie sizes listed are huuuge and so reasonably priced, not to mention adowable  )

Well I charge by the number of colors, the kind of pony (Earth,Unicorn,Pegasus), difficulty and accessories. I am trying to get the number of required posts but it is hard to find much time to type on here because I have a toddler....2 mins at the computer and my living room is destroyed! I have 5 more. I am almost a "known" member. ;)

Reddit (or www.reddit.com) is a place where people post thing's and other can upvote/downvote it and comment on it. reddit.com/r/mylittlepony is where all the pony folk hang out :), what you can do is post saying "i'm a new plush maker, what do you think" and then give people images and get feedback from people :)

I'm not very good at explaining it, but if you take a little while to get accustomed to it before posting to see how it all work's so you can make the most of it, it can be a great help in promoting your work's :D!

Thank you! I do think some people take advantage of the fact they can sew to charge too much for them but hey people buy them still and once you list it on ebay it can be out of your hands. I do wonder though if some comments made on DA can be detrimental. You always have the critics that like to pick it all apart. I did get the one comment that "ALL" the other plushie makers donate all the money from plushies which I know for a fact to be false. It makes you look bad that you don't to anyone who doesn't know better. I do know that some plushie makers have charity drives to raise money for a charity and if you donate you are entered into a drawing for 1 or more plushies. I will be eventually holding a drawing for a plushie but it will probably be after christmas and will be for my watchers on DA

On Ebay there's pony plushes that go up to $4,000.

It's insane...but there's SO much want involved.

I really don't think Hasbro realizes the potential in making show accurate plushes. I'm sure at least every brony would buy the mane 6, plus others as they made them.

I would. xD

The most I would buy one for is $20. Maybe thats why i dont have one... And for $100 dollars it better be able to shoot lasers out of its eyes and fly.

I like the pictures of what you made. Could you, by any chance, be commissioned to make a Soarin one? I agree that the steep price of over $100 is a lot of money to spend on a custom plushie. I found some good plushies online of Soarin but the price really tossed me for a loop! However, I doubt they'll make a Soarin one anytime soon officially since he's a secondary character.
