Recent fandom observation...

So I've found, recently, that there seems to be a trend in our little community. We all seem to be devoted to one pony site or the other. For instance: a brony that contributes to /mlp/ will shy away completely from this site or EQD, while someone that is involved with EQD will despise those that post on /mlp/ or on here.

 

It's like we think that the people on one site are somehow better than those on another. Aren't we all bronies? The point of MLPforums, EQD, /mlp/, ponychan, FIMfiction, and every other brony site is basically the same: bring bronies together to discuss pony related stuff.

 

This will probably end up adding to my list of threads that wind up with two comments and are then lost in obscurity, but hey, do you guys have any thoughts?

You bring up a great point. I suppose some bronies just don't like the website's organization and whatnot, or if some sites accept fanart and fanfiction more easily than others. I dislike Equestria Daily because its community is extremely biased, but it's just my opinion.

 

The problem with some bronies is that they fight even within each other, simply because they are so obsessed with their favorite pony, site, whatever. (I kind of am, but not to that level.)

I dont participate with EQD often because I never really like reading all the news and possible spoilers. I stop by about every other week to pick up some new backgrounds to use, but that's about it. I don't even mess around with all those other pony sites. Don't really feel a need to, I can get my pony fix from the forums just fine. I also noticed that people here are very eager to meet new guys, didn't have such a great experience with EQD.

I mostly stick here due to a general lack of time, really. Given the fact that I'm employed full-time, have a number of non pony related interests, and spend more time than most people would expect on random chores and site work here, I'm not left with a huge amount of time to explore elsewhere. I used to read EqD religiously, but that slowly declined as I became more and more active over here, for example.

 

Also, keep in mind that different sites cater to different subsections of the pony fandom - both by way of the content that they serve, and the rules they keep.

I actually stopped reading EqD completely just prior to the Royal Wedding thing, because I wanted to avoid all possible spoilers - even little things like information regarding promotional stuff. As a result, I was able to go into the episode without knowing a single damn thing about it, which is exactly how I like it.

Now that you mention it, yeah. Only time I ever go on EQD is when somebody here posts something cool they saw there. I'm not really into fanfiction, so fimfiction and like 70% of EQD already doesn't have my interest because of that. /mlp/ and ponychan are also strictly pony related, and honestly, I only really talk ponies when new episodes come out. I'm here because all the non-pony related boards are full of cool people.

That actually happens to match my own sentiments. I don't like EQD not only because they are overly picky about fanfiction, but because they are inconsistent in their judging system. Whether a work is accepted or not is largely based on popularity and whom the author knows. What really bugs me is their elitist attitude towards FIMfiction, one of my favorite sites. They say that FIMfiction is always there for "those kinds of things" that don't meet their popularity standards.

 

How does elitism fit in with love and tolerance? The brony community is about accepting everyone, not about popularity contests. Also, I personally despise elitism. I can understand friendly rivalries, but once one side gets on a high horse and puts down everyone else, I want nothing more to do with them. I only go there when someone else posts something of theirs, and I've occasionally relinked those items in my own posts for the information.

 

That's the only site I have issues with, though, and it's only their policies I disagree with. I personally don't care if someone frequents that place, and I have nothing against their members.

I think this sorta thing is in every fandom not just Bronies, I've gotten to know the crazy little (quite big) fandom known as Nerdlingers aka Futurama Fans for I am one of them. I have feeling some other MLP sites aren't very welcoming or nice just like the Futuram fandom's PEEL, which is the biggest Futurama forum on the Internet and best for Futurama news, but it's also full of Internet Trolls, (some nice members too) elitist jerks and pointless fighting, with Admins and mods that don't care at all with their users do really. Good, in it's own way, but certainly not a friendly community.

 

One of my friends on PEEL (a nice member) was harassed so much he left the whole fandom for awhile, but came back and vowed never to return to PEEL, so he just hangs out on FMMB (Futurama Madhouse) and FFF (Futurama Fan Forum) now, and that's just one of the reasons while I rarely post on PEEL,

 

While there other sites such as the FMMB and the FFF that stomp down hard on Internet Trolls.

Hmmm, well, from personal experience I only lurk and post here. The only time I find myself on EQD is because of a link I click on here and I can’t remember the last time I was on /mlp/. I don’t feel better than anypony else, it’s just I love this site and I suppose for me it’s a loyalty thing.

I don't really go on EQD that much because I'm not that interested in news/spoilers. I sometimes check it though for when the new episode is, or if SWAG.MOV is up (it would probably be featured there when it is) or to see if one of my videos got featured (I got featured, but only once... still awesome though)

 

I've tried about 3 other MLP forums, and I'm not sure why but I just like this one the most. I thought I would like one with a shoutbox on the main page, but I just... didn't feel... [insert appropriate word here] at there. I don't know why I like this forum the most :l

I agree with you. Everypony thinks one site is better than the other.

 

What I think it is is that some ponies prefer the CONTENT shown on each of the sites. EQD always shows news of ponies, while fanfiction sites show fanfictions. Coming to another pony site that doesn't really focus on the things their original site provided often makes them bored with it. They just prefer the different type of content on the other sites. Still, I don't see why they have to be so boastful about it.

 

I personally like these forums because it's a place where all the pony related stuff are: art, chat, news, everything. That's why I like the forums. Plus, talking with everypony is so fun, and I love hearing other pony's opinions.

i venture around mostly i still visit 4chan and Equestria daily and even Pony chan (but that's not too often), i'll rearly ever go to FIM fiction and i avoid Equestria forums i don't like because most of my encounters and debates there are the reason I'm an Anti-Brony

also it always fun to go to a anti-pony site because behind all the people who hate for the sake of hating there are so truly awesome people

I'm actually well spread out. I read EQD daily, also going around in here, and on other sites with brony communities or for bronies such as Fimfiction. But I do agree with you that each site's community is unique in their own way and they associate better with each other than the other groups.

 

It's a trend actually for most website communities to remain mostly where they feel comfortable, so it's not surprising to me.

I honestly don't think I've ever been to EQD. Honestly, with all the negative things I hear about them, I kinda don't want to visit. Who wants to be all uptight and snobby? (Blueblood! That's who!) Nope. I'm fine right here in good old Ponyville with my good friends who don't feel the need to ever be mean to anyone. (We love you too, Rarity.)

I do rarely go to EQD. But at the same time I have started frequenting /mlp/ (and 4chan in general) more and more for some reason. This will still be my home, but I do hang out at /mlp/ somewhat. Why pass up the opportunity to see one hell of a funny thread?

 

Of course, I don't visit there anywhere near as much as here, but I do go there somewhat often.

That's not true at all. I don't judge people who go to a different site. I just don't go there myself because I'm used to this site, already registered and it would be hard to devote my full attention to both sites.

I'd really like to make an opinion on this, but...to be honest, I can't. Or at least not a totally correct one. I don't think I've been in enough sites to say something about each. I don't really have any critiques to any site at all. The only sites I spend my time in are EQD, here, and because I normally like other things, FOB Equestria, Derpy Hooves News, The Round Stable, Everfree Radio, FimFiction, and I think that's it. I don't know just HOW elitist is EQD to be honest. I've heard too many bad things and good things, so I really don't know what to think, and it's the site I frequent the most, and one I'll never stop visiting, as much as the others. I know getting in EQD is hard, but...I think, that the reason they get so many bad things is about there choosing, is because there isn't as much things as people would like to have, considering just HOW MUCH there is in this community. But honestly, I don't believe handling a site like EQD is easy. I don't know just how many people handle it, but it's probably not only not easy, but it's also not easy where and how to choose. After all, again, there are SO many things PER DAY that who knows just how much it would take to get them all right. I think they are a bit allowed to be somewhat biased, especially on the popularity thing, because they have to try to put the best, as if it was a true news site, coupled with the music, fics, art etc. And it's not easy to check it all in time to make everything in a somewhat scheduled update, which even now it's not exactly as a precise as a clock. But then again, this is me. I don't really know. Hell, this could be me just being innocent.

 

The reason I go to other news sites, is because EQD CAN'T have it all, so the more the news site I visit, the more the variety I get. SAme reason why I subscribe to different musicians to get different things, and same reason why I go to both Fanfiction AND FImFiction to get variety on it.

 

I don't know about people defending sites, but I AM sure that people will prefer, and probably defend, much like Brisineo said (I'm sorry, I don't know how to mention people here ), the one site they feel asociated with, and the one they are more comfortable with. But, that's all I can really say. This is just my two cents though .

I don't think you should close down EQD based on what others said...but then again, you do what you want (I'm not even sure if you are joking or not ) . Besides, EQD is like any other site that provides brony/pony related news/content. If you want to avoid any discussion, just go there for the content, and over it is!

That is a good observation but there has to be a deeper reason for the site singularity. In my case, I stick to this site and EQD because I am familiar with these sites. I feel like that if I go onto another site like BronyNet for instance, I have the most difficult time working the basics and I usually make myself look like a fool.

I couldn't agree more with ya. Bronies are bronies, no matter where they come from or where they spend their time.

 

I'll be honest though. I've never went to EqD or /mlp/. I just don't feel like it's something I have to do. I mean, I already got an amazing brony community right here, I don't really feel the urge to go explore more MLP-related content all over the internet. :|

 

So I guess I can't have much opinions since I don't know if the community on the other brony sites are somehow different from here.

I see...still, I get what you mean. Especially because one becomes curious to see if it's really THAT bad, and especially if there have been good opinions about it.
