MLP or Fan Created MLP?

So what are you a bigger fan of? The show or the fan created content? I have loved the show for a while now but you can only watch the 52 episodes so many times before you memorize almost every line of dialogue.

 

Currently I am a regular visitor of FIMFiction and I fear at the rate I am consuming the material daily I will be left without by the years end!

 

Also the endless supply of extremely intricate artwork and equally amusing comics that Equestria Daily informs me of never ceases to leave me in awe. Not to mention the music it inspires!

 

It just fills me with such warmth to know I am part of something much bigger that brings happiness to so many people. If only I were more social, I would love to meet some fellow bronies to share the joy its kept with me in these darkest of times.

 

)Actually, I wanted to post in the life advice forum but since it requires a 40 post minimum, I instead opted to distract myself from the dark proceedings that currently plague my mind in favor of something that brings joy to my world.(

 

But yes, back to the original question, what are your thoughts?

 

Does fan created content add to or detract from the overall enjoyment you find of the show? I look forward to reading your responses!

Depends. Some MLP fan created stuff are absolutely disgusting and just...stupid.

 

Other stuff, like fanfiction and art, can really make you feel emotion much more than the 52 episodes...

I don't really know. In both the actual show and in fanon, AJ doesn't appear a lot.

Personally, I prefer the actual episodes rather than fanmade content. The show is a main course, while fanmade stuff is the side dish

 

Yeah, i know some fanmade stuff can be extremely brilliant on their interpretation of the show, but more often than not the artists inserted a bit of their own version of MLP to it (psychotic pinkie, bipedal dark-skinned rarity, dead but not-so-dead rainbow dash, discord as a foal), those stuffs kinda ruin the mood, I say.

True true!, I do find myself mentally blocking out the "less than desirable" content our community chooses to dredge up. But it was only through some truly inspired fiction that I finally understood the meaning of those captioned pictures of spike with the "HNNNNNGGGGGHHH" plastered below. So many feels, manly tears were shed, the whole nine yards haha!

 

In regards to Applejack not appearing alot, I don't know how you feel about shipping, and I don't really know what my fascination with it is, but there is a treasure mound of Applejack stories to be found on the aforementioned FIMFiction website. Just put the proper filters in the search.

 

Also NOT TRYING to sound like a promoter of Fimfiction, its just really good!

As I've always said, the show is the roots, and the fandom is the blossoming tree. It's the show that supports the fan content, and that allows it to expand and develop over time. I personally love the fan content in this fanbase to a fault. There's endless amazing, cute and funny art of ponies that I enjoy stumbling upon and looking for, there's endless fan music that I download on my I-Pod and listen to, and there's animations that I wait for and watch with wrapped attention.

 

In the end, it's not a matter of 'liking one and disliking the other'. The fanon can't exist without the canon, but the canon by itself is limited to what the animators, writers and artists actually put into the episodes themselves. The fandom takes the canon and stretches it to new horizons of possibilities through art mediums of all kinds. You don't have to agree or even enjoy whichever fan content you want, but it's there, and a lot of it does make the show better in my opinion.

I do know that AppleDash is probably the most popular shipping in the whole fandom, and I ship them too, but still. AJ still isn't shown a lot. Show or fanon, they show Applejack the same way. A simple farmer working at Sweet Apple Acres. I can't decide which is better because they're both the same. No new perks for either.

To what Spencer said about the NSFW, (once again I sound like a promoter but I swear I'm not!) that's another thing I love about FIMFiction, they have a button specifically to block out "mature" content so you don't even see it! And anyone that has been to Equestria Daily knows they keep it moderately clean! A great atmosphere to further immerse yourself in the wonderful worlds others have created!

I agree there, she always has been portrayed in that light. But what else would she be? I mean, its clearly sticking to the canon material, and she had her bit where she tried the high falutin' city life. What would you expect of her? I ask in all honesty as I intend to start writing some fanfics eventually.

I would have to say the show. Granted, in most cases I would pick the fan content. But in FiM's case, the show is really fun and memorable. While the fan content is still great, adding new perspectives and humor to the franchise, the show is extremely well made.

Intriguing! I had an idea creep into my head when I woke up today, Actually I think it was a tail end of a dream that I managed to maintain a hold on. I pictured Rarity, on a date with some colt, and at some point the colt mentions to Rarity that he wouldn't want to continue to date her because she is too boring, At first this doesn't affect her, but eventually she starts to warp everything about her until she is a death defying thrill seeking adrenaline junkie! What do you think?

I like both, though a lot of fan made stuff is meh or downright terrible like the endless amount of completely awful unoriginal overpowered mary sue alicorn OCs in fan fiction.

 

Seriously enough with the alicorn OCs, unless it's very well written and not a generic pony you make in a pony maker software with a lame background.

 

I love all the crossovers fan art and fan fictiom, it helps save small fandoms from completely dying out.

Indeed, my favourite on as well. I am personally mostly here for the community, with the show being something awesome that holds it all in one place. I hold both the show and the fan content on the same position, as both are important. About fanfics, don't really read any, only ones I have were Cupcakes and Rainbow Factory, because I was dead curious to see what happens and what all people go crazy about -_-

About NSFW, if a person likes it, I don't blame them cus i do myself Didn't say that. But yah, whoever thinks it sucks should just keep out of it. There's bound to be such stuff for every franchise out there. About the people who spam it all around, they're just jerks.

On this topic, I'd have to say that I'm more a fan of the show itself, mainly because, especially with fanfiction, I never get around to finishing a story, I've only finished like... Maybe a couple stories.

 

Although the fan animations, now I really love those, and I find them to be extremely cool.. Just wish someone could animate MLP again with their Flash skillz, and make it so all the mane characters were colts or something, would be cool.

Both are good IMO, but the show itself is very limited, only season 3 is coming out pretty soon only with 13 episodes.But with the millions of fans in the community, everyone makes endless mlp-related entertainment everyday! (not to mention the fan-made episode ^.^ )

I hate the NSFW, dislike most fanfictions(Cause they're usually dull) and the pictures are mostly clopping material. Other than that, fanmade art is pretty gud

 

But most fan art isn't clopping material a lot of it is actually pretty good I too dislike the clopping material but if people like it let them like it we can'r stop them. As for the FIM fictions a lot of them are very good and quite the opposite of dull to be honest and c'mon you have to love My Little Dashie its so cute and sad :3

It's odd because I'm a huge Harry Potter fan as well, and in that fandom, I prefer all the fan-made stuff, all the fanfiction and stuff. New looks at canon, complete divergence from canon, etc.

 

But when it comes to MLP, I really seem to prefer the actual show. I haven't really looked at a lot of fan-made things at all. I should start.

Chaotic is right. Without the canon there would be no fanon. Fan- art and fictions can be really emotional, and actually have made me cry before. The show is the roots of the tree though, so I must say I like the show more.

I feel that no matter what you love more, you have to love the show as the base of your attraction or else you wouldn't like the fan-made content in the first place. After all, it IS some of the fan-made work that gets some people into the show in the first place! But, while it is fan-made, it's based on the show and the style itself which is the overall attraction. When you're reading a pony fan fiction, your mind's eye creates the image of the pony/ponies you're reading about.

 

As for myself? I'm a huge fan of the show first and a huge advocate of the art created in the community second. C:

Easily the show. It was what brought me in not the community(as cool as it can be). I've read a few cool fanfics and heard some good music but I've yet to see a fanfic that surpasses the actual story of anything, much less a good show like this. And as for music and art/animation the show has that in spades
