A brony without ponies...

Recommended Posts

So basically here's the thing, i'm 17 years old as of this post, will be 18 in around a month.

It's recently come to my attention, that despite the fact i'm obviously a brony (would I be here otherwise?) I actually have nothing to show for it, and im not even sure what I should have.

My mother came home the other day and brought my little sister one of the blind bag ponies that you can get, (I believe it was Golden Harvest?) i've also seen several YouTube videos of bronies showing their collections, posters, Lyra plushies etc. and this got me thinking...why dont I have ANYTHING pony?

I'm a HUGE fan of the Halo series, and I have Halo posters all over my room. I have collectors edition games, keyrings etc, and im just as big a fan (if not bigger *gulp*) of MLP:FIM. So why do I have nothing to show for it?

The reason i've made this post is because I feel like i've let the bronies down, and myself in some way, just because i've not actually got anything. I mean I dont even know where to start when it comes to collecting things, or making things, or contributing to the fandom or anything even pony related, I enjoy drawing, and I have a few pony doodles around my books and such, but looking at memes and drawings online of MLP characters just deflates me when I look at mine. (It's just me, i'm strange OK? I love Halo and i've learned just about everything about everything there is to know about it.) So what should I do to sort this out? Where should I start on collecting things? What should I buy first? What should I not buy? Where the heck do I buy these (i'm from the UK, keep in mind).

TL;DR - What pony merchandise should I buy? Where from? And what should I avoid?

you don't have to own anything pony to be a brony, just watch the show and enjoy it (and maybe follow the love and tolerate rule too :P ). When and if you finally decide to get something just make sure you enjoy it thats all.

Buy whatever appeals to you based on what you've seen in other people's collections. There is no established minimum amount of pony merchandise one must own to be a brony either (in fact you don't need to own any, so don't think any less of yourself). Just get what you would enjoy. The blind bags are my personal favorites for accuracy, but some people prefer brushables for their size and the fact that they're... brushable.

I haven't seen many "official" MLP posters aside from some free ones that were available at Walmart for a time, but you can get a ton of amazing fan-designed posters, shirts, bags, and various knick-knacks from welovefine.com. The only problem is that they're an American company and shipping costs to the UK will be astronomical. There is a cheaper solution for the acquisition of posters though. The official ones that were in Walmart are gone now as far as I know, but there are high-resolution scans of them online and a few fan-made, but official looking poster images on Deviantart. You could download them, take the files to Walmart or any other place that offers image processing services and have them print out posters for you. It would be much cheaper.

You can probably find calendars at pharmacies, your equivalent of a "dollar store," and any other place that sells sub-par bargain bin items. I got a 2013 calendar from a Dollar Tree and have yet to find a single calendar at any other big-shot retailer like Walmart or Barnes & Noble.

I'm also a huge fan of Halo, and the reason it's easier to collect items for say a Halo collection is that items related to it are more available. The closest place to me where I could buy pony stuff is a few miles away. So availability could have a lot to do with it.

Like the others said, you don't have to own anything. If you really want something, then you should get it. You shouldn't feel that you have to have something. I've got a brony bracelet/wristband and I'm happy with that for now. Maybe in the future I'll want to get more stuff, but for now I'm good with what I have.

Don't feel obligated to get something.

You haven't let anyone down, don't think that! Pony merch doesn't mark you being a brony. I can think of many reasons why, but think of it this way. There's probably a LOT of people who don't have/can't have pony merch, but they might as well know a LOT of the show, which totally indicates they are a brony.

Like Fridge say, if your heart doesn't want pony merch just yet, then don't buy it. Just do it whenever you feel you'd like to have pony stuff around in your house. That's all you should really care about. You do stuff you like, not because you NEED to. Otherwise...the fandom would have really fallen low. Which I know it hasn't. :)

Im a brony too and i don't have any pony merch at all either so it's all good. Really what makes you a brony is just watching and enjoying the show plus your knowledge of the show basically makes you a brony not what you buy.

Also if you are just happening to look for some pony merch it's proprably best to buy it off the internet although it totally depends on where you live because where i live no pony merch even exists here so i couldn't get anything even if i wanted to.

The quality of official merchandies kinda sucks neway, I've been thinking of forcing political prisoners make some for my personal collection but I just haven't had the time for it.

I would personally like plushiest and life sized models.

I've only got a little rainbow dash sitting at my desktop right now watching me type, although she doesn't look that great (I don't know why Hasbro made them like this) she's got awesome hair. Just like play around with the hair all the time, just got it from Argos. Rarity looks pretty good though.

Tbh if I've got a good enough database of pictures and comics or videos or something on my computer/phone then that keeps me happy.

This is my fave :D

Well, first off I LOVE Halo myself so /) there’s that :D

I don’t think you need to have huge collections to consider yourself a Brony. To me, a Brony is just a fan of the show, which you are. I know exactly what you mean though about contributing to the fandom though. Right now I’m learning programming that way I can help other Bronies develop some of the few MLP games we have out there. So I know where you are coming from there. Overall, I wouldn’t worry about it. I think just being a fan is enough. :)

Also, @@CMC Ryan, is right I have two WeLoveFine shirts and they are amazing so if you are looking for merch that is a good place to look.

it's pretty hard to get MLP:FiM merch over here, but I've seen some in Argos before, but it's only the toys, a duvet set and the blind bags.

@, I am not really sure about the official pony merchandise. It is usually not that great altogether... I would suggest trying polymer clay. I don't really think I am artistically skilled, yet I make my own pony stuff... And I am proud of it. (Shameless plug goes here :D):

It's not about how much merchandise you have, or how good of an artist you are. It's about liking the show and being who you are....and yes that did sound like a cruddy Disney moral, but whatever I just wanted you to know that.

Bro, Brony means that you enjoy the show. I don't have any pony merch that I've bought either! I've got a derpy poster and a pony form Europe, but those were both gifts from friends. You haven't let anyone down, calm yourself sir.

I find comic book conventions etc are the best bet in the Uk. I'm going to one this weekend in Brum so I should be able to get some more stuff, if I see anything I like particularly that is.

I never seem to be able to even get to comic book conventions haha.

There's either never any around me, or I just completely miss out on them until like a month after they've gone.

Like I said my little sister has one of those blind bags, it's REALLY awesome and I keep eyeing it up lol.

I think i'll try to collect those, only thing is my parents went to skegness and won it from the arcades there...so IDK where to get them from other than there.

As for T-Shirts...they would be my favourite thing to get. I dont know if anyone watches Achievement Hunter videos here, but Michael Jones has some amazing Tees I would love to have, so i'll have to check out that website you all recommend :P

The blind bags? Tesco, Asda, Toy's R Us and The Entertainer have them usually. Although if your after the 1st set you've missed out there since they're all crystal versions now.

spending money on pony merchandise is all about pleasing yourself. you invest in it because you will enjoy it. our opinions of you wont be any greater or lesser because of what pony stuff you have or dont have. if you see something you like, dont think about it too much, dont hesitate. just buy. enjoy!

Well as it's been said, at the minute im not really after any particular thing, but they are the ones that take my attention the most, they're adorable, and I would just love them plastered all over my house lol. I'm not really too concerned about what I get either.

I've just thought, I bet there are people selling them on ebay too.

I've seen a few on ebay yeah. In varying prices.

Well at least the blindbags are cheap enough. I think maybe £1.50? Actually I have a bunch of the ponies from blindbags my gf bought and got doubles of lol.

Moved topic to Pony Merchandise because the OP seems to be asking about that sort of thing mostly.

Anyway, I don't think merchandise is absolutely required as a brony, but it's nice to have- I only have very few blindbag ponies and cards for example(but my real favorite merchandise is the DVDs), but you can certainly live without them though. As long as you watch the show you're a brony, no need to be jealous of others. ;)

I'm a big Halo fan too, i also got Halo posters on my wall, but inbetween all of those posters, there is a single Twilight Sparkle poster, a blind bag isn't that expensive, you're 17, you should have a couple of (Enter currency here) lying around somewhere go buy one!
