Real Name on Youtube

I, to be honest, hate the idea of putting your real name online anywhere

It tends to cause a lot of problems one of them being identity theft like Khaine21x3 said and it is really not worth it

I don't use my real name often online. Only place I think I've ever really put it was on the Facebook account I use like once a month. On YouTube I stick with using my account name, always have since April 12, 2008. I also don't usually use my real date of birth (maybe due to the fact that I'm a minor...) I just put 1981 (relevant to the amount of copper they put in pennies (you have the Internet, Google it if you need to)- just an easy date for me to remember for that one odd reason) so I guess I'm 31 on someplaces in the Internet, over double my real age.

I don't use my real name on YouTube. I guess it would make sense if you're more of a professional videographer, like if you do professional work and post it on  YouTube or whatever, but for most people, it is completely pointless, and it kind of takes away from the experience.

Let's say Feld0 decided to require you to use your real name on the forum... Wouldn't it be a little weird to see a post by "Jason G" and not "Kapi"? I don't do this for a living (Of course!) so I have no reason to be professional about anything!

I'm not afraid of putting certain information on the web. Its too easy to find my first and last name, you could find my address if you wanted to (through WHOIS records) and my date fo birth is pretty clear. I'm sure with the right technology, someone could figure out my Social Security Number, but I'm not too worried, I keep a good eye on all my records!

Real personal information will only hurt the average user and it will not affect the trolls or more tech savvy users. There is absolutely nothing anyone can find on the net about me or even anything they can dig out of my IP adress and all my sensitive files are heavily encrypted so they cannot be cracked even by government agencies.

I have security stuff all over my computer.

I don't even know if I've written my name on anything on here, including documents.

I'm just really uncomfortable with anything being out there, so I put my screen name instead of my real one (yes, I have a fake name...I use it when I write, too.)

I try not to spread my last name on the internet. I have no problem sharing my first name though. For example I'll say right here, my name's Matt.

YouTube was being a little brash making this decision. The countless times it tried to get me to I ignored tham all and quite frankly it was pissing me off.

It's kinda fun though to set your name as like Clint Eastwood or Nightmare Moon or something. ;)

Yup, I really dislike that :( Had to split my nickname into two parts to bypass this stupidity.

However, I was quite pleased when I set a stalker contest with a fellow pegasis a few weeks ago - we both tried to figure each other's name based on things we know about the other person (nickname, interests etc.). The good thing is that we both had to supply a really large ammount of additional info (e.g. to which school each of us goes) until we were able to reach the actual names.

I don't care if people know my last name, my full name is Jason Glose. Google it, you may find me, you may not....

But I certainly agree, YouTube kind of just pushed this out the door without a second thought. Actually, khaine21x3 said it quite well...

The whole reason they pushed this was to try to get the trolls to stop trolling, and the spammers to stop spamming. It doesn't make much of a difference, you could come up with a false name and you've just passed the gate. It was really pointless..

Yeah, I use my middle name, Joy, and a fake last name. Way easier to remember than my old name.

But yeah, I'm not comfortable using my full name, especially with my mom big on internet safety and thinks Facebook is out to "destroy the world". Or Google is.

If I had to use my real name for everything I would close my accounts on everything I dont like that someone could see a comment from me on youtube and then just google my name and theyd have my facebook my google+ and all my other shit. its stupid.

Yeah, me too. I mean if some of my classmates already know about my other youtube channel from which I keep MLP stuff out, and if they knew what I'm doing, I'd become the next one who committed suicide because of the internet...

I avoid using my real name. Instead, I have over a dozen aliases, which all sound pretty real so people think they have my name when they really don't. I usually just go by my username/ screenname as much as possible though. Using pseudonyms also comes in handy for keeping my different kinds of art and written work separate.

On Facebook I'm known by a nickname so only people who know me will know that it's me. I also always lie about my birthdate everywhere on the internet, as well as a good portion of the time in real life.

For me, I don't mind using my first name on the internet, however I wouldn't feel comfortable using my full name, as I think it would be giving away personal stuff I guess to complete strangers. I prefer using a username because I think it's more useful for others.

Haha, I know exactly how that is.

I use the SC2 forums all the time, and it is quite challenging.  I have to go in there with an entirely different mindset.  Sometimes I forget to turn off that mindset when I come in here.  That of blunt, cold, and hard truth.  It's truly the most effective way to silence them.

And then you have users like HeReTiC that just ruin everything by supporting the guy you are trying to shut up. -_-

As for the topic at hand, I don't ever put my real name anywhere.  Nor my birthdate, and, most certainly, my ZIP code. (dang photobucket...)

I'm not sure why I'm so paranoid about it.  It just doesn't seem like the smart move to put that stuff out there.

I think that the Google+ integration was one of the worse things to ever happen to YouTube. They completely changed the layout, they have pretty much bucked the sub boxes to the point of no return, the new uploads only filter and the recommendations section are the worst things, seriously.

I absolutely despise having my real name on the Internet anywhere. The Internet is a complicated tool, and displaying my real name puts me in serious risk of identity theft.

I don't trust anyone with my real name. I've made a sort of pen name though that I consistently use online (Jacob Faraday), but I would rather use a user name.

When youtube prompted me a while back with the decision to either use my real name or username, I was pretty ticked off. They made it sound like just because I didn't want to comment with my real name, I had to be a troll or have something to hide. Neither of these are true, I simply prefer to be known by a username rather than my alias.

I don't no that's a very bad idea.  I don't trust anyone with my real name unless i'm filling out a form  (like for online convention registration) or chatting with a friend on MSN.   I was also pretty ticked off when youtube started this.

First internet safety rule is to never give any part of your identity to anyone. I follow it out of common sense like everybody else should, but sadly...

How about we take it to a new level. What about real fotos?
