Well, you certainly would translate panzer with tank in the context we speak of. But the word tank as a name for a armoured fighting vehicle stems from a code name to confuse the axis in ww1 as far as i know. The british tried to mask their new vehicle with the name tank, as in, a tank for a liquid. So the axis would think they would just build boilers, or something like that, the name just stuck in the anglosphere i guess.

 

The Germans used the word tank too in the beginning, but then gave the new invention a german name, panzer, The german word for armour.
