Smilodon 18 February 1, 2013 Share February 1, 2013 (edited) What one do you prefer? Personally I much prefer Rainbow Factory. Cupcakes is alright, but it just seems like a bunch of gore. It disturbed me, I'll admit, but not much else. Rainbow Factory was more than just gore. For one thing, It had very subtle, serious, themes hidden into it; and I like stories that have real meaning to them. It was also in a way, psychologically chilling, not just plain out gore like Cupcakes. So what one do you like better? (Or none of them at all, I completely understand that as well.) Leafeon 2,702 February 1, 2013 Share February 1, 2013 Sorry. But there is no contest. Rainbow Factory is far superior. The characters stay true to canon (Before you say "In Rainbow Factory RD wasn't being loyal to her friends though!!!" She was conflicting being loyal to Scoots and loyal to her job.), and it is not gore for the sake of gore. Rainbow Factory is a great complex story. Cupcakes comes nowhere close to beating that. 2 Eeveelutions: @Vaporeon: N-Harmonia : Ampharos @Flareon: Descant/Bard @Espeon: Locked @Umbreon: Lhee @Leafeon: Firebolt @Glaceon: Mal @Sylveon: Don'tDropThatDedenne
Harmonic Revelations 8,836 February 1, 2013 Share February 1, 2013 None of those grimdark fan fictions can even dream of comparing with Super Pony Massacre Dead Space Ultra Xtreme. I couldn't sleep after reading that. D:
Scootalove 10,689 February 1, 2013 Share February 1, 2013 I say, Rainbow Factory. Cupcakes might have had a more gruesome story but, Rainbow factory was really stable with its story. Cupcakes was more of, a mix of Insanity and Desserts. Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules

Yukon 15 February 1, 2013 Share February 1, 2013 RF actually had a meaning too it, not just making ponies into Cupcakes. I really enjoyed Rainbow Factory. Cupcakes just was disturbing and wasn't really...you...know meaningful. It wasn't even creepy, unlike RF which kind of gave me the chills. RF is in my top 5 favourite Fanfictions ever, I actually have no idea why Cupcakes got to be so popular.
Pinkazoid 3,493 February 1, 2013 Share February 1, 2013 they're both shit, Cheerilee's Garden is better :V I'm not much into Grimdark, I didn't consider RF near as horrible as Cheerilee's Garden, which traumatized me for about two days xD 1 :
Betez 1,734 February 1, 2013 Share February 1, 2013 I honestly haven't seen/read either of them, and I plan on keeping it that way. I've heard descriptions of them, I just don't see the point, what is it? they just don't interest me. I voted that they were both horrible. 1 My OC Stay pony my friends"And ALWAYS remember...to never forget." - Someone who I'm sure has said this before I did
Callisto 1,877 February 1, 2013 Share February 1, 2013 Rainbow Factory, without a doubt. It actually has this thing, what's it called, oh yeah.. A PLOT. SUBTLETY. It's complex and interesting, unlike,,, CUPCAKES. Bleh. 3 Y'know, I've been on this site for almost ten years and I've never had a proper signature. Ain't that something? Discorded Bluenote 126 February 1, 2013 Share February 1, 2013 Even though I only read a bit into RF and didn't read Cupcakes (I felt sick after that) I say that RF is far superior because of how the characters stay true, it has complexity, and they didn't gross you out physically using gore. They did it mentally. Hooves down. Youtube~Twitch~Ask.Fm
Bardock 139 February 1, 2013 Share February 1, 2013 If I had to pick, I'd go with Rainbow Factory. It had an interesting story, and was much better written than Cupcakes. Although I enjoy Cheerilee's Garden and it's sequel much more than Cupcakes or Rainbow Factory. DR Leper Lupinstein 410 February 2, 2013 Share February 2, 2013 Cupcakes all the way. I'm sorry Rainbow Dash doesn't seem to be emotionally disturbed or wierd in any way. I look at Pinkie Pie who's random and unpredictable. she also has a bouncy personality, which could be a red flag for insanity hXc i ain't like you and i don't wantyour love and i don't need your respect!!!! hXc ^ - BLOOD FOR BLOOD/OUTLAW ANTHEMS
NavelColt 22,882 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 In the land of CD, all grimdark is ostracized as grotesque, no matter what was well-written or wasn't well-written. Having only read them through their popularity being infamous (and even then I only read Cupcakes as a comic, and saw it's animated Youtube video) I didn't enjoy either of them in the least. So, as far as 'which I prefer' goes, 'neither, they're both horrible'. Rainbow Factory actually had a plot to it and wasn't made as a troll fic, like what Cupcakes was, so yes, as far as basic writing elements go, it's 'better'. But with me there's really no care for distinction, when it comes to 'did I like it'. I will never like a grimdark fanfic like either of those, no matter how well-done they are :3
~Vallo~ 409 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 Meh, I voted "Niether", but if I had to choose, I'd say Rainbow Factory. Cupcakes was just mindless gore and was poorly written, but Rainbow Factory actually had some form of plot in there. Your breath stinks.
JeanHover 326 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 (edited) I haven't sat down and read Cupcakes, but I have for Rainbow Factory, and I must say that it was a pretty good story of first, a bit cute even, but near the end I wanted to barf. I seriously don't know how anyone could appreciate that whole story. Agent153 50 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 (edited) Well I have read both stories and like them, but if I had to choose it would have to be Rainbow Factory. Like everyone above me, I see Cupcakes as just gore and violence, and while Rainbow Factory has that it does have a plot and the characters were close to how the show portrays them. But the factor behind my choosing is this......what seems more sinister? Because honestly what is more scary, a lone psycho pony who wants to cut you up into cupcakes and wear your remains or the fact that if you fail a test you get swept off to be grinded into Rainbows and the ponies behind it just see you as nothing more then material? Personally the whole secret-murder of ponies is more creepy. Cause looking at Pinkie you can kinda see that they may happen. But this is just my opinion. Winged Anomaly 47 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 I *vastly* prefer Rainbow Factory. Cupcakes is, literally, just torture porn. Rainbow Factory has a good story, is much better written, and has genuinely heart-wrenching and emotional moments.Rainbow Factory is how grimdark should be done. Cupcakes is just gory.
Replicant 113 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 I haven't read either of them because of what everyone else is saying-- that they're poorly written. I definitely like the "Cupcakes" cosplays I've seen, though, so I'm going to arbitrarily choose Cupcakes. :3c The cosplays wouldn't exist without it. Admiral Colt 61 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 Cupcakes scared the crap out of me, but I loved the Rainbow Factory. It had a solid story, along with characters that were pretty much canon to their personalities, it was a tad chilling at first, but in a good way. It did what it was meant to do well, along with a pretty good story. 1 Do you have Xbox live and have Halo 4/Mass Effect 3? Do you want to be in a clan that plays those games? Castoro Chiaro 181 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 Alright, because of this thread I read through Cherilee's Garden and Rainbow Factory. I expect this forum to fund my therapy. Jokes aside...yeah, both Rainbow Factory and Cupcakes fell flat for me. If I HAD to say which one was more palatable, I guess I'd say Cupcakes. It's a good CONCEPT, just handled very poorly. And it makes me mad because I see so many Cupcakes spin-offs that get what made the story actually scary wrong; Pinkie acts so NORMAL in this, but everyone always depicts her as being so creepy and different that the scare factor is just gone. 1 -- I'm also of the opinion that deliberate lies and innuendos should never be allowed to go unopposed. speedyblupi 76 April 7, 2015 Share April 7, 2015 Rainbow factory is better than cupcakes, due to having a plot beyond "one pony tortures another pony to death" but Pegasus Device is better than RF because it has much more detail, is better written and clears up all the contradictions and unexplained events from it. The final chapter was a bit rushed and pointless though - the story is better if it ends at the endpoint of the previous chapter. If you want an MLP gore fanfic with a good story read Rainbow Factory and Pegasus Device (Pegasus Device is the better fic, but reading Rainbow Factory helps you understand it better), and if you want one with horrific and graphic torture that outdoes pretty much anything else read Cheerilee's Garden (It's more extreme, much better written, and a lot longer than cupcakes - I felt sick reading it, and I'm having a hard time finishing the first chapter). ...And if you want one with clop read "after that fateful night" by peppy greyskull. It's not particularly clop heavy, and it's very well written. The pain and fear aren't always as extreme as in Rainbow Factory or Cupcakes, but the story makes up for it and there's still enough blood and death to keep gore enthusiasts entertained. It's very long (longer than order of the phoenix), but you don't actually need to read all of it to get to the good bits - the chapters are generally divided by subject (gore, story and worldbuilding, romance, clop) and these come in different combinations in different chapters so it's not hard to avoid the ones of those that you're not interested in if you just check over the chapter to see what its subject is. Overdrive 5,366 April 7, 2015 Share April 7, 2015 Generally speaking, I do not like horror or gore one bit, however I have read both of these. Honestly, I don't think there is anything defining or unique about them. Nothing really stuck out. 2 "I'd rather trust and regret, than doubt and regret." Overlord0909 479 April 7, 2015 Share April 7, 2015 I used to be into creepypasta, but it messed me up mentaly, so I stay away from it now. But when I was into it, I liked Cupcakes... It was like a gateway creepypastafor me... *Shudder* Now though, I can look back, and see tat there's new errors to the story. Rainbow Dash IS important enough for one thing... And the setting is way too happy and nice for that sort of thing to occur... Anyways though, I understand some people like the twisted versions of things for a good scare (or read :l), but I don't.
