gaming Nostalgic games

For me, it would have to be The Legend of Zelda games, specifically Ocarina, Majora's, and the Wind Waker. I remember when I first rented Ocarina from Blockbuster as a kid and put it in (thinking I would hate it for some reason)... I became entrenched in what was probably the best N64 game ever, and the first game that I truly loved. Majora's and Wind Waker both sum up the inner Zelda lover in me. I think Skyward Sword will do the same when I finish it.

I think it's because the world was so large (at the time) and you could do all sorts of exploring within it. I like going places and seeing new things, and the Zelda games cater to that urge very well. I can't even explain what else, though satsifying combat, well composed music also probably plays a role.

(Other games of a similar nature do the same, like the Metroid Prime games and Okami too. I'm a real sucker for adventure.)

Well, in my case I have normal nostalgia for games like the first two generations of Pokemon, Animal Crossing GCN, etc., but then I have another level of nostalgia for games I played in late 2006/early 2007. Namely The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Actually, that nostalgia has died down just a bit, because... Well, I have to go into a bit of a long story here (no surprise with me, right? Everything's complicated in my case. lol). That time where I played it was what I consider to be the peak of my life. It wasn't really related to Twilight Princess, although I loved the game. It wasn't long after that (Fall of 2007) where my life flipped upside down. I'll just put it that way. You could say for the sake of the metaphor that I fell off the peak straight down toward an abyss I never thought I'd have to go down to.

So the time where I first played TP was what I consider the ending of my childhood... and hope for a normal future. The nostalgia I have for the game became on a completely different level from the ones before. I first replayed the game in 2009. I had literally lost it in between those two times, and got to play it again for the very first time. Replaying it was like stepping my mind into a time portal. All of the feelings of that time, including the endless hope I had back then, came back clearly into my memory. The effect was essentially sending me into a paralyzing depression and made me literally feel sick.

But eventually I played it enough and listened to the music enough that I numbed that nostalgia away. But there for a while I could instantly make myself depressed and sick just by turning on that game or listening to the music.

Regular nostalgia is fun, though. I'm glad I can still have it for things like Animal Crossing and Pokemon. I don't know why they don't have that same feeling, as they were before that point too, but I suppose I can't complain. I don't like that feeling. I don't like something I'm supposed to love causing so much pain.

Any Super Nintendo game for me is very nostalgic because back when it first came out, I was obsessed with that thing, even to the point where I still refused to put it away even half way into the PS2's life

While I know of similar expriences with music, I've never known of it with video games. With the medium, I usually just connect them to positive expriences, never negative, even in horrid times.

Then again, we all connect different experiences with different thing and aspects of our lives. Guess this is what makes us unique.

Does anybody else remember a time when amnesiac protagonists weren't cliché? I do. The Magic of Scheherazade was my favorite NES RPG, and was pretty innovative for its time. It had random, real-time battles with enemies that randomly appeared after screen transitions as well as more traditional, turn-based fights between the player's party and the enemy. The plot revolved around an amnesiac magician (again, that plot device hadn't become stale yet) and his quest to overthrow an evil wizard who was holding his fiance captive. You traveled across continents and through several time periods, making allies along the way to help you fight Sabaron's minions. At the end you discover a very interesting plot twist that I won't reveal here. The Magic of Scheherazade was a game of several firsts, and repacked some familiar RPG elements in a fresh way. Well worth anybody's time to give it a try. This game also has my favorite soundtrack from the NES. Every track makes you feel like you've embarked on a new and grand adventure.

Speaking of firsts and breathing new life into things, Baldur's Gate set new standards for the RPG genre with the depth of its plot, captivating soundtrack, its then-beautiful graphics; a non-linear gameplay style with tons of optional sidequests, and intriguing NPC interaction. Kevin Michael Richardson, the game's narrator, is fantastic at what he does, and his chapter introductions and narration of the protagonist's

sets the mood for the whole game. Even those who don't care for D&D can appreciate this game for the aforementioned reasons, and it revitalized and set new precedents for roleplaying games as a whole.

Mario Kart 64. When i was a kid every day i came home from school my cousins and I ate dinner and battled it out on hardest race tracks in the game. We did that every day until we got a PS2. So when i occasionally dust off the old N64 Mario Kart 64 is the first thing im gonna play :)

Super Mario RPG. Before I ever heard of Final Fantasy, this was my first RPG. Still one of my favorites, and I am hoping Nintendo releases it on the 3DS eShop one day.

Crash Bandicoot 2, 3 and team racing, spyro 2 and resident evil 3. I remember those games and how to complete them like a speedrun like a pro. I easily spent 4 years or more on those games.

Perfect Dark on the N64, because after beating the Single Player mode, I just want to have fun with the Combat Simulator, mainly the Pop the Cap match with PeaceSim, Speedsim, Vengesim, Kazesim, Turtlesim, and many other Special Simulants. I could never have fun without the Laptop gun and Farsight.

And this is where I'm going to sound old: Pong & Frogger for the Atari and Duck Hunt. I can't believe I was a little girl when the original Nintendo was released. Where did the time go?

For me it's the old gameboy mario games, and the first Super Smash Bros on Gamecube. I spent many many hours in my young childhood playing these games with my brother, dad and friends, especially for Super Smash Bros.

Rayman Revolution and 3. I played both when I was younger, the best game series ever. After Half-Life and IL-2 of course.

And the Need for Speed games, UG, UG2 and the original Most Wanted.
