Because you were most likely taking English Structure/Usage courses. The ones I would have to take are English Composition courses, where I'd have to write 20 page essays on extremely detailed subjects, and the professors nitpick at every grammar and style error you just so happen to look over.

i have no idea what course i am taking. it's called English B and i don't know what that course contains. i also have no idea how anyone could think writing 20 pages about a subject is beneficial in any way.

Not knowing what course you're currently in probably isn't a good thing.

 

The logic is that if you can write very precisely about a narrow subject, than you can write in detail on pretty much anything. Gets you ready for dissertations, and the like.

Exactly, "structuring." In the classes here, it's assumed you already know how to structure well, and they make you focus more on writing fluidly and in a profound, "educated" way.

 

It's a necessary evil for most. I'm glad I'm not going to have to endure them, though.
