I'm also wondering if I can have an animal companion. The description for the Beast Master said they have an animal friend that acts and attacks on command, so that'll be fun. I just can't pick what animal my animal companion should be.

That sounds pretty cool! I'd choose something you can take into cities as well as the wild, like a wolf or a tarrasque! That's it! I think a tarrasque would be great for you!

I have no idea about my alignment, it'll probably depend on some of the later choices I make for my character. Possibly a chaotic neutral, but that's easily going to be changed if it suits the personality my character eventually ends up with.

Well, a companion that's basically a giant invincible killing machine would be nice if my character was some bloodthisty person who just wants to watch the world burn. But that's not the kind of character I have in mind. While wolves are nowhere near as deadly, they have lots of utility out of killing. Like you said, they have a great sense of smell, they're loyal, they're agile and they can be taken into a city. Besides, they're probably deadly enough that I could order them to kill someone if I wanted to, as long as that someone doesn't have much combat experience.

 

That said, I'm not necessarily going to go with a wolf yet. Punicpunch can probably tell me a lot more about how that works, and once he does I may decide to switch to something different. By the way, a falcon sounds really nice too, so it's possible I may switch to that. I'm not really fond of bears though, so that's unlikely.
