Do you consider other projects outside of the show canon?

MLP:FIM has been going threw a lot of different expanses now a days. There is a comic book, a micro comic, chapter books, were even getting other stories from the back of toys.

So I was wondering if anyone considered the stuff happening in the other pony projects cannon or do you just consider stuff in the show cannon? An example, if a character is doing something new in the book or still doing something they have done in the show do you consider that cannon?

I mostly ask because, there is a lot of good stuff that happens in the comics and I think it adds a lot to the pony world. The comics also feel like just other stories that could happen in the show and the micro comic could be stuff that happens when one other story is going on in the show. We got a little story on the back of a toy and it was said to be an apartness of Celestia. The story is also looking at how Cadence became an alicorn. So I feel that that could be canon. Also this is not a spoiler from the book, but in it Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake can still use magic. So I would like this to be more common in the show.

this is a good question, they still have the Hasbro logo on it, so they must be "canon".

But the main storyline here is the one from the show, I would call these spin-offs or alternate stories but not canon, since the main storyline follows it's own flow. :)

Well I think that they could be. Like the new book that came out that tell the story about how Cadences became an Alicorn. I feel like it could be considered cannon. Or do u think I have this labeled wrong and not put have the show involved?

I think, so long as it's an official product, I count it as canon. The comic book writers even said that they want to keep to the show. The comic can go places the show can't, perhaps get a little darker, fill out stories in more detail. So far, the comic hasn't clashed with the show, and I don't think any of the books that are being released have so far either.

The whole concept of 'canon' is so weird to me, to be honest. I'm guessing it's because I'm a long-time Doctor Who fan, which ties canon in knots on a regular basis. There are episodes of that show that have to be non-canon in order to make any sense whatsoever.

So I'm bit more flexible, I guess.

Currently the show takes priority in my head-canon, with the extended universe and then fanon filling in the blanks. However the more official material is produced, after a certain point it's all going to even out. All just grist for the mill. Because at that point the show is going to contradict itself in a pretty major way that I'm not going to be able to ignore or interpret around. It will happen because the writers are naturally more worried about individual stories than world-building and have already ignored consistency when it was inconvenient (see Shining Armor, BBBF of Twilight never mentioned prior to the Canterlot Wedding), and Hasbro itself doesn't care beyond advertising the toys.

I feel like if it's anything made by Hasbro or the Hub relating to Mlp:FIM, it's canon. Otherwise, it's not; in other words it's fanon.

When you say comic and things like that, do you mean fan-made?

Well I can't speak for the toys, cards, or comics because I haven't ever read any of them but as far as "some" of the fanon stuff goes, I'd like to think of it as canon but definitely not all of it.

I don't consider it canon to the show I consider it canon to the franchise in general. Considering mlp started as a brand of toys it's not fair to make those canon to the show which was probably made origionally (as in g1) as an endorsment.

So yeah.

I like to think that some of the bigger, more realistic things like the comics, as well as specifically chosen fan fic ideas I've either read or made, could potentially be things that have happened canon-wise, but for the most part, fanon is fanon and canon is canon. Both enjoyable, but kept separate.

No not the fan-made comics and other stuff. I'm talking about the comic books that are made by IDW. The fan made stuff I don't consider cannon, because they are own personal ideas.

Good question

So far I consider the comics, books, etc. head cannon and not show cannon. What do I mean?

Well I consider what goes on in the other official material (has Hasbro's logo) to be head cannon which means I accept it as ideas outside the show

Show cannon in my books means relation to the show itself. While the other material has things from the show, the show itself has no indication of these events happening or have happened before.

So ya my strange logic behind that

Not sure, I guess so though. What's happening in the comics and that one book with Cadance's backstory seem pretty important for instance.

Nope, there is indeed an actual MLP: FiM comic. ;)

Until we get an official statement or the show contradicts with suplimentary material, I think its safe to say that all of that is canon.

In the first issue of the comic book, Rainbow Dash says that she drank so much of Pinkie Pie's "special punch" that she blacked out.  Yeah, Rainbow Dash got drunk at the wedding.  No word on if she had a wild night with Soarin.  *wink* *wink*

If it's officially licensed and labeled, I consider it to be cannon. I don't really concern myself too much with how cannonical something is, unless there's a conflict between two sources and I have to choose which version to go with. In that case, I would go with the show as the ultimate cannon, licensed products like the comics and books to be second place, and statements by executives, VAs and the like to be third place for reliability.

Well if it and it doesn´t  contradict the events of the show or the characters  I like to think of it as canon. But the IDW comics are something more like a "different dimension" or something like that. It just feels so different.

I personally like to think of the IDW comics as sort of "behind the scenes" of the show, in the sense that it shows things that are too dark or mature for the intended demographic; its obviously meant to appeal to the brony crowd with its more adult themes, pop culture references and all the rest.

That´s another way to see it. But I don´t say it because of the tone, more because of the references. There are some thinks that I feel wouldn´t fit in the world. Sill like the comics but i can´t help but feel that way.

I understand what you mean. A lot of the references sort of break the feel of the world of Equestria, but I look at those like I look at cameos like The Big Lebowski ponies or Doctor Whooves/Time Turner; cute but ultimately irrelevant.

Not exactly.

If they are fan-made projects that are just based on the show but, the fan-made project itself is basically involving characters of the show but not actually continuing the show series itself then I wouldn't call it canon. More like fanon. :P
