MLP characters who you thought were a different gender

While I had the (vague) idea that all of the main characters were female to begin with, the blue pony with the rainbow mane did not strike me as one at all. It may not have been such a vacuous thought in retrospect considering that many animated works I've watched had males with feminine voices. Perhaps it was just ignorance on my part believing that one gender was supposed to do certain things at the time, but the fast-flying and brash attitude coupled with her physical appearance that looked predominantly male swept me in that direction. It was not until a month into my tenure as a brony that I discovered that Rainbow Dash was indeed a girl -- simply with extreme tastes.

Similarly, I used to feel the same way about Buttercup from The Powerpuff Girls -- her short black hair, her green "shirt", coupled with her abrasive voice may confound young audiences. As the Faust coaching tree has it, however, this is what makes characterization intriguing and diversifies your series.

Well I thought rainbow dash was a guy when I first watched the show. Everyone that watches it with me always calls her a guy and I have to correct them. I don't really remember thinking that derpy was a male I always thought she was female because I made the fast connection between male and female appearances.

Only two characters

Angel and Owliwicious

Owliwicious confused me since I had no idea what gender that name was for. Plus the eylashes kids threw me off. Later learned it was a he

Angel was trickier since it could have been either way. Still today I get mixed up for som reason

I have to keep reminding myself that Rainbow Dash is a girl. She just comes across as masculine to me sometimes. Even Applejack seems very tomboy to me. The pets I can't really tell. I am so bad with cartoon genders though. I ALWAYS thought Peppermint Patty was a boy (Charlie Brown/Peanuts) but learned as an adult that wasn't true... blush.png

Yup, just like many others before me; I had a habit of mistaking Rainbow Dash for a guy when I first started watching. It was mostly owed to a user on another forum (prior to me watching) who had a Rainbow Dash avatar where her eyelashes weren't visible, and in that devilish grin that I would've never associated with a female character. I always imagined her to be the one male character in the show that everyone'd take a liking to. In fact, when I actually started watching it myself, I genuinely thought she was still a guy until Spike said "She's amazing!" which made me realise :3

It was a habit from then on out, but I've pretty much squashed it. She is no longer referred to as he by accident :)

There've been two other cases, none particularly massive; I imagined Angel to be a girl at first, and I imagined Derpy to be a guy at first (this was going by name alone when I hadn't seen what she looked like yet).

Rainbow Dash took me a looong time to figure she was a mare. For the first half of the first season I seriously thought there was some error when she was being referred to as 'she'.

I thought Philomena was a boy bird because she looked so ugly when Fluttershy took care of her. Like they didn't try to make her a girl bird.

I just realised this now :T
Didn't figure out Derpy until I was on the forums for a while as well.

Apparently Feld0's male as well. Only realised after watching this

Well let me be clear, When I was starting to watch the series i thought rainbow dash and appejack were male.

When I met derpy i thought she was male too

After that i realized they were not, but when i saw babs seed, man, her appearance and  her voice made me think she was, until TODAY

Owlowiscious. That is the only character I had confusion over a gender with.

"Owlowiscious' character design stands out from other males in the series for having pronounced eyelashes, while other males do not."

That is a quote from his wiki page, which I edited font-wise and such. I don't wanna sound bad or anything, but the eyelashes really did throw me off. And I dunno...He just feels like a feminine character to me. He also winked, which gave a higher thought of it to me.

I actually didn't think any of the characters were a different gender on first glance, which worries me a bit considering all of the things said in this thread.

I'm on the same thought as you. I don't want to sound mean, but I don't see why so many confused certain ponies as the incorrect gender. D:

Everyone says that they thought Rainbow was a colt, I actually disagree, her mane is long-ish, she speaks like a woman, and she has EYELASHES.

However, for a sec, I thought little Scoots was a dude. Somepony must've been drunk when they were designing Scootaloo's mane, then I found out that Scoots was a girl.

(But I'm still not sure, I don't care if she has eyelashes or not, Scootaloo is a boy in my mind)

I thought Twist was a boy... I also thought Scootaloo was a boy for a few episodes... actually it took me until Sleeplessness in Ponyville to realize she was a girl... derpy_emoticon1.png

I thought Scootaloo was a boy for the longest time, and it appears I'm not alone in this.  I was kinda excited that one of the CMC was male and was a little sad when I found out Scootaloo was female.  That sadness was brief though.  I still like Scoots, she's awesome img-1379355-5-xtWXQl1.png .

I honestly had no problems figuring out the genders of each pony thus far.It seems pretty straightforward by just facial structure alone.Even easier when you hear the voice and look to see if they have eyelashes or not.

However,it becomes a totally different ballgame when you start to include Philomena.I swear,it's like the animators wanted us to think Philomena was a dude...

When it comes to the ponies, the genders are pretty obvious to me (mares have eye lashes and tend to be smaller in stature). The pets however are a little harder to differentiate. Like many other people, I thought that Philomena was a boy at first and Angel seemed like a girl at first.

Gonna be honest here. I thought Derpy was male for a second...... Yea i'm stupid I know but I really did think that she was for a little while.

Hey, you're not alone there. Tabitha St. Germain thought she was a boy when she did Derpy's first voice in The Last Roundup.

Angel Bunny. Still not entirely sure. He / she is kind of a brat, though - and brattiness knows no gender.

Pretty sure Fluttershy has referred to Angel as a "he".

every so often i will screw up the gender of one of the fillies/colts because their designs are similar. However i cant think of any of the adult ponies who i thought were the opposite gender, mostly because you can instantly tell by looking at the head.
