AstralDrip 67 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 Is it the inevitable crossover between two very big fandoms, or is there something more to it that I'm missing? What other fandoms do you notice being popular with Bronies (besides MLP)? Would Homestuck be one of them?
XxSAINExX 29 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 (edited) I know quite a few anime fans that are also bronies. It is probably just because most groups that will be mentioned are by nature large fandoms. Acoustic Cloud 2,202 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 It's not so much the fandom, or that there is some link between the two shows that draws the two fan-types in. It's really just a good show. Some may like it just because they like to be apart of something big (fad followers). But I think most just generally liked the show for it's creativity. Rainboom Dash 1,056 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 Speaking as a fellow Brony-Whovian, the reason I like BOTH MLP and Doctor Who is because they're both great shows and I like them very much.
The Awesome One 1,315 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 I think its something to do with the Docter Who look a like who has often been seen on the show. I think hes like an easter egg for us bronies and his cutie mark further supports that idea. So when people saw this pony it made them try out Doctor Who and once they saw a few episodes, they were hooked.
Leafeon 2,702 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 Internet. Dr Who is big. Ponies are big. When two big things are accessible in the same place (internet), it generally gets similar fans, if not some of the same. It might be some other aspects, too, though. ^^ 5 Eeveelutions: @Vaporeon: N-Harmonia : Ampharos @Flareon: Descant/Bard @Espeon: Locked @Umbreon: Lhee @Leafeon: Firebolt @Glaceon: Mal @Sylveon: Don'tDropThatDedenne
Eureka 1,119 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 You have to admit Doctor Who is definately an awesome series. MLP:FIM and Doctor which are both good series, have members of both fandoms. It's sort of a coincidence. 1 Quote Eureka's words of wisdom has inspired me, I should start listening to her more. ~DX Silver
Kbblender 122 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 I KNOW! I KNOW! I've been noticing a lot on Omegle that every brony I meet also turns out to be a Whovian and a fan of Portal, and pretty much everything else I like. I'm absolutely certain it's because anybody who is a fan as something so awesome as the My Little Pony is most obviously an awesome person, and anybody as awesome as that will almost certainly be fans of anything and everything else that awesome, save for a FEW holes. Speaking as a fellow Brony-Whovian, the reason I like BOTH MLP and Doctor Who is because they're both great shows and I like them very much. I like to call them BROWHOVIANS. Really, it's in my Youtube username. BroWhovian TestSubject. I've got another reference in there, though. 2 "May the Force be ever in your favor, Mr. Potter" ~ Gandalf the Grey This is my OC with the unoriginal, therefore original name, John Smith
crazitaco 596 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 (edited) dunno. it could just be that doctor whooves happened to introduce alot of bronies to dr. who, and maybe vice versa to some degree. i personally haven't given that show enough time for me to form an opinion. i think i watched a little bit of one of the movies on a livestream, and i couldn't help but find the effects and general story really corny. not much of a corny sci-fi fan tbh. So when people saw this pony it made them try out Doctor Who and once they saw a few episodes, they were hooked. I think that could be part of it too. I've always wondered if that at least got Bronies to start talking about Dr. Who more. Then again, there's also The Big Lebowski and Jaws Easter eggs but they don't have the same kind of dedicated fans as TV shows like Dr. Who. dunno. it could just be that doctor whooves happened to introduce alot of bronies to dr. who, and maybe vice versa to some degree. i personally haven't given that show enough time for me to form an opinion. i think i watched a little bit of one of the movies on a livestream, and i couldn't help but find the effects and general story really corny. not much of a corny sci-fi fan tbh. I've only watched some of season 5 and 6 and walked in on someone watching some of the very first season. I've known some pretty dedicated fans, though, and from what I've heard, it really varies season to season. It's like Star Trek. I personally found the first season so bizarrely camp and dated that I didn't know if it was serious (also my first impression of Dr. Who). Oddly enough, I really love some Campy sci-fi. I love Red Dwarf and my all time favorite Star Trek episode is "Hollow Persuits" of TNG, which I really have no explanation at all for it. I'm also a big time MSTie. I'm really not a bandwagon person, though. These usually aren't things that get brought up, really.
~Starlight~ 764 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 Because people have good taste??? Well I am joking but a load of bronies found the fandom by looking on the internet, so they stumble upon things like fandoms often! 2 Hush hush, Starlights asleep, hush hush, through her telescope she weeps, hush, hush, as she hunts for mars, hush, hush, and head for stars! thegoodhen 698 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 There main concept is somewhat similar. Love and tolerance. Doctor despises weapons. Message of Doctor is that humanity is awesome. And that is also the message of ponies, although it's shown on other beings symbolically (Luna, Discord...)

I get the impression that all of those things share the same brand of witty humor. There's usually a reason for fandom crossovers like that. I don't doubt that its also becuse those are all legitimately good things, but I think there's maybe more to it than even that. Because people have good taste??? Well I am joking but a load of bronies found the fandom by looking on the internet, so they stumble upon things like fandoms often! Yeah, the Internet really has introduced people to new things and brought fans together. Actually, I'm starting to think that's pretty much what it is. I mean, bronies wouldn't really be a thing without the Internet. There would be MLP:FiM fans, but there wouldn't be such a developed community like this. I actually think this is the first time I've been involved with a fandom on the Internet, so sometimes I forget about that aspect of it.
Zerrodo 104 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 Maybe it's because us bronies know quality television programming when we see it? I started watching Doctor Who way before seeing MLP, as my Dad has been a fan since childhood and I usually watch it with him. The writing on both shows is great (most of the time) in their own ways, and contain clever humor as well.
Thunderchild 875 May 9, 2013 Share May 9, 2013 Man, I started watching Dr. Who when I was kid in England-Jon Pertwee was the Dr. when I got into it. That show used to scare the crap out of me. Still love it-the new version took a bit of getting used to tho. My fave was and still is Tom Baker-Really great character actor, did a great job with the Dr. for a long time. Maybe it's just a similar, fantasy based show. If you're into that kind of show, you're probably going to like Dr. Who and MLP. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one.
AstralDrip 67 May 9, 2013 Author Share May 9, 2013 I know they are both good shows with a following but so are Twin Peaks, Breaking Bad, and Arrested Development but i dont see them brought up as often with Bronies. I think it might be that they are both good fantastical shows that do a lot of world building and have witty humor. Also, the internet. However, i don't know a lot about Dr. Who firsthand, so I could be wrong.
Thunderchild 875 May 10, 2013 Share May 10, 2013 Twin Peaks I got into Twin Peaks for a while when it first came out-it seemed similar to The X Files. It just got progressively weirder, until it was basically unwatchable to me. Another great series was Millennium with Lance Henricksen. Done by Chris Carter of The X Files, super dark and moody. Check it out if you get the chance.
Zygen 6,066 May 10, 2013 Share May 10, 2013 I guess they're just both big and well it happens some people end up being brony's and whoovians. I'm not a Whoovian myself just saying, nothing against em though. Maybe Doctor whooves has to do with it to . Maybe whoovians see the easter egg of Doctor whooves and then decide to watch the show? idk. Maybe its just coincidence. Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! Fhaolan 4,483 May 10, 2013 Share May 10, 2013 You've got chocolate in my peanut butter! You've got peanut butter on my chocolate! I started watching Doctor Who back in the 70's in Canada, and still do. Jon Pertwee is 'my' doctor, but I do have a Tom Baker scarf in a closet somewhere. I can't say why there are so many crossover fans, but there are similar themes. Both are technically 'family' shows (read: children's TV), that inspire creativity and cross gender and age categories. And while the budgets might be low, the writing and the actor's passion for what they do make both the shows. Not just working for a living, but honestly believing they are making something worthwhile. Same goes for Star Trek, for that matter. I've run into a lot of Trekkie Bronies. And Trekkie Whoovians, for that matter. Having a lot of crossover fans is a good thing. Whoovians have been around for a *long* time (50 years!), and have been through a lot of crap during that time. Trekkies for 47 years, and even more fragrant crap. If Bronies are willing to listen, hang on, and take some advice from veteran fans, this fandom might have the same longevity.
Crystallize 279 May 10, 2013 Share May 10, 2013 I've also noticed a lot of bronies like the band The Offspring and the Bioshock series, which is weird because I liked them even before becoming a brony.
Thunderchild 875 May 11, 2013 Share May 11, 2013 Jon Pertwee is 'my' doctor, but I do have a Tom Baker scarf in a closet somewhere. Lol-that freaking scarf! The story went that the lady that was commissioned to knit it was sent a whole bunch of wool-far more than she needed, and just kept knitting till she ran out. Tom thought it was great, and it and the hat remain iconic to that period. Jon was the Dr. when I started, but wasn't around for long-saw him in the Giant Robot and the Claws Of Axos, that was about it. He's better known in England for Wurzel Gummidge-a show about a scarecrow who's in love with an Aunt Sally dressmaker's dummy, and who had interchangeable heads for different tasks. Believe me, it was better than it sounds. I drifted away from the show after Peter Davidson took over-he was always going to be Tristan from 'All Creatures Great And Small' to me. Guest May 11, 2013 Share May 11, 2013 Well both Doctor Who and MLP and very popular, so it's only natural that bronies and Dr Who fans would like both shows. You're not really missing anything, it's just simple probability.
