An interesting study

This....makes sense to me. My grammar, spelling, vocabulary and general historical, geographic and political knowledge sailed after the internet. I learn more on the internet in a month than in an entire year of school.

I wouldn't agree, but I have to say that... The internet in moderation can help one, not possibly increase their intelligence, but increase certain daily skills, that are necessary in order to look more intelligent.

I couldn't agreed more. I am writing much faster now (on the computer that is), my spelling is better and my vocabulary is actually much better (about 20%). But the question wasn't about how you have improved because of the internet but if we have heard or read about any funny studies.

its not so funny really. Its about that freeway air isn't good for mouses, the study itself isn't so funny. What I think is ridicules is WHY they did it. It was no explanation of it in the article. It must have been a myth or something(?)

i dunno. Lets look at my class. Everybody uses facebook, not everybody is smart. There are few who go into gaming sites and forums and what not, and they are not particulary smarter. One of them is, but not all of them.

There are 3 people I consider outstandingly inteligent in my class, me and two other guys. One of them is incredibly shy and lurks around the internet a lot. The other one is the most muscular guy i've ever met personally, and he spends most of his time doing bike tricks and is quite out going, im in the middle, leaning towards the shy internetzy side. So i really dont believe that study is real

It depends. I started playing MMOs when I was 10 or 11 and I knew people would look down on me because of by age so I quickly learnt to write in correct and mature way, of course in my native language, my English spelling, interpunction and grammar still suck. Anyway, I wanted to be at least a bit respected by the community, find my way into some nice guild and be liked, so I did my best and definitely became better at most things. Even before I paid attention to such things but a good friend of mine used to totally ignore ortography or all the salutation stuff and it was when she started using internet that she learnt to write properly.

I don't really recall any other interesting studies though. :(

I guess you read more while on the internet, interact with all kind of people, talk to interesting people, study up more on stuff etc etc,

the internet is an information hub after all.

but regular internet goers are on average more depressed and suicidal, lonely and lack rl social skills,

which can lead to less success in life.

Double-edge sword,

I guess it depends,

would you rather be happy or smart ? ~

I am lonely and i don't speak too much to RL friends, but still, it doesn't mean someone could have less success in life, just in some cases.

It takes the same amount of force to bite through your finger as it would to bite through a carrot. But if you try, your brain goes like "WHAT THE FUCK. DON'T BITE THROUGH THAT. THAT'S YOUR FINGER!" and so you don't bite it off.

But you know. This is one of those facts that I learned from the depths of the internet. It may or may not be true. Who wants to test it out? ;)

Kidding about that last bit...

If you use the internet the right way, then of course! I don't think I'd be smarter if I was limited to information about the outside world only through news papers and other similar media. They're generally just filling our heads with a lot of bullshit.

I don't think Facebook is what they're talking about, or any social media sites.

Probably more like forums and other discussion sites.

I think if you're on the internet all the time doing pointless crap like trolling, chatting and just doing time wasting games that wouldn't help your mind at all. If you're actively learning about something, researching, reading the news, having discussions etc I can see how that would help your mind. I like the internet for all of it's easy access to information and what's going on in the world and reaching out to other people from different places but I think that it can be a distraction from real life.

But I do think if you spend your real life time doing all the researching, reading books, discussing things face to face, going places, thinking etc, that could make you more intelligent too. And better rounded.

Found here.

"The Effect of Country Music on Suicide"

Country music is hypothesized to nurture a suicidal mood through its concerns with problems common in the suicidal population, such as marital discord, alcohol abuse, and alienation from work.

Yet another reason to hate country music.

I think thats true. I mean, after being capable of bitting through wood, why the hell couldnt I bit through skin, but still my brain stops me from it. The same way with your tounge, you can only hurt it when you dont realize you are

Internet let's everyone practice their inner professionalism. so to say. You don't wanna look dumb online right? Makes you try harder in the real world. Also gives you a more open mind with all the opinions flying everywhere and memes and stuff.

This...I find this statement amusing.

The internet made me less depressed and suicidal - finding people on the internet to connect with when I was suicidal pretty much stopped me tipping over the edge and jumping. If anything I've gained more social skills from the internet, by interacting with people from all walks of life, as well as improved my networking abilities, understanding of others' opinions, debating ability and many more other areas.

Personally, I find my vocabulary and spelling, even my grammar, is mainly down to reading a lot of good books. I don't find myself reading much on the internet, and I tend to drop grammar when I get lazy or tired. I know of a few people that have taken to facebook and seemingly lost their ability to speak English 'becuz dey end up talkn lyk dis'.

That actually took a lot of concentration to type...

Either way, I have lived on the internet for about...six years now (I was late to the internet scene as a kid). Since then I have made more RL friends than I originally had, which has both increased my self confidence and social skills, found my fiance on the internet and have made it to college, rather than throwing myself from the top of a sixty foot drop.

Happy or smart? I'll go with both.
