Yea so like, me and Moog argue over this sometimes. I prefer The Smiths, he prefers The Cure. I just thought it would be fair if we settled this as a poll. Which do you prefer, and no there is no "both" option.

Moog is 100% right. The Cure are superior. I would argue their musical talent surpasses that of The Smiths, and I also prefer their sound as well. The Smiths are okay, but I like The Cure enough to buy their music (though they need to stop it with these greatest hits albums).

Pfff, please. Morrisey is a way better singer and lyricist than Robert Smith. The Smiths will always be superior to The Cure. That's like a rule of life.

The Smiths lyrics:

Heifer whines could be human cries
closer comes the screaming knife
this beautiful creature must die
this beautiful creature must die
a death for no reason
and death for no reason is MURDER
and the flesh you so fancifully fry
is not succulent, tasty or nice

The Cure lyrics:

oh i miss the kiss of treachery the shameless
kiss of vanity the soft and the black and the
velvety up tight against the side of me and
mouth and eyes and heart all bleed and run in
thickening streams of greed as bit by bit it
starts the need to just let go my party piece

The Smiths are more anti-this and anti-that in their lyrics, while as The Cure focus more on descriptive pieces and poetic flows within their lyrics. Both are good lyricists though it takes a much more creative mind to come up with poetry than lyrics that are just going against something.

In terms of the way the songs sound, The Cure uses a lot more synth and "poppy" elements. Where as The Smiths are more accoustic sounding.

"Poppy" is the wrong word to use, I'd use Synth-pop to describe them, since there is a major difference between the two (try comparing Depeche Mode to Michael Jackson, yep nothing too similar there) and yes The Smiths have a more acoustic sound, so basically which sounds better is boiled down to opinion.

"Poppy" wasn't exactly the greatest word to use. I guess Synth-pop would be a better term. Not to mention the fact that The Smiths fall in the category of Indie Pop.

The Cure = Synth-Pop

The Smiths = Indie Pop

Sounds like that's reasonable enough to me, and like I said before which sounds better is one of the things that boils down to opinion.

Yes I agree, it just boils down to which band's sound you preffer. TMW you realize that you're the only person that's voted for The Smiths.sad.png

I love how this thread was meant to have some sort of purpose of settling things between you too. You're like elk fighting over some female with tooth, blood, and antler, even though you'll soon realize that that cute female elk has long since passed and gone off to some other better-looking guy.

Oh, Cure's better by the way.

I hate to be the grammar nazi here, guys, but you spelled Rise Against and The Red Hot Chili Peppers wrong.

*whispering*

Wait, that was intentional? Oh, uhm, in that case, I guess I'd go with The Cure.

I feel like this thread really does not need to exist, but then again I am also drunk right now. I well look at this tomorrow and regret it.

Sheesh I feel like a total hipster now...

*Sigh* Rise Against isn't even that good. They're okay but they're nothing special. I tried listenening to them, expecting them to be as good as Black Flag or Fugazi, but they weren't. Edited by AtDawnTheySquee

It's not hipster-ish to prefer one popular band over another popular band, it just means that you have an unpopular opinion.

Seeming towards how Dawn made this as some way to settle our arguments in our PMs, yeah it kind of is pointless.

Though I'm not that big of a fan of Rise Against anymore, I give them credit for introducing me into Hardcore Punk, they were a start for me and always will be.

That comparison doesn't even make any sense.

The Cure all day long for me.

Morrisey just bummed me out all the time-"Heaven knows I'm miserable now". Yeeeesh.

I saw The Cure-kind of, in Glastonbury in the mid '80s. I say kind of because they set up and played maybe 2 songs before it pissed down with rain and they had to stop.

'Standing on a beach' was kind of the soundtrack to my teenage years-so I may be a bit biased.

The Cure for me. I'm absolutely fine with The Smiths, but I really do love The Cure. Back in the day, they were also hugely influential to the Goth music scene, which I'm a big fan of, and they incorporate a variety of styles. The Smiths, on the other hand, were more Indie, which I'm "meh" on.

The cure just have so many fantastic songs, and nothing The Smiths have created really challenges them imo.
