How do you feel about Fans of the Fandom

Recommended Posts

Personally, I find them disgusting. The fandom is what led me in, I admit to that. But at least I care about the show, at least I'm actually a fan. Meanwhile a good chunk of the brony populace doesn't even watch the show. They just call themselves fans and then go proclaiming fan works to be better. Then stirring shit up because they think the actual show's inferior.

In my opinion, being a brony should be the easiest task in the world. All you have to do, the only thing that you need to do is watch the show for 22 minutes on a Saturday when there are new episodes. No more, no less. 22 minutes, is your schedule not free enough to spare a half hour? It's just one of those things that I find insulting, fans make this stuff out of respect (most of the time) for FiM and then you, who doesn't even watch or like the show, go and mooch off of our creations when in truth you shouldn't even be here. I'm not talking about non-bronies appreciating our artwork, I mean people who masquerade as bronies and make us all look bad by treating fanon as canon, complaining about how the show as a whole isn't mature enough, Because God forbid Family shows are for all ages right? and are generally just the kind of person i want to distance myself from.

I'm sorry if this comes off as some hate filled rant, but honestly it's just a serious pet peeve of mine. Anyone else? Opinions?

"Most of them"

Eh.

No.

If anything, maybe 15-30% don't watch the show.

How exactly is it "disgusting"? They like fanworks and such, what's so wrong about that? They appreciate the things the community does, how is that bad? It's not.

Erm in all honesty I didn't even know that people claimed to be a Brony without watching the show because that is essentially why we are called Bronies in the first place. If people don't watch the show but create/appreciate the fanart that comes our way and it is good I don't see why we should shun them.

I am no fan of the show, really, and I dislike most of the fan-made content. I do not call myself "brony."

However, I find myself knowing more about the show than an alleged "brony" that the OP describes. I would not call it "disgusting," but somewhat annoying, but it's hardly worthy of that term, either. If they are not directly bothering me, they can call themselves whatever they want.

It's not exactly disgusting... Kind of annoying, but no more so than people who do watch the show and then pull things like this: http://mlpforums.com/topic/60640-stop-the-cash-flow-send-a-message/

Overall, it's certainly petty and contemptible, but doesn't really do any harm.

Other bronies scare me sometimes, to be honest. Let's just say that there are some corners of the internet which I try to stay away from. O___o

Love your rant! Please do more. I really understand you and I agree with you 120% (20% makes everything cooler) I'm kind of ranter myself but I'm not as good. Keep ranting!

I am sure they exist but I really haven't run into fans like this and honestly could care less about them, fans are going to do what they are going to and there is nothing we can do to stop them and there is no point in dwelling on it.

There's not a single perfect person on this planet and quicker we learn that the quicker we can get some peace. People make mistakes, people say and do stupid shit, and unless they've crossed the moral event horizon into committing unspeakable and vile crimes against others, that doesn't make them bad people.

Everybody enjoys things in their own way, just leave them be the same you ask outsiders to leave us be.

Yeah, the 15-30% that don't watch the show. What did you think i was talking about?

I really don't think we're talking about the same group of people. I mean the type of "bronies" that exude all of this obnoxious love for something they have no affiliation with. It goes beyond just liking fanworks or appreciation, It's when you hold it in higher esteem than the source material. As if these fans that made it deserved to be worshiped just for making it, the same people that jump on the bandwagon just to feel important. Whether it be parody or genuine effort. now, the way I'm explaining it, of course it doesn't sound bad and I probably just sound conceited. You'd need to see it.

Exactly what you were talking about.

You said "Most of the bronies"

Implying most of the people in this fandom don't even watch the show, which is stupid to begin with.

and, I said "if anything"

Most likely it's not even 15%, much much less.

And still, normal fans of the show do that, mix canon with fanon, seriously, it's stupid to blame the ones who don't watch the show.

Oh, not all bronies are like that!

I mean, yeah. We always have those 'bronies' out there. But they take up a very small percentage of our fandom. This community is one of the best on the internet....loving, and very understanding and accepting. I love this community, and in a way, it makes watching the show more meaningful. I'm proud to be a brony, and everyone here supports each other.

And yeah. There's always going to be some icky parts of the fandom. All fandoms have these people. But sometimes you just gotta either ignore them, or deal with them. These people pop up in any fandom, and making a big deal won't really help anything in the long run.

But for the most part, bronies are very accepting, caring, and loving. biggrin.png I couldn't ask for a more supportive community. Sure, some fans can be noobs, but again, this is a very small portion. They just try to cause trouble, but honestly, their opinions shouldn't really matter to you anyways. Screw what they think. You have your own thoughts and opinions. You love the show, we love the show, it's all good. wink.png

I'd like to post again to point out that I've never met a brony like that, while I'm here.

Also, if you think having fannon is something only we do, you've obviously never been in a fandom before. Enjoying that is no different from enjoying expanded universe content of something.

I've seen a lot of bronies in the community make us look bad but, I don't worry about it. I only just have one reputation to keep, my own reputation. But, to me I don't think it matters to me. The thing is, I could care less.

I really have no problem with the fans or fandom other than its penchant to complain, but that goes on in all fandoms.

To be honest, I love the show but there are things that the fandom has created that appeal to me on a deeper level. That's not disparaging the original work and by no means does that make the fan works better but it means that some works hold more significance to me personally.

I still watch the show regularly from the episodes I've downloaded (yes downloaded because I can't get them any other way yet). And when new ones are around I watch them every Sunday (or whenever someone's nice enough to upload them).

I have to agree on some parts, there are some false bronies and I have run into them a couple of times. I don't find all of them disgusting or annoying, some of them do give us true bronies a bad reputation. But some true bronies also do bad things that give us all a bad name. Some bronies are so extreme that they will try to force a non-brony into joining the fandom. I would recommend them to watch the show but if hey decide not to I will leave them alone. Some bronies cant tell the difference between a non-brony and a hater.

people that jump on the bandwagon just to feel important.
Or MAYBE they just like it?

My friend doesn't watch the show as often as i do, i'm pretty sure she's only watched 4-5 episodes, and not liked it as much, but she sure as hell loves the fandom, she owns pony merchandise made by both Hasbro, and the fandom. I don't have a single problem with her calling herself a brony.

And i don't see how people like her make the fandom look bad.

The fandom itself is turning into shit all on it's own, thanks to the ones who don't watch the show AND who watch the show.

But why do you care so much about a reputation that's been bad since the begining? Just care about your own and you're better off.

I don't find anything wrong with them being amongst the fandom, I find it a little odd to call them bronies, but I suppose if they want to be refered that way its not a big deal really.

Nothings wrong with them though, better then the ones who hate us for no real reason.

There are so many people I would love to ask that question to, if more bronies would just take that attitude people wouldn't get so caught up on putting this fandom on a pedestal by expecting everyone to be perfect at all times and start bitching every time they find out that is not the case. It is too bad that is contradicted by your other statement about the fandom going to shit, I keep hearing people say that every time someone says something stupid and it just seems like it if keeps up could become a self fulfilling prophecy.

I think you are being a tad judging, yes. When a fandom is this big, this creative and this active, it's going to attract all sorts of people's attention, and hold it. People may not enjoy the light-hearted show, but they may enjoy the hard-ass fanfictions like Fallout Equestria, for one blind example. Another example is the fan music. Do you know how many positive comments there are on things like 'Discord' by Eurobeat, saying things along the lines of 'I don't watch this show, but christ, the things this fandom comes up with is incredible. I love this song.'

The fandom is so big and talented that you can get lost in it; you can live in it. So, not being a frequent watcher of the show and still enjoying the fruits that the fans create makes perfect sense.

Honestly, i see the fandom in a neutral state, this "fandom going to shit" is probably temporary, things change, so has the brony community. I still believe it has great potential, I love the fanworks and such, and i am well aware not everyone is bad, but the amount of people with the same close minded attitude of what makes the fandom good or bad, is upsetting. I don't think what i said was contradicting, since i'm admitting the fandom is not preferable, by me at leas. I still don't think it's enough for me to get upset over, since i do know there's still good people out there, who're simply voiced over by those loud and obnoxious ones.

  • 8 years later...

The 'hipster' bronies help contribute to the negative perception of bronies in our society. They make the fandom seem like a trend in outsiders eyes, which fuels the haters. I mean, if you are interested in bronies or becoming a brony yourself, at least watch a few episodes to see if it's something you're into. If you are not into the show, there's no reason to call yourself a brony.

Some fans probably weren't really fans at all, but that was way back when the brony fandom was popular and since then the "fake bronies" have declined significantly because I haven't seen any before.
