Honestly, brand name doesn't really matter, as long as the shoe fits you comfortably. I have no idea if there's one anywhere near where you live, but there's this great store near my house called The Running Company. (Now called BlueMile.) where you tell them your shoe size. They pick out a couple of shoes, and you take each out for a quick 100 meter jog and decide for yourself which is the best fit for you.

For me, the best shoes are probably ASICS, but that's only my personal preference. That might be the worst shoe for you.

I have some Inov-8 Roclite 295s for trail running/lightweight hiking, and they are great. They also offer a variety of shoes made for other surfaces.

Second having someone at a good running store help fit shoes, though. Not every brand works for or fits everyone.

I do a little bit of everything in terms of forward motion type exercise; hiking, running, walking. I have used Merrells for about 5 years now and I love them.

I'd definitely go for a pair of these. It might just be me being a big fan of Mirror's edge but I think these shoes are amazing. Sucks you have to buy special socks for them xD

I find my Saucony's to be pretty good, better than my Adidas I had previously. Though I wear them for everything....mountain biking, walking to the store..etc.

Then I got a pair of AC/DC Converses for road biking.

Personally, I've never been a big fan of shoes, I usually go barefoot but to run I have Vibram FiverFingers  http://www.rei.com/product/820688/vibram-fivefingers-kmd-sport-ls-multisport-shoes-womens

I love them but for people who don't normally wear toe shoes they use different muscles so they can be hard to get use to.

New Balance.

I use their shoes a lot. They're durable, made to last, and make you run really fast, plus, they're quite comfortable.

I personally go with Sketchers with memory foam. Very comfortable when your moving around a lot, which I often am in college. Could probably run on them for hours without needing to rest, though I'm no expert on the subject.
