Sexuality of the Mane 6?

Twilight: Bi-curious at the very least.

Rarity: Straight

Applejack: Straight

Pinkie: Pansexual

Fluttershy: Bisexual (prefers males)

Rainbow Dash: SUPER LESBIAN

Some headcannons going on for me, but I at least thought about it.

The only one that matters to me is this: Rainbow Dash is NOT lesbian.

Why you may ask? Because it would be massively stereotypical and that is one thing Lauren Faust purposefully worked against when making this series. Rainbow Dash being an athletic, tomboyish, often aggressive mare with rainbow mane and tail would be a stereotypical character if you made her homosexual.

Also, because of this: Rainbow Dash is G1 Firefly, but since Hasbro no longer had the rights to the character she took the G3 Rainbow Dash (a very girly pony that liked dresses) and put Firefly's personality into the character. So when Lauren Faust first made Rainbow Dash she was a pink mare with blue mane and tail, no rainbows at all.

@EquestrianScholar To be fair, pretty much every post in this thread is based on headcanon. And the "SUPER LESBIAN" in my post is kind of a joke anyway.

True enough, but I see fans deciding that Rainbow Dash is lesbian far to often. I do not believe I would be amiss by say more then half of the fandom sees her as such. Moreso for stereotypical reasons and her rainbow hair, in addition to people wanting a homosexual role model to identify with and feeling Rainbow Dash of all ponies fits the bill.

Also, I guessed 'Super Lesbian' was a joke though I also assumed it meant you to felt the same as many of the fans on the subject.

-------------------

Also, for all those fanfiction writers out there, I am fine with just about any ship involving the Mane Six. Whether they are with a stallion, a mare, each other, or another species, as long as the story is good and the ship makes sense/is explained (and it is not too Grimdark or filled with Drama, I prefer happy ships)... as long as Rainbow Dash is not labelled as lesbian.

I would go so far as to say leave out labels completely, don't bring attention to sexuality at all or make it a big deal. You want to ship Rainbow Dash with a mare, whether Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Fluttershy, Spitfire, Gilda, or another... do so without labeling her a certain sexuality.

That is my two cents.

That is one of the best approaches to shipfics and I for one am glad you brought it up.

You're welcome. I feel adding to much of our world into Equestria taints it, so real world sexuality issues are better just left behind.

---------------

That and I feel Equestria is a place where most ponies pick a special somepony based on who they are not what they are... pansexuality I believe fits that idea?

Sure there could be more traditional ponies and families that disapprove of homosexuality couples, that being something I would consider for Canterlot not Ponyville, but such issues would be far less severe given I see Equestria being a more positive place then our world.

Except for Aragy, everyone seems to be ignoring the numbers.  There are AT LEAST a dozen girls for every guy.  + Marriages seem to be monogamous. Lesbianism has to be fairly common.  As to how open or acceptable it is, hard to say.  Look at Victorian England, for instance.

Somebody mentioned Twilight having a crush on Princess C.  Complete misreading, I'm sure T regards PC as a mother or a mentor.  To think it is romantic, you would have to say Dumbledore & Harry Potter or Batman & Robin were homosexuals  (Of course, some people do, which is where the SNL Ambiguous Duo sketches come in)

According to most psych textbooks, a certain amount of experimenting during your teen years doesn't necessarily mean you are gay (IMO, it would be a hint, though)

Pegasi have a reflex that bronies, in their tactful, sensitive, PC way have named a "wing boner".  As part of their "fight or flight" reflexes, the wings come up when they are angry, startled, etc.  Bronies seem to feel this includes sexual arousal.  Pegasi can fake being interested (if they think fast).  Any post teen age guy can tell you, you can't fake not being interested, though.

Based on this, Dash just isn't interested in any of the other ponies.  She did have 1 when seeing Pinkie as a dance hall girl in Apploosa, but IMO this was just surprise.  Can't recall where, but I remember a scene where Fluttershy is in bed, talking to Dash & acting embarrassed until Dash points out she is being ridiculous.  No arousal on either side.

I do see Dash as an adventurous sort & likely to have done some experimenting.  Pinkie is the Energizer Bunny's evil twin gone berserk.  Any pony, male or female, who tries to go 1 on 1 with her is going to get their brains screwed out.  They are going to be reduced to a Disaster Area begging for disaster relief & Pinkie is going to be bouncing around "Let's do it again!"

The ones that we have evidence for are Twilight (unfortunately considering the subject of those interactions.  >_> ) and Rarity with her swooning, romantic aspirations. The others are a complete mystery as we have seen nothing that hints to romantic attraction with most of them.

If I were to hazard a guess though:

Rainbow Dash = Straight

Pinkie Pie = Bi

Applejack = Straight

Fluttershy = Asexual ("What was that noise?"   "The sound of my heart breaking.")

Fluttershy = Asexual

You're not the first to offer such an idea, and I find such a decision interesting.

The way I see it Fluttershy's shyness, insecurities, and uncertainty around other ponies would make expressing attraction towards another difficult... not because of asexuality but because of her personality being in conflict of ever showing or admitting an attraction.

You may stay with your choice but I find it more likely that Fluttershy is simply the one least likely to make the first move or show her attraction to one in a way noticable to the viewers.

Mine wasn't a hard and fast theory, just a guess. You could be right as your reasoning is perfectly valid.

Twilight: straight

Applejack: married to her work.

Rarity: lipstick lesbian

Fluttershy: lesbian and in love with Rainbow Dash

Rainbow Dash: Bi and in love with FlutterShy

Pinkie Pie is Pinkie Pie, whatever she is, I'm sure we don't have a word for it.

For Applejack it's not going to be a distant cousin or family member. Though it would have been funny if Rarity acting like a farm girl did joke about that concept just to get under Applejack's skin.

Rarity: lipstick lesbian

Despite the fact she has pursued two different stallions? The charmless and douchy Prince Bloodblood as well as the distracted and innocently rude Tenderhoof?

Rarity has only ever, and clearly so, shown attraction to stallions.

she wasn't after the stallions, she was after the title with the prince and the fame with the other.

the only real relationship's she has shown have been with mares.

sure that's not exactly proof of anything, it's just wishful thinking and I'm aloud to have it. :P

It's a valid point though. However, she isn't the type to lower her standards for any reason, and Rarity has VERY high standards. :-P

I made an OC! I'm always looking for feedback on her, please have a look and tell me what you think! ^^

Forgot to mention this in my previous post.  Some might take AJ's rejection of Trenderhoof as proof of Lesbianism.  IMO, it was just that Trenderhoof wasn't her type.  I'm not sure exactly what her type is, but I'd guess the rugged outdoor sort.  Lumberjack, cowpony, that sort of thing.

Love (as opposed to Lust) has to have an element of respect to it.  I'm sure, to AJ, that Trenderhoof is a wimp with everything she dislikes about Rarity & less besides (For instance, R at least works hard, but I doubt AJ even thinks T does any real work)

No, if she wasn't being polite so T wouldn't slam R for spite, I'm sure AJ's reaction would be on the lines of "Get me a flyswatter so I can kill this varmint".  But, IMO, this just indicates total contempt for T & doesn't indicate her underlying sexuality.

They all don't really care. They wanna be with a boy? Okay. A girl? Sure. Nobody? Alright. Everybody? ...ehhh that's stretching it, but if you can give me a good reason other than "they're horses. Horses have herds" I'd back you up.

Twilight and Rarity are definitely straight.

She could of just said she was lesbian to get Trenderhoof off her back if she was. So that part actually says she's either Bisexual or straight after all she is the Element of Honesty.

Rainbow Dash -- Straight

Fluttershy -- Lesbian

Pinkie Pie -- Pansexual

Twilight Sparkle -- Bi

Apple Jack -- Straight (or possibly asexual)

Rarity -- Straight

I have no idea why, but that's my thoughts on it. Both Rarity and Twilight have had a crush on a male, so it's cannon that they are attracted to them. I think Rainbow Dash is straight because being the stereotypical tomboy she is, she is most likely straight. Fluttershy, Pinkie and AJ, as well as Rainbow, have never really had any strong connections with males or females. I could see Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie most likely having an episode where they fall in love with somebody, but I can't see an episode having any content of a same sex relationship happening, as it's a kid show, and you know what some people are like with the subject... it would be awesome though, if they did. :fluttershy:

To be honest though, it's anybody's guess.

I see them all as straight. I don't understand why most people from the posts I skimmed over think Rainbow isn't straight. The only reason I see is because she is a tom boy, however I'm a tom boy and I'm straight. ._. Though for fluttershy I think she would be happy being the MLP version of nuns. And with Pinkie pie you honestly can never tell.

I think Applejack would be the type to have a traditional family and the writers would write her up that way... and since it's a kid's show this would be the path to take she would most likely be straight.

But of course somewhere out there in fanland, Applejack is starring in Brokeback Mountain ponified.
