gaming Discontinuation of the Wii

Sad times!

I remember looking everywhere to get consoles for weeks as they where sold out :)!

Makes sense for this to happen, I mean it's been out selling the Wii U and I guess they want people to buy the new console rather then sticking with the old one.

It allows for more ways to control the game? Yeah, "turn it sideways" or "swing it around". Faaaar more ways...

Playing a 2D side scrolling platformer like Kirby or Wario? Use a controller that's designed well. Like, say, a controller made by Sony or Microsoft, or Nintendo back before they sacrificed good design for gimmicky toys. Kirby worked just fine with an SNES controller.

If there was no need for more buttons, why did the nunchuck come with extra buttons? "Plug in the Nunchuck for..." - No. Those buttons and that stick should have already been on the controller. That's like giving me a mouse without a scroll wheel, then telling me to plug in some attachment that has a scroll wheel.

The sideways Wii remote was too small for human hands and generally shit from an ergonomic viewpoint and the dual controller style was redundant and superfluous. "Oh, let's have two controllers for what we could easily accomplish with one!" - Let's not, because that's stupid.

Oh c'mon you just said the same arguments again! P: Which I'll just reply to with the same argument. I believe that the dual controller does achieve something much more than the single one does.

Let's just let nintendo do their thing and come up with some crazy new idea for Microsoft to copy and Sony to perfect.

I'm pretty sure Sony just screw it up. Turning the motion controls into gimmicks, true gimmicks. I'm not a fan of Sony's analog sticks and the mushy D-pad either, mainly because I play games heavily reliant on quick movement.

Let's just hope the new touch controls on the newer controller is actually going to be used in a good way.

Had to happen sooner or later.  But I'm still pretty sad about this.  I still have my Wii, and I don't plan on buying a WiiU ever.  Why?  Because I'm having enough fun with my Wii!

But.......now this is.........really making me sad.......

I can't find it within myself to feel even the slightest bit sad. The Wii was easily Nintendo's most mediocre console (although the Wii U could be even worse than it, if it doesn't dig itself out of its hole fast), so I say good riddance.

If only we could actually say that... The Wii U isn't looking any better, TBH.

Not surprised since the system is completely abandoned and it'll turn 7 years old on November 19th.

It was a fun console though. Really enjoyed the Super Mario Galaxy games.

Love or hate the Wii, you can't deny it's impact on gaming.

I can't say that I'll miss it much. There were plenty of great games on it, I'm just not a very big fan of motion gaming and most of the games that were released for the Wii overused it. This made them difficult or impossible for me to play due to my disability, Skyward Sword being the worst offender. I know they were trying to innovate with the controls, but they could have at least put consideration into adding other control methods for gamers with lack of mobility. All that aside, I'm still happy that I got to enjoy great games such as Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Brawl, Animal Crossing and many others.

I loved some of the games on it, I just think it relied on the motion control gimmick a little too much.

Call me cold but I don't feel anything hearing this news. To be honest, I found the Wii to be pretty underwhelming. The only reason why mine isn't drowning in dust is because it plays Gamecube games, but even that isn't so special because I have a Gamecube anyway.  Since there were so few Wii games I really wanted to play, part of me regrets getting the console. I'm pretty certain I'm gonna skip the Wii U for most of the same reasons...

The PS2 lasted a crazy long time though. Wasn't it just discontinued this year? That's thirteen years. I'll eat my shoes (from beyond the grave if necessary) if the world ever sees a console with so long a life ever again.

The Atari 2600, if I'm getting my information correct, was produced from 1977 to 1992. Or at least the last game for it was released in 1992. That's 15 years on the production line, two years longer than the PS2.

Of course, I could be wrong. I'll be fact-checking later on.

It had an impact on gaming? It certainly had Microsoft and Sony copying its gimmick (and Microsoft continuing to insist that their version of said gimmick is ordained by the gods themselves) but that's not much of an impact...

If you couldn't feel anything, you'd feel no attachment to the Wii in the first place...Which means you wouldn't feel sad now, so I guess it works out. :P

It seems a few consoles are being discontinued and replaced by ones that no one has no interest in buying. Since this is how the Wii is going to go, at least I still have my XBOX. I find XBOX way more enjoyable. x3

It's still motion control.

360 has it. PS3 has it.  3DS has it. Vita has it. Wii U has it. PS4 has it. XBO has it.

Yeah, I'd say it made motion control support standard. That's an impact.

Wii isn't really a gaming console, it's more of an entertainment console. I know that sounds so weird since a gaming console is for entertainment, but there isn't really any kind of intense gameplay on the Wii. It's more built for younger and older audiences. The discontinuation of it certainly doesn't affect me; the discontinuation only affects those who want a Wii but have not purchased one, or somebody whose Wii breaks down. In either of those cases they'll just get the Wii U which, while not being very impressive as a sequel to the Wii, is still the same concept.

People may love to criticize the Wii but personally i found the Wii to be one of the best gaming consoles out there, it got people who never played much or any Video Games to give them a try (like my family for instance) It is home to some of the best games like Super Mario Galaxy 2, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Xenoblade and more.  The Virtual Console service allowed lots of classics to be playable on the same system.

To be honest i personally find this whole Hardcore vs Casual debate that erupted from this past gen to be ridiculous, it allows these "hardcore gamer" people to have a superiority complex against these so called "casual" gamers. Sorry but just because you play and know about more video games then someone else does not make you a better person. I understand different types of games are intended to be played by more experienced people (hardcore) and some desgined to be pick up and play(casual) but that doesn’t give you the right to label people for their choice of entertainment.

Every system has its faults and the Wii is no different but i am happy with its legacy. I enjoyed my time with it. And if the Wii had no impact for you that's cool, but don’t act like it didn’t have a impact for anyone else and the entire Video Game industry.

The Wii had a gimmicky, barely-utilized impact on gaming. Good for the Wii. Its own remote, and the copycat PS Move. That was the Wii's impact. The PS3, PS4, 3DS, and PS4 use Sixaxis controls which originated with the 3DS, not the Wii. And Microsoft's consoles use neither remote nor sixaxis.

Someday, Kinect technology may advance to the pinnacle seen in old sci-fi flicks, with every gesture imitated flawlessly in-game. On that hypothetical day, I'll be over here thanking the PS2. The Wii can keep its "Flail this stick around!" controls in the meantime.

No movie playback

Clunky Controls

Dude, it's a games console not an entertainment box. It's not meant to play movies. No movie playback = cheaper. Yum. If it did have that I'm sure it wouldn't have sold.

You're supposed to blame clunky controls on the game developers not the console. If the whole console had clunky controls then why is it on various critics' reviews that certain Wii games have extremely smooth controls?

I had no idea what shovelware is.

Yes, when that happens we will thank the PS2 for helping with the creation of tech that will be watching us all the time and robbing us of our privacy :P

Shovelware = Hastily made cash-grabs with little effort and quality, usually crap like Imagine, Petz, Chuckie Cheese's, Carnival Games, etc. The Wii was overflowing with these kind of games which is why it doesn't have a very good image among most gamers, despite a good-sized library strong games

Also who complains about the lack of DVD playback anymore? At that point everyone should have already some sort of a DVD player before the Wii, besides the Wii has Hulu/Netflix

The PS2 didn't help create the government...

Nintendo platforms in general are magnets for shovelware. Took me ages to buy a 3DS because all I ever saw on the DS line was garbage. And then they wonder why sales suffer...Atari was a big fan of letting low-quality dreck out on their platforms too, and they crashed the whole industry into the floor.

Nintendo's sales suffers? I wonder where you were when the Wii/DS/3DS selling gangbusters(and in the 3DS's case, it still is).  Sure, the Wii U fell flat on it's face after launch, but after a 685% increase in Europe, and over 200% in the US, the Wii U will likely start to pick up come next year

What's that? A Zelda game made sales increase? Well, I'm shocked.

It's almost as if Nintendo depends entirely too much on beating one or two franchises to death even to the point that they make HD versions of games that don't even need the update (Hi, Wind Waker! Yeah, you didn't age that damn badly.)...But naaah, that'd be crazy. *casual glance aside to endless stream of Super Mario Bros. rehashes and Zelda games*

Because it's not like they don't have a bunch of other games coming out or already released released that blind haters don't actively ignore despite constantly whining about how Nintendo never making new IPs or existing franchises, or just people who keep asking for more enticing games, right?

*looks at Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3,  X, SMxFE, and DKCR: Tropical Freeze*

Now I'm confused. You say "enticing games" then proceed to list...Another Donkey Kong, a random crossover title, Pikmin (as if "Send these little guys to do everything for you" didn't get old already)...Yeah, so enticing I can't stand it.

Granted, X might be fun but previews I've seen are mostly just a mech floating around and shooting at thin air. Pretty dull advertisement, not so enticing.

Wonderful 101 was enticing enough to make me borrow a Wii U but that's about it. The Wii U will thrive on the usual Mario and Zelda fare, mascot brawlers, and some crossovers because every Nintendo console thrives on that stuff for better or worse. But so far, the only legitimately enticing thing is that Platinum Games is tossing exclusives at the system.

I wouldn't knock Donkey Kong yet. Before DKC:R, the series was pretty dormant save for a few shoddy spin-offs, it wasn't until Retro gave the series some much needed life. And considering Retro has pretty much had a flawless track-record so far, Tropic Freeze looks like it'll do great.

"Random Crossover" - And so was Kingdom Hearts, and look how that turned out. Considering how much of a high regard both Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem, I think this one will turn out just as well

And finally, I've probably said this like 3 times here, how in Christ's name is any sane person tired of Pikmin? Legit question, it's been nearly a decade since the last game came out

It happens to every console so I'm not too saddened. If for whatever reason you can't find a Wii in stores in the far future just pick up a Wiiu and then you have both consoles (Wii and Wiiu) lol I love the Wii it was my first "next" gen system I got and it had a ton of awesome games for it. I have about 50 Wii games for the system right now. I used to bring it people's houses and have an absolute blast. Now it's time for the Wiiu to shine. The games coming out in 2014 for Wiiu are looking really great. My first two pick-ups for next year will be Mario Kart 8 and Watch Dogs for Wiiu. :)
