Nothing new here.

I'm going to call this thread dead. I have lost the last of my drive, and I don't see myself making use of it. If I do end up doing anything, drawings can have their own threads, but it seems pointless to bother with this one.

Hey everyone. I decided that instead of starting a new thread whenever I want to show off a drawing, I will just put everything here. I am not an artist, and have virtually no experience drawing, which begs the question: why on earth am I starting a thread to show this stuff? I am new to this sort of thing, so I am looking for feedback. Please try to be specific, although general opinions are also good.

Before we begin, I do not have a scanner, so all I can show is pictures, not nice scanned copies. And yes, only using pencil is just how I roll.

Fluttershy: Best Pony, my first attempt at a pony drawing

Lyra Sings, I didn't take much time, it was more about the dark humour than the quality

Chrysalis, nothing fancy, just getting basic features before trying different poses.

A convenient place to hide requests.

Thank you. I have never been an artist, I only started drawing recently. I can only draw one pose, and I can't draw without a reference picture. My current goal is to make at least one drawing a day, unless my schedule gets too hectic. I will probably only update the thread once or twice a week.

Ghost Pony, holy crud, pencil drawings getting smudged up can actually be a good thing. Believe it or not, I used Pinkie Pie as the reference on this one.

Fluttershy Heart, my first attempt at a heart pony.

Scottish Fluttershy, long story short, I should not listen to awesome bagpipe music when drawing.

Hey everybody, it's the next installment of "Frith is Magik makes really bad black and white drawings".

Discord. This turned out nothing like I wanted it to, drawing Discord is above my level. I'm showing it anyway because specific tips are better than just knowing it sucks.

Simple Pentacle. I didn't have time to do a drawing because I got called in for an extra shift, so I tried vectoring a drawing I did a few months back. It isn't pony related, but I need to learn how to vector eventually

Nightmare Moon Eclipse. I wanted to do something simple and play around with intentional smudging a bit.

Sleeping Rainbow Dash. I was playing around with textures and colours on this one (I don't know how well it shows up). I'm not too happy with it, but it is one of my better ones.

I know what you're all thinking. "Why does this bleeding idiot post these drawings, does he not know they suck?" Yes, I know. I am trying to do a drawing a day to practice and posting everything in order to get feedback on my overall ability, not a small portion.

Next order of business, I am not creative, I need ideas. If there is something simple you want to see here, tell me. This isn't a request thread; I will only attempt drawings I feel I can do reasonably well, meaning I will ignore anything that seems too complex for me. I need practice, and I need ideas to do that.

I read that last paragraph, yeahh, but I was already about to tell you what I wanted to see :D

...and when I say that, I mean more Rarity, naturally.biggrin.png

Come on, you know she needs more love.

Or, you know what? I just had a really funny idea for one, and I don't think this qualifies as R34.

You could do like, they're all sitting on a couch watching a movie, and Spike has the popcorn in his lap, and Rarity could be like, jerking her hoof out of the popcorn, flustered and upset at Spike.

Naturally, they'd be sitting by each other.

It'd be like, the hole in the bottom of the bag popcorn trick, but it wouldn't show anything but Rarity's flip out reaction.

That'd be funny, I guess :D

Yeahh. I think I made that sound way more complex than it was.

It'd just be them, sitting on a couch, watching a movie, Rarity pulling her hoof out of the popcorn being all like "SPIKE!?!?!"

Then again, not a request, just an idea :D

Oh, and as for the other drawing, no criticisms. None needed.

@@ghostfacekiller39, I like the idea. I have a general plan, so all I need to do is practice drawing Spike and Rarity.

Rarity, first try. To all Rarity fans, I apologize. This did not turn out how I wanted

Ignore the stick drawings on the side, I was playing with concepts

Spike, first try. Yeah, fail. I definitely need practice

Rarity, practice. Some improvement. I did some rough expressions on the side, somehow the bottom ended up looking stoned.

Spike, more practice. Same story as the Rarity drawings.

I may do some more practice before trying to draw what was suggested. If anyone has any tips for improving or criticisms, I welcome the help.

I'm roughly halfway done drawing ghostfacekiller39's suggestion. I'm working on it separately from my practice drawing quota, so it's difficult to find time. I'm also playing around with a slightly different style for it, so here's hoping it turns out. Let us begin with the next round of practice.

Warpony. I didn't follow any reference for the armour, I just felt like drawing something along these lines and went for it.

Pinkie Todd. I encountered a picture of Pinkamena while listening to the Sweeney Todd soundtrack, and this was the result. It is also my first attempt at a background, which turned out better than expected.

Mrs. Lovett. It felt appropriate to draw this immediately after Pinkie Todd. Sadly, I didn't have much time to put into it. I need to learn to draw clothes.

Pirelli. Still on the Sweeney Todd track. More practice with backgrounds and depth. It ended up pretty bad, but that's the only way to learn.

I'm still pretty bad at this, but considering I started drawing 2 weeks ago, it could be worse. Ponies are a good place to start because they are can be simple. Thank you for taking the time to check these out, any tips or suggestions would be welcome. Until next time.

Frith your stuff is super fun and comming along very nicly but you need to use non lined paper. Please. It's a shame to put all that energy into good work and have wide ruled notebooks ruin things.

As far as drawing advice goes you might think about shortening their necks. You have a good concept of the pony form though. To advance your work peruse this equestrian daily link. It's super useful and I go back and reference it every once in a while too.

http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/01/pony-drawing-guides.html

The trick to drawing the dynamic poses some ponies have is to build up from a gesture skeleton and basic shapes and then basically connect the dots. Given what you have drawn so far I suspect that this will not be a hard challenge for you and that you will rocket on up that learning curve.

Keep having fun, cause it sure looks like fun :)

I checked out the link. Gods, it is amazing, thank you. So far I've been working with only a basic understanding of proportions. If I can figure out specific proportions and various angles, drawing will be much easier.

Now I just need to quit being a cheapskate and buy a real sketchbook...

When I start my ponies I just draw a bean for the body first then a circle on top of one of the sides that is about half the size of the bean. After that you can just add stick figure legs to get that part right. The legs are usually just a little shorter than the body and the head to body length is just smaller than the length of the body (or roughly the same. See super special sketch tutorial. Unfortunately it keeps uploading it upside down...

@@ghostfacekiller39, It is done. It could be much better, but I do think it is one of my finer pieces. I was playing around with a different style of shading. It isn't terrible, but I don't think I will use it ever again, it was a royal pain. It isn't exactly what you suggested, I added a twist, but I hope you are satisfied.

Without further ado

Ya Frith! Solid paper! Nice job! Also keep drawing those hard angles, never let what you think you can draw dictate what you actually draw.

I went back to fundamentals for a little bit. Sorry Robin Hoof, it's lined paper, but I don't think it really matters for this.

Nothing of merit, just working out some numbers.

Good news (at least I think it is), I bought a sketch book, so my drawings won't be lined anymore, at least not all of them.

Fluttershy. My first drawing in the new book, plus I applied some of the math I've been working out. I added a bit of her house to fill space.

Hey everyone, time for another update.

Relaxed Fluttershy. It is far from perfect, and there is no background, but I'm happy with the overall effect.

Octavia and Vinyl Scratch, Don't Leave. I failed with the rain and the puddles, and Vinyl's eyes, and the background, but I like the idea.

Derpy to the Rescue. No planning at all, I just got some basic dimensions and arted on the page.

Luna Heart. On a time limit, keeping it simple. I messed up quite a bit, but it's identifiable.

I am hating this new sketch book. It smudges when I don't want it to, doesn't smudge when I want to smudge, and lines are a pain to erase. A waste of money. I intend to finish off the book and go back to printer paper (it worked good when I was drawing ghostacekiller39's suggestion). I haven't had much time this week (darn university), but I'm trying to keep up my quota.

Thank you for taking the time to peruse my drawings. As always I welcome ratings, criticism, tips, and ideas. See you all next time.

Your stuff is definitly getting better. Keep up the good work. Might want to make the heads a little smaller and the Pegasus wings a little bigger. Definitely some of your best though.

Sorry to hear about the paper. Sometimes you just need to find what works for you. Keep em comming. I am envious of your volume of work produced.

I am envious of your volume of work produced.

I have a quota of one drawing a day. I started drawing recently (a couple days before I started this thread), so I need to catch up to most other artists in terms of practice. On the bright side I get plenty of practice, on the down side, I don't always have time to do them well and I run out of ideas quickly. Either way, thank you for the compliment and the advice.

I can't believe I'm due for an update already. How time flies.

Sleeping Princesses. inspired by the Luna heart I drew last time, I drew both of the sisters combined with the Yin Yang concept, and added in a pentagram.

This drawing is inspired by the S4 premiere. Spoilered in case you haven't seen it for some reason

Sonic Friendboom. Twi can fly!

I didn't have time to draw, so here is a Celtic knot I did a few months ago. Math makes better art than art does.

Dangerous Mission Outfit. I finally worked up the confidence to do this. I didn't have an eraser, and drawing without my best friend just isn't the same, but I am still happy with it.

As always, comments, critiques, and advice are more than welcome. With finals approaching I may not be able to maintain my quota, but I will still try to keep practicing and sharing. See you all next time.

One more request: I appreciate the encouragement I have been getting, but I would also appreciate criticisms. I am trying to improve, so I would like to know more about things I may be doings wrong and how to fix my mistakes. I am grateful for the support, but I would like harsher criticisms of my work. Thank you all.

Hey everyone. I haven't had time to draw lately which makes me sad. I've had three major assignments, plus finals are coming up, so drawing time is scarce. Normally if I don't have a new drawing I just share a random photo, but I am running out of those. Here is what I have for now:

Pinkamena. I did this mostly on the bus. No reference, no resources, just a pencil, piece of paper and an idea. Not my finest work, but not terrible.

Mustache Party. I wanted to draw, but didn't have any good ideas.

Applejack. Up until now she is the only member of the Mane 6 I haven't drawn.

I didn't have time to draw, so here is a picture of a bolt statue I made a few years ago when I was doing welding in school.

I have been trying to do updates every four days and have something to show for every day, but time is becoming an issue. I hate to give up on my quota so soon, but until the term is over, I may be cutting back.

As mentioned in my last post I would appreciate further critiques on my work. Thank you all for your time, see you on the next update.

Considering you've not been drawing for long, these are great. My only real concern is with the legs - they seem too skinny. Bulk 'em up, just a bit. Can't wait to see more!

Thank you for the advice. I spent a good chunk of of time working out a proportion guide which I never use. I'll make sure to focus more on the legs.

Hey everyone, I'm back. This week I have both my worst work and some of my best to show you.

Let's start with the bad.

Luna. I tried this a few times, but I could not get it. I know this isn't good, but it's actually my best attempt.

If anyone has a really good alicorn guide, I could use the help. Thank you

Now For the stuff I am satisfied with,

Orion Skies. When I read the character profile, I knew exactly what I wanted to draw. I originally planned some insane steampunk wings, but in the end I couldn't do it and settled for these.

Thank you to Dsanders for volunteering his OC

Fortune Flair. Once again, I found a point in the character's profile and drew it. The costume didn't turn out as well as I hoped, and the second pony (made up on the spot, BTW) was rushed. Either way, it was fun to draw.

Thank you to ShadOBabe for volunteering her OC

Finally, an experiment with a different style,

Hybrid Derpy. I decided to play around with a different style. Derpy was my test subject partly because the last drawing I did of her was no good. I think it is cute, and I want to play around with it a bit more.

I would like to give some credit to PrincessOfWub. This spawned the idea, and I stole the ears.

Feedback, criticisms, and advice are welcome. I am willing to try out simple ideas and styles, so if you want me to try something, I might, depending on my confidence and the idea itself. Once again, I need a good Alicorn guide, the one I have did not help. Thank you all for taking the time to check this out.

Things are looking good. The legs are getting better but they still need to be thickened a little. As for alicorns, don't think bou them as alicorns, just draw them like an earth pony and then add the horn and wings.

FYI your prolific drawing insipid me to do my own Luna and celestia heart drawings so thanks.

Well then, that changes the game. Alicorns have different proportions, and I even found a basic reference, but pony-ratio alicorns could be cute. Certainly not regal, but cute. I assume you refer to the drawing of Luna and Celestia with the pentagram. I got a laugh out if those videos about Pagan symbols in MLP, so I decided to do an actual Pagan take on the two sisters. The art is sub-par, but I'm glad it gave you an idea.

Hey there, sorry I'm late, I've been pretty busy lately. Well, Here's the latest update.

Elficorn. I wanted to practice drawing alicorns, but out of the blue I got the idea for an elficorn. Celestia was the reference for the dimensions, LOTR was the reference for the necklace.

Apple Bloom's Cutie mark. Not my most refined work, but like Lyra Sings, it was more about the idea.

Fluttershy Heart. I practiced using inkscape by vectoring the Fluttershy heart drawing from a while back. The quality does not justify the time that went into it.

I look forward to hearing everybody's opinions. I know these aren't my finest, but all the same, a wide range of feedback is useful. If there is anything you want to see me try, I welcome the challenge. Thank you for your time, see you all next time.

Note: I am only showing three this time. The fourth is a birthday drawing done for sadistic ghostfk39, so he can post it if he wishes.
