Nik's going to cheat via this loophole. Dusk never said that it was a 1v1 battle. Nik is going to train Substitute so the copies can attack. They'll still be weaker defense wise, but they'll attack with just as much ferocity as Nik

Since Substitute drains part of the user's health each time its used, wouldn't trying to make enough of them to swarm an opponent really, really hurt the user?

I'm contemplating having Rune give up on Psyshock for Night Slash. Teach him a dark move for type coverage and because Psyshock is kind of shit. At least for Gallade because Gallade is a physical attacker rather than a special one. If he went to Gardevoir, it'd be a different story, but nope.

@,

Nik is going to create two every day, then rest up and create some more the next day. It's a pretty simple way to avoid the power drain for the actual battle, increase his training gains, and create teammates

But Substitutes had no brains, I thought. It's like substitution jutsu from Natuto.

That's good...I suppose. :/ As if regular pokemon battles weren't exciting enough. I just role-play pokemon battles for putting on a show so it benefits the person reading it, it's great for Role-Play improv.

So, I was thinking about it...  Would Nik's strategy even be allowed?  I mean, if you think of the rules around a challenge, I imagine it's like a legit pokemon battle.  I don't think it would be far fetched (heh, farfetch'd) to say that "No pre-buffing" would be one of the rules involved...  And stockpiling Substitutes in advance would be a pretty big pre-buff...

There have never been many rules in the Anime and Manga, we get stuff like Misty's gym being built in such a way that a Torterra or the like could never fight there, the Anime and Manga Pokemon battles are not fair at all and doing weird stuff is encouraged

@,

So far from what I've seen from Dusk and Zach's battle against Rune and Synthia.

We were going mostly by Game Rule statuses plus some improvised action in between the actual rules to have it read entertainingly.

Maybe, but this is an Academy meant to encourage fair and even battles.  It makes sense that in the anime the gym would be designed around the gym leader's type to give the challenger an extra hurdle, but in this scenario both parties are meant to be on an even playing field.  I'm just saying, Darius likely won't approve of something like that...  Using them in-battle he wouldn't have a problem with, but stockpiling them beforehand he most likely won't allow.

Otherwise we could use a scenario of something like a scizor gijinka using three swords dances before each fight, and then knocking out his opponent 2 seconds into the fight with a single bullet punch.

It is totally legit, it's called pre battle planning. If you're facing an opponent who has pre-buffed, you should have done the same yourself. Not to mention that Nik is a lower level than Dusk, he's already at a disadvantage

Well, considering Rune doesn't have any buffing moves that don't require him to punch someone in the nuts, yeah... Zach could have pre-buffed though.

@@Ampharos,

Nik is a shameless cheater, schemer, and coward. I just realized, Darius didn't call off any of Nik's buffs.

Oh, and you tempted fate with Castform :fiery:

Just saying, Darius isn't going to approve of it for an official match.  Sparring is one thing - a sparring match is training.  An official challenge is meant to be more like a test - comparing the fruits of one person's training against the others.

As such, he isn't going to allow buffing before the match...  Buffing during the match would be fine, but doing it beforehand isn't going to show personal progress as far as he's concerned.  If he sees any of it he's going to call the match forfeit automatically.
