I am worried...

Hey everypony, I have a bit of a problem... My friend has invited me to go round to his house, and we know each other fairly well, he knows I am a brony, and he approves of it, the problem is though, his family don't, they have seen my skype username (which I put as 'fluttershy'), apparently, they asked who I was (not knowing me), and my friend told them who I was and that I watched MLP, according to him, they sighed and they thought I was an idiot..... Well, if I do go round, and they do comment on me being a brony, I don't know what to reply! If I don't reply I assume they will think I am rude. I could just give them the valid reasons, but I am almost certain they will then comment beyond that. Does anypony have any idea on what I could say?

I doubt they'll say something to you about it, it's not like you're THEIR kid. If they ask, just say it's a popular thing on the internet.

I agree with Laydee

Well, the thing is, I have heard quite a lot of feedback from him about other things they have said, and, to be quite frank, they are not nice.

If they have any manners, they won't mention it. However if they do give you a hard time, I suggest you bring a banana bag and a moon cannon.

(I will never stop using that bit as a reference :D)

It would depend on what they ultimately say. Obviously you cannot---and should not---pick a fight with his family if they tease you for being a Brony. Self-deprecating humor can help in order to ease tension, though you might simply want to be plainspoken about your affinity for MLP. You need not tell them your favorite episode or pony, but you can be frank about why you are fond should they choose to ask. It is sensitive to the context of their comments/inquiries.

Ultimately, I don't think they will say very much since they would probably prefer not to speak poorly of you face-to-face. If you are being verbally abused for some reason, obviously you shouldn't hang around and absorb the abuse. In that case, tell your friend you have to leave and later explain your motives for doing so.

I doubt it will be a problem, though.

Just try to avoid the topic, prove that their judgements are unfounded. Just be friendly with them and I'm sure they'll see beyond what you watch, don't worry about it!

Simple keep your lips zipped and you'll be okay, saying nothing about your bronyhood to people unfamiliar with it works all the time.

I, myself will be quiet, but I am worried if they bring the topic up >.<

Well just say, are those rumors true? Trick them into thinking your proving them wrong.

Whatever you do I wouldn't lie to them about it, if you act ashamed about watching the show it will make them think it is something to be ashamed of. If they ask (which they really shouldn't considering you are a guest) then tell them straightforward yes, don't reinforce their opinions that it is something bad.

If they don't ask just act normally, if they want to be jerks let them.

In the event that they do bring it up (which I doubt they will), just be as concise as possible. A simple "I think the plot is really well written", or "The characters are really complex and interesting" would probably suffice. You don't have to sell the show to them, just be honest. At the end of the day, it's just a meaningless opinion, you shouldn't let it effect you too much. I'm sure your friend will be able to bail you out in some way too!

Actually, maybe you could mention it to your friend, just say that you'd rather not talk about it to anyone.

If they do ask you just say that you like it. You don't need to go into detail at all. If they disapprove, who cares? They probably won't even mention it.

I can't make signatures.

Bring over all your merc you have! Put on all the Pony shirts and throw them on them! That will sure convert them!

Nah joke aside, ( And the fact that it would cost way too much >.> ) I wouldn't try to make any references to it, and I would also ask your friend to not talk about it to them, telling him it makes you uneasy. In the end I don't know them so I can't tell you more than that, but you can also try to ask them to not judge you.

Just think this

Everyone who hates it, just never saw it

Ugh, that is a bad attitude. "People who don't like what I like don't know anything about it." Is just absurd.

I do always carry with me that, just in case.

If they do bring it up in a less than favorable attitude and seems as though you’re in an awkward situation, I'd just tell them about the popularity of it and make it seem as though you’re definitely not alone in the demographic. That way it may seem as if they’re insulting a whole mass of people rather than just giving you a hard time.

Awesomeness = at least 20% Cooler.

Then don't reply. Ultimately they're the ones being rude for hating you for watching MLP, especially considering that you're not their kid.

Alternatively, like the posters above suggest, let them know about either the show's quality or it's massive internet popularity.

In either case, take it in good humor.

"I like it because I like it."

Or you can take the more complicated but polite way of not answering or giving a simple explanation.

Don't be nervous, it's not like they can hurt you or anything. The most they can do is "verbally assault" you, in which case you simply ignore the insults and criticism.

Y'alright?

Like everyone else, you have to explain this sort of stuff maturely so they can at least think it is probable you aren't gay/an idiot. You have to, in depth, explain why you would like such a thing, and how people could be attracted to it despite its targeted age group. If you think about going far enough, explain how people being intolerant about this sort of thing is unreasonable. If you put enough logic to it, you might not only lessen their hateful thoughts on that topic, but you might gain their respect through your speech!

If they comment on you being a brony, just say that you like what you like. You enjoy the show and it brings you happiness when your feeling sad or if your going through a tough time then you won't feel so mad or upset if you watch everypony show that life has ups that overweigh the Downs. If they still call you an idiot than say you stick by your right to like what you want to like and it shouldn't change because someone thinks otherwise.

I had a friend who thought I was a doormat because I liked anime and because it was the 'thing at the time' (she LOVED following the crowd and doing everything she thought was 'cool') she never stopped calling me gay and lesbian, stupid for stuff like that. They're the real idiots and if they bring it up and tease you say: "It's not my fault the only good show on TV is about ponies." Because frankly FIM and Transformers ARE the only good shows on TV now adays.
