A Crazy Idea

I need everyone to hear me out about something I've been thinking about that would be kind of a big deal.

*AHEM*

What if they (and we) "Derpy" a new official name?

Here's the thing: that word actually started out as a derogative term aimed at dumb people and dumb actions, based on the word "duhr" and "duh", used to denote someone saying or doing something dumb in a less than kind manner.

"Oh how derpy of us!"

*Someone says something obvious* "Derp!"

"Well, that was derpy"

"He's derped again"

I can't blame the Hub/DHX/Hasbro for taking that out of "The Last Roundup". I actually find it annoying that Bronies stick up for that name when they should know full it's origin. They may as well call her "Stupid Hooves", "Idiot Hooves", "Moron Hooves" or even "Retarded Hooves"

Heck, I prefer the name "Ditzy Doo" myself (she could be related to Daring!), but "ditzy" is also a cheap shot at someone's intelligence ("What a ditz!")...one aimed at females no less! Though it has become a little less insulting and maybe even a tad more affectionate/cuter than it was first invented...

Even her toys/merchandise go out of their way to leave her nameless. I have even seen her vinyl figure with "I <3   :muffins:"  where a name was supposed to be and a playset that had picture of a muffin where a name should be.

So I for one suggest calling her a new name. I kind of like the idea of calling her "Bubbles", not only for her cutie mark, but to suggest she has a "bubbly" personality and might be "bubble headed", which still works. Also...if she talks again, Tara Strong could use the same voice she did for a certain Powerpuff Girl

C'mon people. Many of you are always talking about being more open minded when it comes to her, so think it over for a few minutes. If ya'll want her to show up more/get a bigger role, her having a name that DIDN'T start it's existence as an insult would be a great start...

There. I said my piece.

In fact, anyone know how I can contact DHX or Hasbro???

How do you think WE feel?!

Be prepared for crap raining on your parade for suggesting the name "Derpy" is offensive.

Myself? I couldn't care less. She could be named Graybow Dash for all I care – in the end, she's just a background pony to me.

The thing is, she's flagship for the fandom. We created her. She's our child. ;-;

I only love you platonically.

As in plate tectonics.

As in two bodies sliding against each other.

Yeah, I feel her name has too much history to it. It's like getting a pet dog and then suddenly changing its name to something different. The name has already stuck for too long to change it now.

(I mean, you technically *could* change it, but it won't stop people from remembering her as derpy)

Her name may have once been traced back to more offensive roots, but nowadays her name is used in a different, more endearing manner. Instead of using derp as a negative synonym for stupid or retarded, Her "derpness" is embraced and celebrated as a positive goofy trait, since we all have a little derp in us.

While I don't personally see anything wrong with the name Bubbles (in fact, I think I read somewhere that someone from the animation team wanted to call her Bubbles and make her a parallel to Bubbles the Powerpuff Girl), I agree with what Delernil and Crazitaco said.  We've been calling this pony Derpy Hooves since season 1.  Changing her name now would basically be like a slap in the face to the fandom that created her.

I also do not support that squeaky Bubbles voice for any reason, mainly because it is annoying as buck.  I honestly don't mind the silent Derpy we saw in "Rainbow Falls."

Graybow Dash... I don't know why I found that name so funny

Anyway, the names just kind of stuck now. For better or worse she'll be remembered as Derpy and I don't know how much good a retcon will do (probably just ignite another drama explosion).

I've mentioned this before but I'll say it again. I think the word "derp" originated on South Park via this

And this

That's the first place I ever heard the word and I didn't hear it again until it appeared in rage comics. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if these South Park episodes are the origin of "derp" then it doesn't mean "retarded" or anything else offensive. It means oversimplified silliness to the point of being annoying -which Derpy kind of is; if not to us, then to the other ponies.

Actually I find it more annoying that people think this is what it means...

Princess Lona got it though.

Derp was just a JOKE, a silly word that people used to mark a moment when someone would say/do something silly (such as mispronounce a word, or ask an obvious question).

The word has been ABUSED to no end, and only RECENTLY took on this new meaning.

Literally "Retarded" isn't even a derogatory word either. I'd rather be called retarded than "mentally handicapped" any day.

Retarded only means slow, where as mentally handicapped means you've something not right in your head. Mentally ill is even worse, as that would imply your sick.

Most PC terms are truly WORSE than the word/term they replace...

The character herself (derpy) was a derp. She was an OBVIOUS mistake that one of the animators left in the scene.

Thus, she is Derpy, and always will be.
