My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic to last another 5 years

So much pessimism. At worst I see this show just becoming average. Not bad, not amazing. Just entertaining.

Seeing as how this show has been bringing in new talent each season, especially Season 4, I can see this show keeping consistantly good, even if there is a quality decline. When someone gets bored writing for it, find some new talent who does care. Spongebob and Simpsons hurt because they are tired and have just a handful of writers I'm a cycle to mass produce eps. They became average because it's talent stagnated.

One thing I hope is that if the show goes on for 10 seasons.. Guys.. Kingdoms outside Equestria. The world as a whole.. They'll have time to explore this. That's what I want to see.

Well, colour me pleased! This was a nice bit of news, I always hoped MLP would last until S6,

People do have a point when they say that the quality may decline, however. The MLP staff are much better writers than the Spongbob staff, though.

I wonder if it would be better if they did a 'rotation' team-one season has a team of writers and another has a diffrent team. Maybe that would be better.

I strongly disagree. Spongebob is 1000 times better at humor in my opinion. All the jokes in MLP are corny and lame. (Except for best pony, Pinkie's awesome humor. )

That's a good point, though, what's stopping the current staff to not leave the show withing those five years?

The staff on SpongeBob never left. Certain members of it left as already have with MLP. The person that people really noticed a change after they left in SpongeBob's case was the creator and MLP has already lost theirs. If any other members of the staff leave, I wouldn't be surprised because writers like to move on to other shows but the SpongeBob case already happened and the idea that many people have that the whole crew just left was never true and is very unlikely to happen to FiM because Hasbro knows better than to let that happen.

I do like Spongebob from Season 1 to 3 and some eps in S9. But the seasons in between? Well...er, I think I'm entitled to my own opinion :)

The biggest issue was even a slight decline in quality is the fandom itself. To most Season 4 has been great. But there's still this group saying "Everything was better in MY day." If and when the show does lose it's edge you just know that number will grow and the naysayers will be dancing around saying "See!? I told you so! I told you this show was dying! This show is Holocaust 2! Faust is rolling in her grave.". The slightest decline in quality makes fandoms go nuts. I'll just be relaxing thinking "Let's see what the ponies are up to" as a comfortable routine.

I'm just worried this fandom will lose their shit over a slight decline in quality considering how bronies overreact. -_-

The general tendency is for shows to decline in quality, but that's far from a guarantee. It would probably come down to having the right mix of writers. Old ones to keep the show's original vision intact and new ones to bring in fresh ideas. Or it could just come down to having really good writers.

One interesting benefit of the show being on for so long, is that the "core demographic" will have also aged five years. So it's possible they could make the show grow up with the audience, and tell more complex stories over time.

Guys, guys. Just something runs a long time doesn't mean it's going to get bad. Doctor Who anyone? That show has been running for damn a century and it's still good.

Because they changed up the writers. And the regeneration makes it easy for the show to run without getting stale.

I honestly doubt MLP will go back to the level of quality S2 gave us.

Unlikely, they'll probably just stick to what sells.

I am optimistic. And if they do start running out of ideas, I wouldn't mind if the story arc for the current main characters ended and some new characters were introduced for us to follow. Maybe after the CMC get their cutie marks we can follow them through the rest of growing up. Maybe Lyra and Bon Bon become key players with canon back stories. There are so many realms and minor characters in Equestria to be explored and expanded upon. Twilight and company could still play a supporting role here andthere, the way Celestia does now. Some people may say that introducing new characters is a cheap way to extend a show, but I think it could work. It may have to be given a new subtitle to replace "Friendship is Magic" though.

51 years =/= a century. Also, that's one of the very few examples, if not the only example, of a show not becoming total crap after an extensive running time.

The Simpsons, Family Guy, Spongebob Squarepants, and Phineas & Ferb are prime examples of a cartoon declining in quality after a long period of time. This show's fourth season so far hasn't been helping in terms of an optimistic future, either.

Okay, Half a Century, it's still long enough to outlive fans,

The amount of massive Coke-bottle thick season 2 Nostalgia Goggles in this thread is painful.

I was going to join the neighsayer bandwagon, but you actually raise a very good point. After thinking it over a bit more, these are my thoughts:

  • If FiM keeps the same formula, it will eventually run out of ideas and become stale/basically revert previous character development
  • Therefore, it will have to introduce some sort of changes along the way to keep the show fresh
  • However, large-scale changes will inevitably cause the loss of some fans. There will always be some opposed to change on principle.
  • Saying that, broader changes can (potentially)  attract a new audience to the show. Furthermore, if the changes are handled well and peoples' concerns are suitably addressed, fan fallout can be greatly reduced.

Therefore, if it wants to stay fresh, it'll have to keep introducing changes and executing them almost flawlessly.

Whilst I admit that the probability of that going on for the entire run is low... Ii can have hope... right?

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

For the next five years?!

I'm sorry. A fourth season was okay. A fifth season had me skeptical. To keep this show running for another five years, it's impossible for this show not to get old by then. No amount of faith in the writers or the developing staff will change the inevitability that MLP will decline in quality like all of those before it.

Ahem,

*lowers my gun so you can change the channel as it' been making you watch MLP for 4 years now.*

I'm sorry guys I've been doing this to striker, all this time.  It's not very fair or bronish.

But seriously,

what bothers you?

People will keep enjoying it after your done?

That's kinda of well..

disgusting.

Why are some people taking good news badly?  Okay, let me remind all you that this is Hasbro we're talking about.  They are good about keeping good projects going while letting bad ones starve.  They will not let this show devolve into nonsense.

.....

5 years is alot to plan in advance.

Like i remember when venture brothers renewed for 2 seasons

that was pretty big.

but 5 seasons?...............

it's not april is it?

like what show gets renewed for 5 years?

like on the spot.

all at once?  That's really weird.

That might spawn an Equestria Girls serie, I will not say no to that one

I'm looking forward to this. It's a bit too early to tell whether it will be another Spongebob or not. I'll start getting concerned when the show starts dipping in quality and so far it hasn't done that yet. Right now, I'd go as far as to say that Season 4 is turning out to be the show's best season.

It's not like S2 was great or anything, but considering the disappointment of S3, and S4 being just OK, I'd currently consider it to be the show's peak of quality.

I'd honestly consider season 4 the the shows peak so far.

They put more work into it, thats why.

and they put put work into this show as well.

Let's hope they find a way to make it fresh.... Like maybe change up the main characters within a couple seasons... Or maybe Equestria gets overruled by evil pony warlords for the greater part of a season.....

It's good to see that it will last for quite a while.

In my opinion, it's really not.

Rainbow Falls, Daring Don't,  Filli Vanilli, Rarity Takes Manehattan, Power Ponies, and Simple Ways are this season's mediocre-to-absolutely-terrible episodes (in order, might I add). This is nearly half of the episodes aired thus far. If they keep this up, I don't think there's going to be much hope for the rest of this season, let-alone a fifth plus another five years.

I must just be a minority, because this season has me more enthusiastic than I have been in a long time. I'm loving the hell out of it.

Also, I'll fight with you about Power Ponies. It's been one of my favorite episodes. I'll also fight with you about RTM based on the song alone.
