I know that Diet soda was created in the 1960's because of national health concerns and what-not, but if there's so many people in America who are worried about their weight, why do they even buy soda in the first place? People who say "I drink Diet pop because I don't want to get fat!" are...really unreasonable, to put it nicely.

I'm particularly passionate about this issue because my parents have been Diet Coke lovers for years. And I use the term "lovers" lightly, because neither of them really enjoy it. It's just there. When they want something to drink, they grab a diet coke. Why? Because it's there. And both of them claim they are "used to the taste", which is why they compulsively buy it so often.

Why would anyone buy a watered-down product, which they don't even enjoy that much, in order to..what, exactly? They're not losing weight by drinking it. The taste isn't good. There's no reason for it to be a part of their lives. At all.

So why do my parents, and everybody else in the world for that matter, still buy Diet Pop? If you want sugar, buy the regular kind! If you don't want sugar, don't buy it at all!

By purchasing Diet pop, you're letting companies know that you like watered down, sh*tty, bland, barely drinkable, substances. All for the noble cause of losing weight. Well guess what? If you want to lose weight, work out. And don't buy pop. Period. Diet soda is not a solution for weight gain or improving physical fitness.

I'm sorry if this is a bit too ranty, or if my frustration seems irrational to you, but Diet Pop seriously annoys the heck out of me. If I want pop, I want sugary pop with interesting flavors, not some watered-down garbage. Does anybody else feel this way?

Diet Coke tastes exactly like Pepsi to me. I prefer Pepsi anyway so I buy diet coke or coke zero because it has less calories in it and I can enjoy drinking something nice without feeling guilty about putting on weight like when drinking regular soda.

I don't drink diet soda to lose weight, I drink it to maintain my weight.

I think that a lot of people who are trying to lose wight think that drinking this soda along with their food will help them lose weight just because it says "diet" in the can.

Diet soda actually still has quite a bit of sugar in it.

As far as taste goes, I'm not a fan :/

I mean, I'll drink it if it's all we have but it's definitely not something I drink leisurely.

I actually don't drink pop often. I avoid it because it was the cause of some tooth removals m&m's the past.

I also know that it isn't good for you overall.

Makes sense. I wasn't aware that there were people who genuinely enjoyed the taste of Diet Coke. I've always gotten a resounding "meh" from most people when I ask them if they like to drink it.

I guess if you genuinely like it, and it doesn't really affect your weight in a positive or negative way, then that's..awesome. What bothers me is the people who are under the impression that it's a legitimate health drink.

To me it just tastes exactly like regular Pepsi. The flavouring between the US and EU versions may differ though, I'm not quite sure. I don't really know of anyone else who prefers the diet to the regular for the taste other than myself. For me, it's more of the fact I can feel a little bit less guilty about drinking it because I know there are less calories. Coke Zero is my favourite rather than the diet as it has less sugars and sweeteners.

People who believe it is a health drink need a wake up call. Soda is soda and it is bad for you, whether it says diet or zero or sugar free.

Yeah, that's the ironic thing about it for people who like to think of Diet Coke as a healthy alternative.

When compared to Coke though, I will begrudgingly admit that Diet Coke has absolutely no fat content, and no "real" sugars. So in that sense, Diet Coke isn't quite as bad as people make it out to be either,

I really don't like anything that has 0 calories in it. This mostly came from drink Diet Sunkist. Sunkist is my favorite soda, but I can't stand Diet Sunkist.

Though, Diet Coke isn't too bad. I'll drink it if there's nothing else left in the basement fridge.

Aspartame, the artificial sweetner in Diet Coke is a poison and a carcinogen. There is no reason to EVER drink diet soda. Additionally it is an addictive compound. It is the same sweetner sold as Nutrasweet and is the cause for around 90 different diseases of affluence in first world countries.

Actual medical reasearch shows that Aspartame is worse then sugar as it is more addicitive and increases obesity faster then sugar based on stimulation of fat storage by your metabolism, increase appetite, and increase cravings of complex carbohydrates. THis inceases the chance of diabetes as the chemical make up of Aspartame, namely aspartic acid, increases your pancreases insulin secretion and leptin secretion which control fat storage and satiety (being full or feeling full) respectively. Metabolism goes haywire do to the hormone dump, your body stores fat and your cravings increase....ALL FOR ZERO CALORIES!

I do not like Diet Coke. The aftertaste just isn't good, so I always stick to the regular form of any soda.

In the UK, at least, Diet Coke (And Diet Pepsi) tastes just like their original brands heavily watered down. Coke Zero is even worse: It tastes like a HEAVILY watered down Coke with a nasty aftertaste. In fact, most soda has that kind of horrible, artificial taste (To me, at least), so I rarely touch soda. Only stuff i'll touch are Marley's Mellow Mood (Which is basically some kind of herbal soda/juice thing) Rubicon juice (And yes, I know juice is packed with sugar etc; etc; but you tell me to put down my cup of Rubicon guava and i'm going to hit you with it), tea or coffee.

Thankfully, a lot of fast food places up here tend to have tea on the menu, so there's no need to give yourself diabeetus when you can get a proper brew.

I like soda. I don't like the 250cal per bottle. I work out and I'm sure as fuck not going to waste those workout drinking sugary soda. Ergo, I drink Diet Coke/Coke Zero/Diet Pepsi because it tastes like soda without fucking me up.

Edit: I don't drink large amounts of it. Maybe a bottle every few days.

Edit: Bring back cyclomates!

Edit: Holy fuck the amount of research that's been done on this is astounding.

Yeah... so you should probably read the study that the article is referencing. The experiment is done on rats. If this distinction doesn't mean anything to you I'll spell it out. Their metabolic processes use completely different proteins than humans and can't really be used as anything other than a general pointer.

Here's a two better studies done on humans: (I can provide alternate links if these studies are locked out for you guys)

Marley's Mellow Mood (Which is basically some kind of herbal soda/juice thing)

This is pretty much the only remotely unhealthy drink I touch, it's great. Never been a fan of Coke/Pepsi (Dr Pepper is even worse) so I assume I wouldn't like the diet versions of those drinks either. Never really understood the fascination with fizzy/sugary drinks. :/

Personally, I really don't think Diet and regular taste that different, and I would have a tough time identifying them. But I also don't think Diet is really that much better for you than regular.

All of this is irrelevant anyway, because we all know Pepsi Max is best drink.

I usually drink diet soda. It had a lot less sugar and calories, and working out and trying to lose a little weight makes that a decent option.

I like Diet Coke better than Diet Pepsi, but in a store I'll buy Diet Mtn Dew or Diet Dr. Pepper first.

I am mostly against diet soda's and artificial sweeteners. My dad uses splenda a lot, because he is diabetic, so I have to give that one a pass.
