Leaving civilisation behind

I don't know what it is, but for a while I've been utterly fascinated by all these isolated and indigenous tribes (e.g Sentinelese) who have somehow resisted the onslaught of the 'modern' world as we know it. I often contemplate what my life would be like if I transferred to say, a rainforest or some place remote, and lived off nature. I would probably never do it in my lifetime, but if reincarnation exists I'd love to be born into one of these tribes.

Has anyone else felt the same or similar, or has some food4thought on topic?

I'd definitely leave all the civilisation behind me and live under the stars, only if the modern world as we now know it would collapse by some great natural disaster or by other devastating means! I've always found the tribal life fascinating in my opinion and as such is greatly reflected in my OC! :)

I hate modern civilization with its bureaucratic nonsense and political "correctness."

Something that I have done to get more in touch with life separated from the modern world is just opt out of a lot of what makes our world so modern.  No Tv, no newest piece of technology (i.e. tablets and smartphones).  I may not have internet at home, but I am on here using the internet at work.  Work is the only place I use internet. We rarely eat out, don't "shop" but instead get "supplies," which means we (for the most part) do not buy anything we may find to our liking or anything we really do not NEED....That's why I don't shop as many women do. I ignore any clothing outlets and any sense of fashion and just get what is practical and actually does its job as a piece of clothing should (like having a scarf that actually keeps your warm, instead of it being a part of your fashion and inherently useless because of the material), and that is easily done by buying used clothes and military surplus. Other than tools, ponies, and books, we really buy food, and even there, it's about once every 2 months where we go to an actual grocery store (how I loathe walmart). In the coming years, we hope to become organic farmers for local CSA's while providing food for our own needs.

We even further implement this by taking up hobbies that are not normal (just look at my profile) by modern hobby standards.

It's harder to find like minded people, but we feel like we are enjoying life a lot more by not following the crowd. Plus, we have a completely different perspective on the path modern society is going down. We are "looking from the outside in" as you say.

In other words, it's possible to move away from modern society in some form while moving towards a more simple way of life that many indigenous tribes all over the world have.  :)

That's funny, I thought you said something about us being civilized.

In a world where ruthless exploitation and lack of accountability still remains the norm, where income inequality, general and relative deprivation is not only the outcome but considered normal and to top it all off, seeing so much willful ignorance to the root causes and resistance to anything that could change things for the better. Calling ourselves "civilized" is nothing but an obscenely narcissistic joke.

This might not be too relevant but I usually wish I lived in Atlantis. And could breath water

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it save equistria with its five candy coloured friends and shoot rainbows at bad guys using their necklaces and tiara unless you're celestia

It's only been during the past 30 years that my parents indigenous community in Mexico started to get some of those things we consider essential. Plumbling, electricity, and a school; looking back, those two years I lived in a shack in the mountains were actually really amazing.

On the other hand, some of those older customs they had are starting to die; mostly because of the money that started flowing into that particular region.

I think there are certain aspects of our lifestyle (which developed from Neolithics) that have brought joy, for example electronics that can before the advent of digitalisation and computers. However, too many things, such as the concept of property, plus many others already mentioned, have brought our wellbeing into a spiral of decline. I hope there is a way of marrying the best of both lifestyles.

Life without internet?

What kind of a joke is that?

But in all seriousness, I really do need internet access. Even if it will a slow satellite or dial-up connection.

Internet is enormously useful as a storage of information. Living without it would be not living at all.

I also can not exist without shower. I just feel really bad if I dont have shower every 12-16 hours.

So, if I get internet and shower, I'm fine with being everywhere. I dont mind growing food, making stuff from scratch, existing on bare minimum.

1. Why do you need so much information?

2. Why shower when you can swim?

Because life is not enough to learn everything from experience.

It's not the same, I've tried.

Well I feel sorry for you. I'm sure the answers to those questions are both completely different when you're in the middle of nowhere.

Well, I'm not in the middle of nowhere.

Living in the middle of nowhere is.. not really that different from living like an animal or actually being semi-sapient animal.

If Civilization fell I'd be screwed. I don't even live in a giant city or anything, I live in a rather small farmer town. I would just not feel right to know that I could be in a city when I'm in the middle of some jungle, or something.

I'd miss Cities, that's for sure. All of the technology, lights, sounds, ect.

I'm sure living in a tribe that's isolated from the rest of the world wouldn't be so horrible though. I mean, I'd rather live in an isolated tribe than in a theocratic country.

Interesting question. I've recently had a revelation on this subject. In order to have all the credits necessary to graduate, I took phytotherapic medicine classes. Both because I needed the credits and because I wanted to learn about it. Turns out my teacher was capable of providing very good evidence that these thing actually work as well, and in some cases, better than allopathic medicine. This made me think. It's supposed to be used as complimentary medication, but it's something I had no belief in.

Initially, I'd never consider living away from the "civilized world", but now I wonder if we really need all that we have surrounded ourselves with. Of course, i'd still not up and leave, but let's say that a step has been taken in this direction.

And I'm just getting started.

Well, I do enjoy some of the benefits that modern "civilization" brings, but I think many people are too dependant on it. I think I could cope with the "tribal life" but I am in no hurry to try it.

And, quite honestly, the Stone Age people were more civilized than us, on the whole.

Sure go right ahead. No internet, so that means you wont be able to watch videos, play games, or go on the forums.

Say good bye to easy food preparations. You will now have to hunt (which I doubt that you could because it takes experience to do so.)

Forget about air conditioning, warm showers, and a soft bed at night. (Little things like socks, toothbrushes, and candy will all be gone.)

Life for people like these is hard... trust me. I doubt that most people here on the internet even have what it takes to live in such conditions. Ive seen a couple of national geographic videos that show the life of people who live in the jungle and forests. It really makes you appreciate what you have.

I would not leave human civilization, I would minimize modern civilization, with some amenities that people can benefit from, such as plumbing or internet, however all of the grotesque and perverse negativity I can do without. When I was in the navy, I saw the best and worst of modernity almost simultaneously, there was praise and denounce and the two sides would wade into each other like gladiators, trying to prove who was the better half wit, in our quest for progress and control, we have surrendered our humanity and authority, we trusted others to defend our wealth and freedom, so in doing so we are now a world of the exploited, used as a bargaining goods by politicians or aristocrats, wanting to behave like absolute monarchs, deciding what our roles are in their civilization. I can cope in a small community though, I had to when I served navy, we knew each other, we knew what the other is thinking, and we could just enjoy the bounty of life, without so modern civilization that can be used as a tool for control, I like human civilization and I would do my part for someone else, I think the best example of human versus modern, it would be the South African film "The Gods Must be Crazy", I think it is very interesting in how it compares the bushmen of the Kalahari with modern, urban people, check it out you might see what people are like.
