gaming The best Paper Mario game

I recently gotten into Paper Mario again. I was wanting to know, out of all 4 of the Paper Mario games, which do you vote the best?

Explain why?

I vote the first Paper Mario on the 64. I think its the best because the story line, all the cool levels, and just how the game play was. I would say Paper Mario on the Gamecube as well, but its sorta the same Adventure, but with some differences, but its still GREAT! The first one will always win in my opinion.

The other 2 are great..but....not as great as the first 2.

Either the first one or the second one. The first one because of a great story line, fun partners to play with, and all around just being awesome. The second one cause it was a whole new story, yet it kept the Paper Mario feeling. The third and fourth however... The story was okay but the gameplay was just horrid compared to the first two. Sure this is coming from someone who prefers turn based games so it's a bit biased... But it's just my opinion, so it's no big deal if I get a bit biased, lol

I really did not like it how in Super Paper Mario, you could just hit enemies and kill them. Yes, it was helpful sometimes other than going into battle every 5 seconds you hit an enemies, but I did like those epic battle moments. They reminded me of Pokemon xD

I know right?! Pokemon is probably the main reason I liked the first two the most (Pokemon was basically my life for... However long, lol)

Absolutely the first two, but mostly The Thousand Year Door for me. It's probably my favorite Mario game ever, besides Super Mario 64.

I tried playing Super Paper Mario, and I really didn't like it :/

The first one holds a special place with me. I rented that game so much when I was a kid that my parents bought the game (and we really weren't that well off at the time.) I loved the art design, the story, the wide open world that you could explore that was all seemlessly connected in some way. Utter brilliance.

The second one was great too, but looking back at it now, it had a lot of backtracking. That being said, there were some great moments in there too like Glitzville and the Excess Express. Overall, fantastic game, but I think it falls just a bit short of my experience with the first one.

Super Paper Mario had a good storyline and clever writing, but I missed the old RPG mechanics. It was a "meh", I played through it and enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as the previous two. One factor was how bland the pixls were. They showed up, did their spiel once and they never spoke again. Tippi was a great character and made up for some of that though.

Sticker Star... oh boy... It basically took everything I loved about paper mario and killed it. Badges? Gone. Partners? Gone. The world's been turned into a level select screen, there's no reason to get in battles, coins are useless... Yeah, didn't like it.

(sorry if I went on a bit too much, I just really like this series... TLDR: 1 > 2 > 3 > 4)

I really agree about Super Paper Mario's story line. It had a good story line and clever writing. I did like Tippi though. But, I wish they would have kept the old game play. Being Luigi, Peach, and Bowser was pretty cool too...though, once again. i want the original game play.

Thousand Year Door, hands down. The loved the characters and gameplay the most (especially the fact that partners had their own hp). Plus they really went all out with the paper motif, which was very entertaining. The first Paper Mario is, of course, very good as well, and I definitely take Bow over any of the other partners ( mostly because boos are one of my favorite Mario enemies XD ), but overall I find Thousand Year Door is just better.

I actually like the second one for GCN more than the first one for N64. (Though I still love the first one.) I think it has a nicer style, it feels like the gameplay is more streamlined, and it offers a lot more play. But hey, that's the result of being part of a later generation. The story and writing it pretty comparable in each one. The barrage of paper-related tasks in the GCN one does wear a little thin but that's my only real gripe about it.

I don't like the fourth one for 3DS, and really don't like the third.one for Wii. The 3DS one feels extremely linear, almost emulating FFXIII, and offers very little in terms of strategy building. But at least it's an RPG! I don't think the Wii one should have existed in the first place! The 2D-esque style does not lend itself at all for a platformer. It's just way too much of a departure from the rest of the series.

That's just my two bits.  :P

Thousand Year Door, no question. It's not only the best Paper Mario game, it's also my absolute favorite game period. I won't bore you with going into detail about how much I adore every facet of this game, so I'll just leave it at that.

That doesn't mean the original isn't still an enjoyable experience on it's own. It set the groundwork for the mechanics and gameplay and still managed to be enjoyable for what it's worth. My only complaint would be that the game still tries desperately to fit into the tried-and-true Mario mold and doesn't do much to differentiate itself tone-wise from the rest of the franchise. The plot is virtually identical to nearly every other mario game: Bowser kidnaps Peach for the ten-billionth time and Mario had to traverse through several different worlds to save her, with some RPG mechanics thrown into the mix.

Super Paper Mario however, is a letdown from beginning to end save for a few rare moments of enjoyment. The "partners" in this game are all literally one dimensional and coming from a game that had beautifully developed side-characters like TTYD that does more damage to the games reputation than anything else. The fact that the game is ridiculously easy doesn't do it any favors either.

I haven't played Sticker Star so I can't really remark on it too much, though I did see the teaser that claimed they were bringing back partners...before that was scrapped completely. At that point, it feels less like a Paper Mario game and more like just a Mario game done in a papery art style.

As many others have said, the first two hands down. Super Paper Mario was okay-ish, but the entire feel of the game was changed and I didn't like it. And Sticker Star was only for 3DS, which I don't like because I don't have one, and I have no doubt that it wasn't good anyway.

I must say, though, that Nintendo missed one of the biggest opportunities it ever had by not making a Paper Luigi game from Luigi's story in Thousand Year Door. I would have payed many dollars for that.

All of them!

Not-so-copout answer: It's honestly a tie between Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario. While SPM ultimately had great ideas that they didn't use to their full potential I liked the worlds and characters in it. So much variety and good ol' Mario RPG comedy throughout.

I've barely played any of the original Paper Mario but from what I have played it felt really slow and clunky compared to TTYD. It was polished so much that going back to the original is really hard.

Still haven't played Sticker Star though. It's on my list of 3DS games to get.

uhhhhhh, can't decide between the first and TTYD. The former, introduced a well written story, colorful environments and characters, amazing boss fights and music.

The Thousand Years Door, the environments were  smaller, and had a lot of backtracking, but the battles became more spectacular with the new options you got, like the stylish moves and new badges, and also a more flexible action command, which were a welcomed addition, since the enemies are stronger than in the first game. Darker and more unpredictable storyline made me wonder if I was playing a Mario game. AND THE MUSIC WAS FREAKING SPECTACULAR

Super Paper Mario, it had a good storyline and characters (apart of the pixls), but I didn't liked the gameplay, specially the 3D mode. It encourages to use it very much, which would have been fine, if not where for the meter that harms you if it empties, and it takes FOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER to fill up

Sticker Stars...... didn't bothered to buy it, because of how limited sounds using one-time stickers, and made fighting enemies pointless and impractical, something that I loved about the first two games, not to mention that kicking every ass I see is one of my greatest pleasures in videogames ¬¬
