Would "Filli Vanilli" be better if it was a Rainbow Dash episode?

Watching the episode again, I found it weird that the ponies were surprised with Fluttershy's singing voice when she has sung a lot of times in the series.

That one thought got me thinking further: "Well if not Fluttershy then who should have this supposed hidden singing talent?". My answer to that was clear: Rainbow Dash.

Rainbow Dash NEVER had a solo song throughout the entire series so it would make sense if none of ponies knew she had an awesome singing voice.

The moral of the story can be changed a bit by turning it into Rainbow Dash not wanting to be involved with a "geeky activity" of being in an acapella group and maintaining her "radicalness". Have one of the female members of the Ponytones lose their voice and even do a continuity nod with Dash's love for that pony musical in "Rarity takes Manehattan". I think this episode would be improved as a result.

Any thoughts?

I can't say for sure, but it was still fine as a Fluttershy episode(even if the ending could have been better).

I guess it depends of your preferences to the mane 6. I mean, a lot of people (including me) think Filli Vanilli was good as it was. However, you've got a point, it would've been much surprising and exciting if we'd get Rainbow singing. But the thing is, the plot of the episode, as the writers wanted it to be, fitted Fluttershy the best. I think we are not getting Rainbow Dash solo this season but it would be amazing to have it some day! I like your idea, and definitely yes, it'd be better for me if RD was the one singing, but this is just because I want her to do a solo since season 3

Rainbow Dash doesn't have stage fright issues.  You really don't have an episode without it.

It doesn't have to be about stage fright. It can be about Rainbow Dash not wanting to admit to having a talent that goes against her definition of being cool.

That is an interesting angle to Rainbow Dash's character, in a season that's been lackluster in developing her (I especially like the bit about the continuity nod to Rarity Takes Manehattan). That said, we already saw some similar moral to this in Read-It-And-Weep. The episode does work fine as is, I don't think it would be an improvement or a downgrade. Just something interesting as a hypothetical, 'Hasbro could have done this'.

No, Fluttershy was the best pony for this epiosde. She's the shyest of the 6, and it would have been a bit odd if it was Rainbow Dash instead of her.

The episode would have had to been radically different if it was Rainbow Dash instead of Fluttershy, thus not making it "Filli Vanilli"

I think this episode was more suited to Fluttershy. It'd be interesting to have an episode revolving around Rainbow Dash and singing, but such a story like that wouldn't have really suited her.

I don't know how they would've set up RD singing in big mac's place :/

If you replaced Big Mac with a female singer within RD's range, it still wouldn't make sense because she would technically have no reason to sing in the background.

There would've been no awesome continuity nod to flutter guy and the moral would've made no sense. I think the episode was written with Fluttershy in mind.

The song itself is about expressing yourself through music, if you aren't a talker, and you can see Big Mac & Fluttershy both finding the music, due to their "lack of words", Dashie is a talker, and she likes to be the center of attention, nothing wrong with that, and I love Dashie, but this episode just wasn't for her, this was a Fluttershy moment, and we got to see another talent/interest of Fluttershy.

No because you can't replace a big macintosh with a rainbow guy.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it save equistria with its five candy coloured friends and shoot rainbows at bad guys using their necklaces and tiara unless you're celestia

I remember watching something on youtube about this, some songs are made to continue the plot, give development, or are just there, it doesn't mean they're actually singing... but i guess with fluttershy saying "Do you wanna sing about it again?" in may the best pet win sorta destroys the purpose of that.

Maybe she sung better when she was alone than with all her friends?

In my opinion, this is why the others were shocked about hearing her sing. I don't think any of the others have ever heard Fluttershy sing a solo - though, correct me if I'm wrong. But personally, I like to think they were amazed by how especially lovely her voice is in a solo.

Sorry, I don't agree. Out of the Mane 6 characters, only Fluttershy could've worked for the replacement of Big Mac's deep voice. Also, Rainbow Dash doesn't feel to me like the kind of character who struggles with stage fright and feels music within nature.

It doesn't matter to me personally, that episode is gold to me the way it is.

Everyone loves Misty. For good reason, of course. :3

Not this again.

What the Mane 6 actually said was "We've never heard you sing like that before", which could actually mean that they've heard her sing before, but weren't as impressed as this time.

And no, as others said, RD doesn't have the personality to make "Filli Vanilli" work.  It's already one of the season's best episodes bar Pinkie's behavior, so why complain?

As much as I like Rainbow Dash, her episode quality seem to range mostly from 'meh' too 'terrible', besides it would retread ground that's been beaten to death with her pride being the issue instead, like in 'The Mysterious Mare Do Well' and 'May the Best Pet Win'.
