How, and why is this group known as "Peruvian Nightmare Squad"?

I'm probably gonna sound like a dumbass for this, but I don't get it. Are they toys or are they people? I don't know what to make of it!

I tried looking through all the comments and couldn't find an explanation. Is there a Peruvian stereotype about soul-decaying creepiness?

Du Hast Mich, Peruvian Style

It's a photoshopped version of a still from a video recorded at an Equestria Girls promotional event at a store in Lima, Peru.

Since then, it's taken on a life -- or "afterlife", if you will -- of its own.

No word on what sort of therapy young attendees subsequently required, but if Equestria Girls toy sales are any guide, the psychological trauma was probably mild and transient in nature.

....What were they thinking? Reminds of this infamous video

Those costumes are just hideous, if they wanted to advertise for the toys (which they clearly were as the boxes of EQG dolls were shown in the vid), why would they use those? I just....I don't get it. Than again, yeah, the dolls were terrible themselves, and they were apparently a smash hit, so....

Edit: HOLY SHIT, I said costumers when I meant costumes, I seriously hope no one thought I meant customers :o

I really pity the cosplayers, though. Yet I wonder how did they get dubbed as "Peruvian Nightmare Squad"?

Here's an example (edited for lulz) :

That's...really creepy looking.

But it's kind of cool hearing the Spanish version of the Equestria Girls song! :)

I don't even get the purpose of that, why couldn't they just do up the actresses in make-up? Was there really a need for the masks?
