Superdogbiter 9 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 I think yes, sure the 1st gen didn't have a lot of characterization but then again it seems alot of cartoons in that time didn't have many personalitys. Especially when it came to cartoons targeted towards girls. But it's because of the 1st gen that we are even here, Lauren Faust loved the show, thats why she probably did the show because she had such fond memories of it. But the way some bronies bash is really taking it too far in my opinion. Also the way that Hasbro has done certain things with gen 4 like the live show. I mean yeah it's not that great but if you watch the vid you can hear the kids having fun. Let me tell you if i was 6 and saw that stage show as my pony loving self i'd crap my pants because of how awesome the costumes look. I don't think Hasbro has ever had to catered to a teenage and adult audience. I think some of the bronys are forgetting that kids do like this show as well and i think it's fair that Hasbro should make and do things desginated for the younger crowd. After all they are coming out with pony figures that look more like in the show. Note i'm not saying every brony is like this Sorry if this is so confusing
Pinkazoid 3,493 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 Exactly what I think, without First generation we would have never had the MLP we know and love now, and the youtube hate comments on the first generation ponies are all from bronies which really makes me sad, I actually used to like the first generation, but never the ones in the middle 2 :
Akemi Homura 7,680 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 First gen isn't that bad, to be honest. IIRC, there's a whole bunch of villains that make G1 look badass... G2 and G3 and G3.5 all suck, though. There is absolutely no plot or any sort of appreciative humor behind all those series. It was leverage for Hasbro to sell toys. I'm not hating on anything here. I'm just telling it as it is. While it's true without the past generations we wouldn't have G4, the whole thing with MLP is that because of the past series, current-gen MLP takes a lot of heat.
Crazy Misty 653 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 (edited) I hate to admit it but Faust didn't like Gen 1. She said herself that while she loved the toys, on the tv show all they'd do was "giggle over nothing, have endless tea parties and defeat villians by crying or sharing stories with them." I'm not sure where it was but I did read that somewhere. I personally don't like gen 1 because the artstyle is just god awful, in my opinion. HomuraBL 851 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 I took a look at Gen 1. Gen 1 was an adventure type thing and just like friendship is magic, it had mythological creatures. Although the humor was lacking, I think it would've been pretty good if they fixed that confusing plot in every episode. All other gens besides gen4 are bad however. Apple Bloom 2,933 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 Although G1 isn't for everyone, just as G4 isn't for everyone, I think a lot of bronies just don't give it a chance. Part of the reason many of them got into FiM is because of the art style, so when they look at G1 (or any previous gen) it just doesn't have the same visual appeal so they reject it without even watching an episode, or at least that's how I was initially. I eventually gave in though, and you know what? It's not as good as G4 but it isn't that bad, not for an 80's cartoon anyway. I think if I had been introduced to it when I was little I would have enjoyed it. 1 Signature by @Nico. Come join us for movies and more! hawkflame 3,310 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 I'm probably one of the few here old enough to remember when G1 first came out. Given that cartoon writing in the 80s wasn't that sophisticated, it wasn't terrible. I'd say it's probably about average for its time. It hasn't aged that well, but not a lot of shows from that era have. You have to accept it for what it was. Unlike Friendship is Magic, it wasn't written with multiple audiences in mind. It was strictly for young girls, and you pretty much have to look at it from that perspective. 2 Sig by Thunderstorm Check out my Rarity fansite! Stoner Spike 185 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 (edited) The first gen, yes. 2 and 3? Too harsh my ass, we're not being harsh enough! Ok, well, yeah...I've been checking out the other generations lately. I have to say G1 is...alright. On a scale of 1 to 10, it'd probably be a 4 or 5, either an OK show or just below average...G2 and G3, though...I'm surprised I didn't pull my eyes out of the sockets and boil them...It was so...so...stupid...and UGLY... Mhm, yeah, I'd rather just continue admiring FiM and not think of the older gens. Edited March 15, 2012 by Midnight 1 Yo Applejack... Y'alright? Daring Do 195 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 I agree with the rest. No matter how "disgusting" the first few My Little Pony generations were, this awesome generation would have never become this good without the other three's help! We owe it all to them, but we still focus how uncool it is compared to the fourth generation... Great adventuring for great treasures!....Except when I'm hurt... Heartstrings 102 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 I'd like to like the prior generations, but whenever I try to watch them they're just so awful and hard to sit through, ugh. Even the toys didn't look as cute as they do now. The fanbase can be kinda harsh sometimes, but there is a reason for it.
Luurilka 325 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGoDfEjy0Jc&feature=related I'm sorry, but if you want me to not be so harsh about his, it's probably not going to happen. And having other shows be even worse does not make G1 any better. tejntanga 42 March 15, 2012 Share March 15, 2012 The one thing I remember about the older gen ponies is one multi-parter story about a chest (or was it a cauldron?) of magic gold coins that could grant wishes. It was a typical "be wary what you wish for" Aesop story, but it was engaging enough to a pre-teen boy who just wanted to watch cartoons on TV. Had some decent antagonists and some pretty harrowing trials for such cutsey, pastel-colored ponies. I'm not savvy enough (nor do I really want to be) about the older gens to tell where it fits, but if that story is representative of what they had to offer, they weren't all that bad. Certainly better than the contemporary Care Bears. G4 is on a whole other level due to the love and dedication of one Ms Lauren Faust who infected the whole creative team behind FiM with her enthusiasm and great ideas about what makes a good show - not a "girl's show" but a "good show aimed for girls". This stark contrast is what I believe puts the older gen's in such poor light and generates the perceived (and some times real) hate towards them. Love and Tolerance for everyone! Especially the ones I don't agree with.
Key Gear 6,663 March 16, 2012 Share March 16, 2012 (edited) I respect those that enjoy the past generations, but I really do not care for them at all. The reason that I dislike the G1 ponies is because it was an 80s cartoon. It had many of the same flaws that other cartoons from that time period had, but, for me, these flaws were multiplied by the show's annoyingly unrealistic sappiness. I dislike G2 and G3 ponies because the shows were, quite honestly, not that good at all. On nearly any objective measure, those two generations were an abomination. Are you sure? I was positive she said she didn't like the older gens. I think that you are both right. Lauren Faust really, really liked to play with her G1 pony toys, and she did not like the tv show. In her own words: On TV, though, I couldn’t tell one girl character from another and they just had endless tea parties, giggled over nothing and defeated villains by either sharing with them or crying–which miraculously inspired the villain to turn nice. Even to my 7-year-old self, these shows made no sense and couldn’t keep my interest. No wonder the boys at school laughed at my Rainbow Unicorn Trapper Keeper. hawkflame 3,310 March 16, 2012 Share March 16, 2012 I've already spoken about G1, but I guess I never really addressed G2, 3, or 3.5. Now I want to be fair here and add that I've never seen a full episode of any of the previous generations (maybe G1 way, WAY back when, but that's it) it seemed like G2-3.5 kind of talked down to the audience as far as dialog and stories went. G1, while not anything brilliant, occasionally had actual conflict to deal with, and the characters spoke like, for lack of a better phrase, human beings. Characters in 2-3.5 seem to have this kind of "golly gee willikers" pseudo-baby talk that creators of kids' shows seem to think their audience enjoys. Plus you have to consider when the shows were made. Animated shows from the mid 80s don't really hold up that well today, and with some exceptions they weren't much more than entertaining junk food for the mind of an 8 year old. MLP was no better or worse than shows like Smurfs or Jem or whatever. But the later generations? They came out in the 2000s. After shows like Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Spongebob, and Kim Possible raised the bar for animation, even animation for girls. These shows proved that "it's just for kids"isn't an excuse- you can have shows for kids that are smartly written. It wasn't until G4 that MLP met (and surpassed) this standard. Leave a Whisper 703 April 29, 2016 Share April 29, 2016 (edited) Yes. I know that all fans are not like this But: You watch a Girl Show, claim that your proudly ditching gender stereotypes and complain that anything girly is Bad all in one breath. This is hypocritical and promotes gender-role stereotypes. G4 is a girl's show, more importantly it's a kid's show. Some adult fans forget that and get upset that it doesn't pander to them. It's not meant to, enjoy and accept for what it is. There is nothing wrong with a guy liking a girl's show, or an adult of either gender enjoying kids cartoons. I've had people pester me to give G4 a chance. I did, I watched some episodes and liked it, even though the art style is ugly and generic. I've even bought a few toys but gave them away. But many refuse to ever give the previous gens a chance and act as though they are the Grand Authority and that actual fans don't know jack. This is hypocritical and rude, but it has calmed down a lot. G1 is fine, it's not just nostalgia talking either. I've revisited some shows I watched as a kid and quickly turned them off. I still enjoy G1, my daughter and two of my little cousins like it too,my daughter in fact now has a nice collection of the original toys. They're beautiful and well made. I don't enjoy Tales anymore. G3 is...a bit bland and cutesy, but it's not half as bad as people say. The toys are gorgeous and it's what got me back into MLP. There's no excuse for Newborn Cuties though. I watched one episode and regretted it. Don't judge if you ain't watched it or seen any of the toys in person. Your opinion isn't valid. If you watched and liked or didn't like it, then that's a different story. Edited April 29, 2016 by Leave a Whisper
Kimi Vulpine 219 April 29, 2016 Share April 29, 2016 Kinda. Stuff like "Over Two Rainbows" is inexcusable, but some of G1 and yes, even G3 can be entertaining. GeekySonic 1,150 April 30, 2016 Share April 30, 2016 I don't think I am. On the contrary, a Brony that I met on Xbox Live recommended that I check out older gen stuff a couple months ago. Princess Promenade, Minty Christmas, a few others. They weren't that bad. I haven't watched the original 80's show in forever, but I remember being at least a little interested at one point as a kid. 1 Check out my voice-acting demo reels on Casting Call Club, if you'd like.
