Embarrassing/Funny/Awesome Moments When Buying MLP Merchandise

Being MLP is a show originally for little girls most merchandise is dominated by pink. However, in places like Hot Topic most pony merchandise is more universal and neutral in color for older audiences. But despite this its still perceived as a show for little girls by the majority of closed minded people.

I dont plan on buying pony merchandise any time soon. Mainly due to my parents finding out and being a closet brony. But even if I did buy merchandise, it would never be in person. Sometimes I will go to Hot Topic to get an idea of what I want to buy and if its sold online I would buy it that way. I would be embarrassed to go up to the register even at Hot Topic and buy MLP stuff.

To those who buy pony merchandise in person at a store such as Hot Topic or the Pink Aisle in most big box stores do you have any funny or embarrassing moments? Basically once you went up to the register to purchase your merchandise or just browsing the MLP part of the store anything.

To those who are closeted about being a brony, did you make up an excuse when asked why you bought MLP merchandise like "this is for my little sister/cousin"?

To those who were extremely embarrassed and were targeted by people in the store or just had an awkward moment, did that stop you from buying in person and switch to buying MLP stuff online only?

Finally, to those who had just funny moments why buying MLP merchandise, what exactly happened and did you meet any bronies in the process when browsing the aisle or making a purchase?

I go to Forbidden Planet to get my pony merchandise as the UK is bare of it. I go in get what I want and leave. Believe me know that no clerk cares about what you are buying as long as they can make a sale. They don't care if you are buying it for someone else, yourself or for an organization for as long as they earn some money by the end of the day than they care not for what you buy.

This is just here to tell you all that you need not worry about what they may think of you.

Long exposition time!
There was a plushie, at Cracker Barrel.  Pinkie Pie, pretty well made and show accurate, they didn't have any RD ones.  After a couple times of entering and eyeing the corner that it was in nonchalantly, one day I decided that I was going to buy it.  It was 15$ and I had prepared, except my excuse for buying it, I didn't plan that much through.  So I stealthily picked it up and made my way over to the counter.  The cashier there eyed me suspiciously, as I was holding a bright ball of pink in my hands lurking around.  When I made it over there she asked why I was trying to buy such a thing, no time for thinking I blurted out; It's a birthday present, for my 8-year old sister.  I tried to be as casual as one could be under the situation and stopped the blush that threatened to shade my face.  She asked some follow up questions, but I managed to keep up the charade.  I paid for it and asked for it to be bagged so that no one else could know the dark secret.  I  went back into the car where my parents were and we went home.  Now  I just have a Pinkie plushie on top of my upstairs TV.

TL;DR: I use online shopping now.

Heh.

I buy the brushables from time to time - I have to get my hands on whatever Rarity merch I see - and I always get these funny looks when buying the toys and whatnot, so I'm uncomfortable with it and a bit meek, but I'd never deny Rarity, so I always admit it's for me if asked.

Anyway, so I was buying an 8" Rainbow Power Rarity Brushable at Wal-Mart a couple of months back (before Rainbow Power even existed on the show :derp: Nice spoilers, Hasbro.) and one of those fancy little metallic dog tags with Rares on it - I had enough money to get both of them, but Texas has a HUGE sales tax, and that made it cost more than I had on me.

So I bought the dog tag and told the lady to put the brushable back - I circled back around to the pink aisle and picked up a different version of the exact same Rarity brushable and checked out at a different register, giving me just enough money to pick up both items on separate purchases and avoid the extra sales tax :D

Yeahh. I beat the system.

I would just tell them it's for me cause bunny don't care. I guess since I'm a retailer I don't have to worry I could just order something for myself with my regular orders.

I recently bought a Funrise Derpy plush at Wal-Mart and said it was for my (nonexistent) sister.

Me too!  I don't even have siblings  :muffins:

I guess I'm lucky, unless I am buying something on the expensive side.  Since I am in EMS, I just wait till I am at work run into the store in uniform and just tell the clerk that I am buying it to keep on the ambulance incase I transport a scared kid...

Well well well, I went to get some MLP:FiM merchandise the other day, and since nobody really knows my Brony identity it was a very awkward moment for me. The scenario went something like this:

*Walks casually to the counter*

*Gets stared at by a man and his daughter on the way*

Me: "Just this thanks, a nice day today isn't it?"

Cashier: " So... You like My Little Pony?"

I am just thinking Oh great, how am I going to get out of this one... How did they just assume I was a fan and not getting it for someone else? Looks like I was found out. No use denying it, I'm never gonna see this person again anyway.

Me: "Yeah, it's alright"

Cashier "Hmmm...."

Me: *clears throat*

Cashier: "I guess it's a decent show then"

Me: "It's an awesome show"

Cashier: "..."

Me: "Ehehe.... well okay, see you later then."

*stashes MLP merchandise away*

*gets more weird looks as I walk out*

I then quickly escaped one of the most awkward situations in the history of mankind.

The people's faces looked a bit like this too:

:eww:

Edit: I also spent at least 10 minutes deciding whether or not I should buy the merchandise, I didn't really want to be seen in the MLP and girls toys Isle...

Yep thats kind of what I picture happening if I bought pony merchandise in any story. Super Awkwardness with people looking at me.

Even in Hot Topic being more "friendly" to bronies I have a feeling the cashier (most being hipster/rocker/emo like in their late teens or 20's at least in my local store) would look at me weird unless they were bronies themselves or had no issues with bronies.

When you have as much swag as me, you don't get embarrassed.

But seriously, I've only ever bought one package from Walmart before from the pink aisle, and it wasn't so bad. I was with a friend, and it was very early on in my Bronyhood, so to speak, so it was a little embarrassing.

I get most of my pony stuff either online or through Hot Topic. It was a little embarrassing at first going into Hot Topic to buy it, but eventually I made friends with most of the staff and they're cool with it and they'll talk about the show with me and why I like it.

So basically I overcame most of the embarrassment phase. I'm a grown ass man, if I can't take liking ponies, then I shouldn't like them at all, ya feelz me?

Y'all's stories are still good though and I wish all of you luck in overcoming the more embarrassing moments of liking the show and wanting merchandise.

When I bought my Nightmare Moon at ToysRUs, the staff all stopped to stare at me. They didn't say anything and when they didn't have to be interacting with the cash they would take a full stride back away from me.

I wasn't beastly, or unshaven. I was clean, in clean proper fitting clothes...but they literally all stared at me until I was out the store and away from the view of their windows.

I paid debit so she didn't have to get near me, I wish I had the cash though so I could force her to be near me.

I don't get it. I walked in, walked to the section checked out the Shadowbolt Dash, picked up the Nightmare Moon and headed to the cash. Didn't say boo to anyone.

I technically didn't BUY this, but..

I was looking at the DVD section where MLP DVDs were being sold, just when a boy and his mother came up to me while I was looking. I just looked at him and ran away.

I can relate, I've been staring at MLP:FiM DVDs before and got a "Um.... Sir... Can I.. Help.. you?"

Sadly we don't have Hot Topic in the UK so our choice of merchandise is very small. And very pink.

The trick is to mix it with lots of other stuff you may or may not intend to buy, because if you go up to the checkout with just a bunch of pink pony stuff, you're gonna have a bad time.

I suppose it's less awkward for me, since I'm not an adult yet and with me being a girl, but people will still not hesitate to question me about it. So that's why I stick to shopping online.

I was in Wal-Mart helping my mom buy stuff. When we were checking our stuff out I decided to wander off until I saw a My Little Pony dog tag. I saw a Fluttershy one and I got it.  :yay: But by the time I got back my mom was already paying so I rushed over to her and I asked her to buy it for me. The clerk was giving me a strange look and I kind of barged in on her when she was handing him the money. I got it but my face was so red! XD

Eeyup; No reason to be embarrassed about it... As a grown woman I'll even get ask "how old my daughter is" but I don't take the free excuse... "Oh, no this is for me!" I say with a great big smile... Typically the cashiers laugh (especially the females) and say something like "I guess it's good to stay young at heart."

Well, in Thailand they just started having DVDs for sales at 7-11 and I thought it might be a good Idea to buy it. So, I went to the closest 7-11 and began picking up all the DVDs and suddenly, a girl, who came with her mother, was pointing at my hands (full of ponies DVDs) and shouting, "Mom, looks at this guy. He was buying a girl cartoon." And then everyone was looking at me like I was some kind of criminal. I was a bit embarrassing at that moment, but my ego didn't stop me. I walked up to the cashier (Who was a very cute girl) with my head held high and I told her, "Is there anymore of these? I think the 3 volume is missing." She looked stunned then she was giggling and she went into the storage room and brought out the one I asked for. Then I leave the place like a man.

I rarely leave my home and can't be the one to pay for things when I'm physically in a store, but it felt a bit strange writing a fair but firm e-mail to Amazon when I was mistakenly sent the wrong product.  "Though I ordered the Rainbow Dash / Rarity MLP CCG theme deck, I received instead the Twilight Sparkle / Apple Jack theme deck."  And so on lol.

And though I wasn't there for this event, I asked someone to pick me up a Rainbow Dash figure from a local store.  Upon their return, they explained that our neighbor, an employee, and a manager all got involved lol.  It was very important to the manager that I have that little Dashie figure, and she went to some trouble to eventually get one to me.  xD  Afterwards, my neighbor asked to see mah pony, so I brought Dashie out for a bit.

I purchased a vynal scratch from hot topic about 2 weeks ago. Nowbim a fairly built individual and Its clear I take care of myself (not gloating just something to make the story make sense) So I bring it up to the counter and the gorgeous young woman at the counter eyes me kind of weirdly and asks if it's for me. With out even thinking I said yes and so is this comic and I grabbed one of the idw comics and slapped that down to. She laughed and told me I didn't look like a brony in which I replied that's funny you didn't look like a woman who would give your number to a brony, so looks like we were both deceived. To which I slid her a pen and a piece of receipt paper and we went to see Godzilla last weekend. Made my week so much better cuz it was a bad week. Sorry my story wasn't really embarrassing or funny just a proud moment for myself :P
